Article: Korea ranks the 30th best country to be a mother in

Source: Yonhap News via Naver

Out of 178 countries, Korea ranked in at 30th, one rank higher than last year (31st), on NGO's Save the Children list.

Top Ten.

1. Finland
2. Norway
3. Sweden
4. Iceland
5. The Netherlands
6. Denmark
7. Spain
8. Germany
9. Australia and Belgium in joint place

1. [+4,862, -225] It's difficult to raise the children we already have, don't expect childbirth encouragement........

2. [+3,662, -319] Just how bad do the other countries below us have it if we're ranked 30th ㅋㅋ; Or maybe we just feel we have it the worst because we've only lived in our country... just like how soldiers think their unit served the hardest.

3. [+912, -46] The irony considering our country is #1 in offspring who commit suicide.

4. [+645, -37] I don't think Korea's a country for kids to enjoy living in... Is a life spent in after school academies all throughout school a good life..?

5. [+626, -141] 30 is way too high, no? Until the older generation who treats wives and daughter in laws like slaves disappear, I believe Korea ranks somewhere at 100.

6. [+460, -28] 30th best country to be a mother in but somehow we have less and less mothers every year.

7. [+427, -81] I expected Korea to place 300th.

8. [+251, -15] And yet Korea ranks lowest in birth rates...

lol @ my country being #7. Raising a kid is expensive as hell and the country is still going through a financial crisis with lots of people unemployed.

I was going to comment that I was surprised it was so high. We don't have it bad compared to other countries, but nowadays the idea of raising a kid here...? Pft.

slightly off topic but i always found it hilariously enraging that politicians blame women for low birthrates. like im sorry for not wanting to put my uterus up for business when things are so shitty for women to be mothers.

I remember a politician who said they were encouraging people to work less, like the french way. I understand that for men who have an appartment near their workplace or sleep at a hotel, working less would help to see their wife more often. but it's not because french people work less that they have more children. it's thanks to the social services and the view of the society. there are less housewives and women don't feel the need to give up their job. but it's not paradise neither like men don't do a lot of housework therefore women have 2 jobs in fact: at work and at home.

denmark at a 6th place seems pretty accurate with everything considered.

their comments though, what did they take into account when making this list? seems like the koreans do not agree at all, so what did they take into account ? does anybody know?

At the source it's listed: maternal death risk, under age of 5 death, years formal schooling, gross income, women participation in govt -- but personally, I would exchange some of those categories to more 'mother' related ones

Me neither tbh. North European countries always rank so high in everything. They usually rank super high in education systems too.

The criteria used are quite weak imo... What about paid maternity, childcare subsidies, legal position of single mothers (or women in general), subsidies to single mothers, etc... ?

I'm amused at the self-awareness in the Netizen comments, and I'm curious as to how one even measures the best country to be a mother in. Is it the birth rate, the length of time a child devotes to their mother, the child survival rate, the benefits given to mothers by the country? What? They gave no info with that.

Edit: Nvm I saw what they used to grade this, and honestly that looks like BS. As I originally thought, you can't quantify this. The poll is flawed, and so, none of these ranking really matter to me anymore.

30 isn't too bad. It's higher than I'd expected, anyway; recently I read an article about how hard it is to be a single mum in Korea (there still being a huge stigma) and also how it's very hard to juggle children and career. But they have still better regulations than most other countries, then.

North-western Europe and esp. Scandinavia forever ranking highest in these kind of lists. I don't have experience with being a mum, but looking at the women around me I'm not surprised we rank top five. There seem to be pretty good regulations re: maternity leave, combining work and family, etc. Although of course it's never perfect and there will always still be a struggle.

seriously how do you define the best for a mother? considering that not everybody sees mothers the same way...
anyway, yeah for Europe!!

So we're number 8...

I kinda get it, you (can) get lot of benefits here if you're a mother but I think this stems from the fact that fewer women want to actually have kids. Politicians are becoming a bit desperate and want to make "motherhood" attractive again. Not sure if they're succeeding or failing, probably the latter... None of my friends have children yet (or any plans for them), whereas my mother already had a 4 year old brat (me ;D) when she was my age.

lol it's weird because I went to Germany a couple months ago and I was surprised at many young (like mid and late 20s) couples with kids, but it could be a coincidence idk.

I don't believe this list, Korea US and Japan are about the same? I thought Japan was super weak in terms of it's feminism

Japan is weak when it comes to women's rights but they have a high degree of economic freedom. Don't rely on this list to much, many of their definitions are outdated or way to broad. They should have also taken to account that the difference between let's say number 28 and 31 might be really big even if they are not that far apart on the chart..
