Hotteok, usually defined as sweet korean pancakes, are one of the most popular street snacks in Korea, especially during winter.
It’s very tasty and very easy to make.

WHAT DO WE NEED:
Dough:

  • 250 gr Flour

  • 50gr sugar

  • 175 ml Water/milk/soy milk

  • 1 pack of yeast

Filling:

  • 2 tbs Brown sugar

  • 1 tbs Cinnamon powder

  • 2 tbs chopped walnuts

  • Honey: 1 tbs (optional)

Cooking oil

I’ve also made some using red paste bean (from the previous post) and a sweet potato filling; but the “traditional” filling is my favorite.

HOW TO :

Dough:
Pour the water into a bowl. Add the sugar and yeast, stir well.
Add the flour and mix it with a spatula, or by hand. (Spatula is the way to go if you don’t want it to be too messy).
Let the dough rise (at least 1 hour).

Filling:
Pretty simple, mix all the ingredients together.
See, it was easy

Shape and cook your Hotteok:
Divide dough into desired number of Hotteoks, a ball shape would be the best. The dough will be a little sticky, so you might need some flour.
Flatten the dough ball, put some filling in the center, and then seal it.
Heat up the pan over medium heat, add oil.
Place your hotteok on the pan (sealed side down) and let it cook for 30 seconds.Turn it over and press the dough with a spatula.
Cook 3 minutes on each side.

EAT.

It tastes the best right away. I kept some for today’s breakfast and although they were still tasty, the texture wasn't as good.

Feel free to post some of your recipe :3

though I'm probably not going to be able to make this anytime soon, thank you! It gives me an idea on the difficulty level scale for cooking.

these taste great filled with cheese (cheddar or mozzarella are the best for this) or red bean paste.

man they look so delicious :Q________
i really wanna try these but i dont have yeast and im too lazy to go to the supermarket. can i also make them without yeast? i usually dont use yeast when i make pancakes.
and can i use white sugar instead of brown sugar?

OT but i always wondered how hygienic those street food stalls in korea are..?

From: [identity profile] dreamerbri.livejournal.com
they're more like flat filled buns rather than pancakes so you need the yeast. white sugar should work.

my mother used to make these for my siblings and i when we were younger, and the amount of burnt tongues received from biting into molten brown sugar were a strong lesson in patience LMFAO.

wait for these little bastards to cool. > ___ >

Sweet potato filling? Mmmmm, I love sweet potatoes!

Love, love, love this post ♥ Thank you so much! The picture is gorgeous, it makes me want to sit down and have a snack, but I shouldn't because I'm escaping from finishing a paper as it is *cries*.

I thought I was going to have time over Spring Break to do some adventurous cooking but all I ended up doing was...more coursework >.< Please keep inspiring me, I have a month between spring and summer classes so I will just spend a couple of days making all these yummies. These will definitely be at the top of my list. I'm there if it's pancakey and sweet ♥
