SNSD Talks About Being Victims of the Black Ocean

Girls’ Generation (SNSD) talked about the times when the group fell victim to the Black Ocean.

During March 17’s broadcast of SBS’s Healing Camp, the SNSD members guested on the show to share ‘SNSD’s Five Daebak Incidents.’

Explaining one of the five incidents, Yoona said, “At the time when we were promoting the first album Into the New World in 2007, we performed in Dream Concert, and faced ten minutes of boycott. We started performing in front of the dark audience without any lights or sound, as if no one was there.”

“When we went up to the stage, everyone had turned off their light sticks. We could only see the pink sticks from our fans,” reminisced the SNSD member.



Taeyeon also shared, “When we performed for SM Town concert in China, we saw some fans making the ‘X’ with their red light sticks,” to which Yoona added, “I thought they were making hearts at first, so I started performing harder,” bringing out laughter.


MC Yuri, who was a member of a first generation girl idol group, FIN.K.L, also shared her painful memories of the Black Ocean, saying, “The fans actually turned around in their seats. I had to perform by looking at their backs. But now I can understand why they did that. The female fans just really liked their male stars.”

Sung yuri said that a fan confessed/apologized to her now that they're older. it was because they (fans) waited so many hours to see their oppas but then finkl could just greet them backstage. They felt jealous. As if that's a legit reason to be doing that to a performer.

Not really. Black ocean part was a quick topic. A bunch of time was spent talking about sooyoung and yoona's dating but it was just basically a nondenial round about conversation that talks mostly about how they felt towards the members and the situation rather than the actual relationship. You can tell they were more willing to talk here than RS. But that's maybe because of the show's format, the MCs, and that yoona and sooyoung were there to talk about their own feelings. The real emotion part was sooyoung's dad's letter.

This is my thought exactly. I don't like when people say "no one deserves that" because I can think of some acts which I would absolutely not stand up at a concert and cheer for. Like if some artist was a white nationalist or Holocaust denier, I'm just supposed to stand up and wave a lightstick around because "no one deserves that?"

But nothing SNSD has done even comes close to that level, even though there are things I don't like about half the members, so I don't think their black ocean was justified.

Shin Haechul's radio broadcast about the black ocean is the best thing ever. I have it saved in case I need a good laugh now and then, because some of his quotes are gold.

"There is this concert called "Dream Concert" or whatever. It's free admission... like the audience is poor or something. They lure couple thousand teenagers for free and then perform. Anyways, this retarded "Dream Concert" or whatever... I don't want to admit that I performed there once... Anyways, these people turned off their glow sticks when this particular idol group came out to perform. That's more than just not cooperating but putting down the artists. It can be considered as entertainment-business-bullying. It was a shameful act. Yes, you can also interpret it as a protest to the management or whatever. But what kind of fans would do such effed up things like that? In ANY country, it's basic etiquette and manner to applaud and cheer for any type of artists or entertainers. If you don't like them, then just stay still. There is no need for you to spit and throw rocks at them (booing, unnecessary acts). It seems like SNSD was the victim of their bullying this year. I am outraged and very pissed off. Dirty fans create dirty performances and dirty performances create dirty cultures. Idol stars are not to be blamed for this. Their (the fans) acts show nothing but how dirty and disgusting they are. All they are doing is to show off that "we have THIS much power". They gained some "pride" now but their sad acts or the 3rd class fans that participated are insignificant for the music industry. It's not going to improve nor harm the progress and advancement of music. They are just 3rd class fans who have no life. I hope SNSD was not hurt by them. I will play nothing but SNSD songs until the end of today's broadcast. SNSD's Baby Baby, Kissing You, ITNW, Wish, Small Boat, Love Melody... If we still have more time, I will keep playing SNSD songs. Me too. It's kinda of sad that until now a big part of the fandoms still claimed it's unplanned and unorganized when even a casual i-fans, like me, now about it beforehand. I also remember there were articles about police releasing statements about how none of the violent acts happened and then the fangirl claiming to be beaten by a fanboy admitted that she's lying. SNSD antis never get it right because they criticize the group about wrong, inconsequential things. "Their shorts are too short!" "She made a weird face!" I mean, really?

There are legitimate reasons to generally dislike/ignore SNSD completely and I don't judge people who do, but the ones who intensely hate them do it over the most trivial reasons.

I went to that dream concert, and it was really sad irl. I remember my roommate and I went, we wanted to sit with Cassiopeia but we couldn't sit there because we didn't had a fanclub ID, so we sat in the front with all the foreigners and a couple of suju/tvxq fansite masters from overseas, and when the black ocean thing happened it was CRAZY, because the whole front area was like 'huu whats going on???' and the staff was freaking out. My friend and I we though the whole black ocean thing was not going to happen and when it actually happened it was so horrible, I felt so bad for the girls (but tbh we didn't notice until the end of their second song, we were too busy singing Into the New World and doing that high kick lmao)

DBSK boys were really upset and Yoochun and Changmin scold the fans real hardcore, even Yunho was really angry too. A couple weeks later there was a fanmeet (i don't remember why tho), and Yoochun and Changmin really went off about the whole black ocean thing and they were literally scolding the fans and Yoochun even said 'if you guys are going to act like that don't be our fans because these are our friends and juniors, we have to take care of them and they respect us' or something along those lines. It was really embarrassing and it was the first time I 'received' a scolding from them even though I didn't do anything, lol awkward.

Also I remember that year was when there were rumors about Jessica and Donghae dating and everyone knew Junsu and Taeyeon were an item, so it was extra awkward and also the crazy suju/tvxq stans were extra crazy because of that. I felt so bad for these girls, they were really scared of suju/tvxq fans, like they would walk into SME and the suju/tvxq fans would literally make gagging sounds or spit at the floor when they were walking pass them.
