HONG KONG – South Korean broadcaster SBS has cancelled its dating reality show “Jjak” after a female contestant last week committed suicide.

The 29 year old woman, identified only by her surname Chun, apparently told family that she felt misrepresented by the “Big Brother”-style show in which contestants are put through various different exercises in order to find a mate.

Chun is understood to have killed herself some time on Wednesday on the island of Jeju where the show was filming. Media reports say she hanged herself. Police say that she left a suicide note.

SBS announced the show’s cancellation this weekend, but declined any direct responsibility for Chun’s death.

South Korea has a sad track record of cyber-bullying and high-profile suicides as well as one of the world’s highest rates of suicides.

Oh yikes. This is awful. Didn't something like this happen in the U.S. too a couple of years back? But I don't remember if they cancelled the show or not.

I think there's been a few incidents like this. I was thinking of American Idol where one of the contestants who got ridiculed or something in the early stages of the show ended up committing suicide. At least that's what I remember reading, I could be wrong.

Dated news is dated news. My local papers actually reported this days ago. Wow.

yeah they talked about it last week in my country too and I was wondering if someone would post about it on omona. apparently she didn't like the image they gave of her, she thought she looked ridiculous. here it seems that it's the aim for the people who go to these shows. they should have medical help when they leave the show and face the "real world".

There was a post here on omona shortly after it happened that you probably didn't see. But then the official decision to not air the show was just made in the last two days or so and this is just a follow up on the incident.

I think you have to understand that no matter what kind of reality show you sign up for they will always make you look bad at some point. But I watch reality TV like every day so...

This is sad, RIP
