The Philippines Love KPOP

Jessica Soho recently released a documentary in the Philippines about the KPOP craze that's currently brewing over there. For years, Korean dramas and movies have been very popular in The Philippines, but it's only recently that KPOP has been blowing up into the mainstream.

The first part of Soho's documentary features Sandara Park and her rise to fame. The much noted story about her less than stellar career in Korea, before becoming famous in The Philippines, and then her back in her own native Korea as a member of 2NE1. The first part also features The Wonder Girls and their hit song "Nobody."

The second part shows a crazed TVXQ / DBSK fan (Cassiopeia)... but not all is rosy in this documentary, as a Filipino by the name of Ramon del Rosario is angry that KPOP is somewhat taking away attention from Filipino artists. Overall, it was pretty entertaining to watch.

What do you mean by 'KPOP is scattered everywhere in the Philippines without it being understood properly'? Do you mean that people don't understand Korean culture/language, or did you mean something else? Just curious. xD

One of the girls that lived on my floor freshman year was Filipino and she had an incredible amount of Korean stuff. It was awesome 'cause she was the only person at college who ~understood~ me when it came to K-pop and K-dramas lol. That being said, Filipino people are awesome. The hate is unnecessary :(

Also, I like Dara now. I still think her singing/dancing ability is barely average but after watching 2NE1 TV and seeing what a complete nut she is, I've come to like her personality ^_^

i intern for an independent label in new york and i've noticed that there are HELLA filips in the fashion industry!! also i accidentally called alexander wang filippino the other day and embarrassed myself :c :c :c idk why, WANG is obviously not the most pinoy name ever...but he just looks filip to me idk idk :c

tbh, watching the hallyu in the philippines from here in the states amuses me to no end. the only filipino musical talents i ever liked were jolina, rivermaya, and MYMP; looking back on it now, those phases were brief but sweet for me. as far as local talents, i can see that talent is brimming in the philippines, but i can't help but feel like things that are popular are second-rate there.

i take more pride in knowing there's something that fills the crave i have for catchy music that just happens to be an asian source that i can't get here in the states.

i'd love to have a filipino be huge across multiple countries, and right now my hopes kinda ride on charice pempengco.

and the novelty songs. have. to. stop. bawwww :|

well if they produced music not just to appeal to those who actually buy the stuff then possibly the popularity of it would increase~
and maybe just maybe more people will listen to it..

plus they still seem to be under the idea that emo-music is the only thing that will sell. ==;;

novelty songs only sell to the older people who want to feel young..
and to the little kids who dance to whatever their parents tell them to~

ugh. if kpop will really hit it here i highly doubt a lot will buy the original stuffs anyway.. *sigh*

i'm leaning on NO to kpop here since well i see this like F4 and Fahrenheit fandoms here as just a passing phase to a nice majority here~

You know, I hope I don't sound elitist to most people here, but seriously? I feel insulted every time someone who used to laugh at me for dying my hair and wearing kfashion have Nobody stuck in their heads and they would hum it randomly. Like, wtf. I try my best and put out facts about WG and stuff--but they kind of just laugh at me knowing so much about it too. -___-

I am insulted at the fact that Kpop is just NOVELTY to most Filipinos--especially the way mass media is force feeding them on everyone. I SINCERELY LIKE THIS SHIT SO PLEASE...IDEK. :(

when i was still in college, the school around my college is full of Koreans.
