Sunmi Explains Why She Goes Barefoot Without Heels.

Sunmi is proving to be one of the hottest female soloist of K-Pop at the moment, taking the music scene by storm with consecutive hit singles, “24 Hours” and now “Full Moon.” One of Sunmi’s key style points was her barefoot concept and she recently shared her reasons behind it through an interview with Star News.

“If I came out with high heels and a typical concept, I don’t think my own color would have been formed. I’ve always had bad ankles so I can’t wear heels for a long time anyway so being barefoot was actually more comfortable when dancing,” she said.

Sunmi continued, “The concept for ‘Full Moon’ actually had me wearing heels in the beginning. But when I stepped on stage with the heels, it wasn’t the image and my company and I were thinking of. I wanted to give off a girlish but womanly vibe but wearing heels seemed too strong.”

Sunmi’s “sofa dance” for her “Full Moon” choreography also worked out better barefoot. “When I stepped on the sofa with heels on, the sofa kept ripping. I couldn’t catch my balance either. It was dangerous on many levels to do the choreography with heels so I decided to go barefoot again,” she explained.

About her new “Full Moon” concept, Sunmi stated, “I tried to appeal with a more refined and mysterious concept than ’24 Hours.’ I wanted to show the youthful but sexy side of someone who is in between a girl and a woman.”

When asked if she will continue her barefoot concept for her future singles, Sunmi laughed and said, “The barefoot concept is like a watercolor paint that gave me a color as a solo artist. But I probably won’t be barefoot for all my future activities. I need to keep showing new changes.”

I've been watching some of her performances on Youtube. She's a beautiful performer, not as glitzy as other solos, but I do like the quiet elegance in the way she moves on stage. I do want her to work on her facial expressions though. It looks like her face is forever frozen in one expression.

Dancing barefoot was never an odd thing for me as an Indian. Any indian program I've been to, they are almost always dancing barefoot.

feet in general are gross though and I'd rather not see them but thats a whole other story

It's the concepts. She used to have a wide range of stage expressions in WG. After Full Moon I'd actually would like her to do a cutesy concept (maybe for summer??). Her emotions will return then. lol.

Eye-siding the last line, but apart that, I don't mind her being barefoot. It did set her apart from others. I just hope she won't do it all the times (there are a lot of shoes without heels lol) but it worked well with both 24 Hours and Full Moon

I used to do khattak when I was younger and I found dancing barefoot a lot easier. To me, having someone roll around on stage in shorts is grosser then just bare feet on a stage because then the dirt is getting all over your legs not just on the soles of your feet.

Rather than it be gross that she's basically walking everywhere barefoot, I'm curious why they didn't try something on the lines of jazz shoes. (Either toe shoes or actual jazz shoes).

Even if they tried to use toe shoes it would give her better traction and probably be less painful than actually being barefoot. And it's not as visible? It would give her a more performance element I think.

The stages are sometimes really slick (which is why so many people face plant on a regular basis) but if she's going on stage after a group like Bangtan or Exo (where you have a million members and intense choreography with sneakers), you lose the smoothness and gain traction and that's just painful on bare feet.

I think it's really awesome the way they've translated this article. I like the way she describes performing barefoot and I think that's incredibly smart on JYP's behalf (which is a strange thing to say) that this ended up being her thing.

I also have weak ankles and foot problems so I can't wear heels, so props to her. But for me going barefoot can be just as painful.

She should wear some supportive shoes instead for real.

Aesthetically wise though, its hard to find attractive ladylike shoes that are supportive/good for feet. Its frustrating.

Nakashima Mika freaked everyone out by singing barefoot on tv. But, then she doesn't really dance much.
Heels on a sofa would be ridiculous~ Hope the next concept is good whatever the footwear.
