Henry Brings Laughter to His First Experience of the Korean Military in "Real Man"

Super Junior-M’s Henry had his first experience as a soldier in the Korean military, and it was quite hilarious to watch. On February 16, Henry joined the cast of MBC’s “Real Men,” along with singer K.Will, and actors Chun Jung Myung and Park Gun Hyung. However, unlike the typical soldier, Henry showed his goofy side from the very beginning. From the start, the Super Junior-M member entered the military training site with a huge suitcase, seeming as if he was ready to go on a camping trip. When the singer responded with unexpected answers during the physical examination process, the army doctor expressed, “I felt like he was an elementary school student who was 5-7years old.”

Yet that wasn’t all because when it came time to evaluate the new soldiers’ personal belongings, it was noted that Henry brought along his laptop, height elevating shoe pads, a personal pillow, and his sunglasses, surprising the drill instructors. Although the singer’s first experience wasn’t perfect, many viewers kept in mind that Henry was a foreigner who was raised in Canada, making the singer’s cluelessness understandable and hilarious.

Henry, K.Will, Chun Jung Myung, and Park Gun Hyung are all new members of “Real Men,” replacing previous members Jang Hyuk, Ryu Soo Young, and Son Jin Young. The four new members will continue with the remaining members, Kim Soo Ro, Sam Hemington, and Park Hyung Sik.

Good luck Henry; we hope you can adapt quickly and enjoy your military experience.

Super Junior, leader of Hallyu, will be giving a special lecture at the National Assembly of Korea.

According to an announcement made by the Secretariat of the National Assembly on February 17, the male group members will participate in the sixth part of “The National Assembly Top Class Culture and Arts Course” as guest lecturers. The event will be held on February 20 at 7.30pm, and the audience will be consist of members of the National Assembly.

The members selected to represent the group and SM Entertainment are Shindong, Eunhyuk, and Sungmin. Titled “The world is influenced by K-Pop,” the three talented speakers will be lecturing on entering the global market and maintaining the state in the future for one and half hours.

A representative of Super Junior commented, “As Koreans engaged in the mainstream culture business, they will share their personal feelings and experiences.”

Jung Jin Suk, the Secretary-General of the National Assembly, revealed, “It will be a good opportunity for us in the National Assembly to communicate with young artists, who are the forerunners of spreading awareness of Korea around the world, and work together in a passionate manner to develop future vision.”

Since debuting in 2005, Super Junior has been known as a well-rounded male group with multitalented members. They are one of the most popular idol groups outside Korea, and some of their hit songs include “U,” “Sorry Sorry,” “Mr. Simple,” and “Sexy, Free and Single.”

Anything about Sungmin's enlistment? Apparently his name was on the official register and people are saying he's going to be in a police unit (that apparently also performs for the young/disabled/elderly in order to make the police seem...friendly and approachable idk). He's supposedly set to go sometime between May-August.

That's cute about Donghae though, and I need to watch Real Men - if only MBC would upload more than just small cuts, and if only they could sub them...

I'm trying not to get angry about it now because it isn't confirmed but if he isn't in 7jib promotions I'll be so mad.
Ugh just thinking about it pisses me off, wait 2 years for Leeteuk, because god forbid they promote without him, and then they make it so there's a minimum 4 year gap until Sungmin can participate in an album again.
Such bullshit.

i do hope he gets to record 7jib and the mv before enlisting. leeteuk's absence didnt rly matter during ss5 but sungmin being absent when he's one of the main vocals. that is unacceptable /bias

SM said that time-frame would only happen if everything past the initial stage (which he passed) would work without any problems. My fingers are crossed that something goes wrong and it gets postponed, seriously.

Is it confirmed he won't be participating?? If yes that is really unfair what the heck D:< What is the point of releasing an album wherein the more pivotal members won't be included. :/// Eeteuk is not much of a loss, Yesung could have recorded his parts prior to the album release and the rest of KR + S could handle his lines just fine, why didn't they release an album then? An album is all about the music + performances, as much as I love Eeteuk the group can release albums just fine without him. I'm not saying he's not important, but it's...manageable. :///

it's not yet confirmed if he wont be participating or joining this department. and i fucking hope no for both.
yeah!!! they could have released an album when they have 3 main vocals (KRS). it will be so stupid to wait for leeteuk while sungmin wont participate leaving only kyu and wook. lbr leeteuk's vocals is not needed ugggghhh

I'm pretty sure it's been thought that ShinMin will enlist together for a while, yeah. Apparently SM said something about how Sungmin just passed the screening or something, and that time-frame (May-August) is only if everything else about getting into that division goes by without problems. I'm remote-begging him to not be perfect for once so it won't go flawlessly and it'll be pushed back some. I was talking somewhere with someone about how an SJ album would apparently sound weird w/o Yesung, but I pointed out that KyuWook can certainly cover it, not to mention Sungmin in the least. I'd love if they gave Sungmin Yesung's lines, actually...

Someone else online said that they wanted Kibum of all people to come back, and I said that I'd laugh until I cried (and then probably just cry) if ShinMin were replaced for 7jib by TeukBum.

Henry gets more love!! yipee. i was reading the netizenbuzz translated korean comments, and they were all good. also they were laughing at SJ trolling him/Kangin giving him the wrong advice.

i wonder if Henry does well on this show, if SJM will do a Korean comeback as well...their reception to the korean public wasn't too bad.

awww fandoms collide. but snickering at Jeff's last tweet...he totally got that name twitter name wrong. but Its You is an awesome song.

i remember the positive comments from the korean public, even wondering why SJ didn't have songs like "Go."
i still am dumbfounded they are waiting for Teuk to come back before they release the 7th jib.
how is Zhoumi doing? the reaction to his SM Ballad song?
are you getting more excited about your adventures? when Henry comes back, hopefully you can go in and try to make a show.

Omg henry is so hilarious in real men. He's like the perfect combination of hyungsik and sam hammington. Both good points and bad points. He young and clueless like hyungsik, but isnt afraid to ask questions when he doesnt understand something like sam hammington. Perfect hybrid is perfect. And i died laughing because kwill and his new appa gunhyung got so much 2nd hand embarassment from all the styff henry does and boy does he have no clue!!! "Omg! I want to buy a sniper! But that seems expensive and i dont have a lot of money" and the physicians and other soldiers cant even say anything because they're so taken aback by henry's behavior.

Nope. I watched the video raw. Real men is usually hard for me to understand but henry isnt exactly the most fluent korean speaker so he uses very conversational simple korean which i can understand. Im guessing i'l have to rely on subs once they do drills and more military jargon is used.

Im hoping sj subbers will pick it up. Because not even hyungsik/mir/insane popularity of this show managed to get it subbed.

I see people stating this hope but I really doubt it. With Real Men included Suju members appear on like 6 TV shows a week. None of them get regularly subbed by sj subbers, just some highlight clips, live tweets and gifs. And I can see why. The volume is just too much.

I guess it would be different if it was a Suju-centric show.

Note that there are two first episodes. This one is like a pilot ep, but you can find the real episode 1 and the episodes up to number 6 on the same channel. There's 10 episodes though, so I don't know where to find the rest of them subbed.

I want to watch Real Men. It's been getting rave reviews for a long time now, and with Henry joining there's only more incentive.

I'm glad that Henry's doing well on variety. But I still can't help shake the anxious feeling that something's going to go horribly wrong. I don't know why I feel this, I don't get the same with the other members even if they have a record of... let's say making mistakes. It's just that Henry seems so clueless, like he has no sense at all. But he's so genuine about everything that he gets away with it.

Anyway, wishing him lots of luck. Despite everything I'm glad SM got him this gig. I think it shows that they actually have confidence in him and his career in Korea.

Also, this talk at the Assembly reminds me, did Oxford ever release any video from the talk they had there? I was really hoping they would since the fancams barely caught any audio at all.

Im worried he'll say something insensitive or stupid but in the event that he does, he'll probably get a pass for being a foreigner. Like i think if i korean or a gyopo did what henry did in real man, it'll be taken as "ignorant" and "not caring about the importance of the korean army". sure hyungsik was "clueless" coming into the show but it was a different kind of clueless to henry's brand of "clueless". Hyungsik was like a deer in the headlights, wide eyed and just spaced out but kept quiet. Henry was like the overzealous kid excited for the first day of school and was just really hyper and loud and giddy. While those arent by any means, bad qualities, i think that it can very easily be interpreted as disrespectful and complete disregard of army ethics or practice or whatever.

Henry was hilarious and adorable on Real Men and he's getting a fantastic response from viewers. SM has stated in an interview that he's taken aback and flustered by the explosive reaction. With his Trap promotions last year and his foray into variety programs, I really hope SM will finally start to full out promote him in Korea. He has all the elements to be a success, if given a proper push he could do really well as a soloist.

does Korea really think kpop is that famous? I mean, snsd won the youtube awards but nobody knows them. the only one I can talked about with other people is PSY... what will they say? just that they did a concert and how they are loved by their fans? kpop may have made a lot of us interested in Korean culture but I don't like the tourism office's strategy. cuisine, dance and technology would be better to put in front. but it's just my opinion...

I'm from a country which promotes culture a lot and always argue that there should be an exception for cultural goods, that it's not like every business, (because we can't say we are good at business anyway haha) so I agree with you about giving money to culture. but I don't think it's a good idea to focus on kpop. moreover I am wondering what suju will say. it's usual for members of Parliament to hear experts and people who have a special experience but it seems like they just gonna say "ah we are a powerful country blablabla..."

Date: 2014-02-18 10:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] yukahoo.livejournal.com
Well, it does all depend on what they were invited there to talk about. If it's supposed to be an actual expert lecture or just a patriotic pr stunt.

I have no doubt that the Suju members, ten year veterans of the kpop industry and front-row witnesses to the latest hallyu boom, would have a lot to say about what they've seen and experienced, and how they see it play out in the future.

It's just that, is anyone actually willing to listen?

It's so interesting to see Henry in Korea and Henry in North America - It's like watching two different people. I think despite being in Korea for a while he still somewhat feels like a fish out of water and instead of hiding it and trying to act cool he just kind of goes with it.
