"With EXO in the lead, we will focus on bringing a K-POP breeze into the Chinese market" SM representative, Kim Young Min reveals his business plans for SM Entertainment in 2014.
It has been expected that this year, the sales for concerts and events by SM artists would rise approximately 50%.
"This year, we are expecting to have approximately 50% rise in the sales of concerts and events in the Chinese market. With EXO on the lead, we are planning on increasing concert and event activities for artists such as f(x), BoA, and KANGTA.
We are planning to change the pin point of our activities to China from Japan this year," SM entertainment representative Kim Young Min revealed his plans and thoughts on what has been expected to happen in 2014 at a recent interview (27th) with Korean Economical Newspaper at the SM building.
With EXO's first full album selling over one million copies in Korea, they have sensed a green light on their promotion as a company. "Since a single printed album made over a million sales, we are now in the position of being able to maintain the Hallyu wave throughout the market. If we are able to achieve a high result within the industry of our own country (Korea), we believe that we will also be able to get a good result in other countries as well.
This means that we will have an album that would reach a million sales again, in the near future. In EXO's case, 400,000 copies out of a million that were sold were the Chinese version. We were able to ensure EXO's popularity in China."
According to his research, out of about 30 million K-POP fans on Chinese SNS and portal sites, the majority are EXO fans. He says that their popularity is not only due to their performance and talents, but also the fact that there are four Chinese members, which gives an extra reason for them to support the group.
"Up until now, the Chinese market has been criticized to not have as much money. However, the situation has now changed. The amount of money used for CF, movies, and dramas have increased up to three or two times as much as in Korea.
The nation is still continuously developing rapidly. Since we believe that China is the country that is developing the most in terms of economical growth, we plan to concentrate our promotion in China. Of course, we will be continuously promoting in places such as Europe, the U.S, and South East Asian markets, using our own strategies."
"The Japanese album market has been diminishing along with other countries. The popularity of K-POP has been decreasing. However, SM artists such as TVXQ's performances has been improving. Differing from the sales that mostly relied on records and CDs, the sales made from concerts and events has been increasing rapidly. TVXQ's tour, which collected about 850K people is something which could not be easily accomplished even by many of the Japanese top stars."

Date: 2014-02-03 05:07 pm (UTC)And Tohoshinki worked hard for their success in Japan! If other KPop-groups would try the same thing, then the Japanese album market wouldn't be diminishing for Korean groups, I guess! x.x

media play, it was actually four albums that helped it hit a million.

1. i'm guessing they will keep OT 12 for these promotions, but also push M when they can to highlight that they do have Chinese members.
2. makes me wonder if SJM and Exo M will be doing any promotions together....it would be smart for them to do a joint concert. SM gets to tap into SJM fans for Exo M, while Exo M continues to build monolith fanbase in China.
3. is this why Siwon filmed a Chinese drama and movie? and were they testing the waters with Vic and Zhoumi's drama, to see how they could push them in the market? (it really does baffle me why hasn't SMe pushed the established Chinese artists more in their home country....maybe they fear them pulling a Geng/JYJ if their popularity does rise.)
"Of course, we will be continuously promoting in places such as Europe, the U.S, and South East Asian markets, using our own strategies."
this scares me a bit to be honest if they do wish to push further than what they already have done. i have a feeling the promoting in Europe or the US will be an occasional concert and SMTown. South East Asian markets, we have seen, has been concert with the occasional fan meet or finding particular sponsors to latch on to. if they wanted to push more in Europe or the US, they need to respect how the market is run and let go of their ego.
"The Japanese album market has been diminishing along with other countries. The popularity of K-POP has been decreasing. However, SM artists such as TVXQ's performances has been improving"
SM this is because you did it right with TVXQ in Japan. you laid the ground work, you had them learn the language and actually learn the market. but you traded all that hard work for the quickie to make the yen.
what is sad to me, not really any mention of SJ....when SJ really helped them push kpop globally.

LOL Suju and SNSD are heading to retirement home then.
Seriously tho what about SJ-M, they're fairly popular in the Chinese market. Try to push them too. Exo is going to overworked to death if this the only business plan SM had in mind!

Date: 2014-02-03 07:45 pm (UTC)interesting that he mentioned their two oldest acts and two youngest groups, though. i think it will be great if kangta's and boa's careers will be renewed when they promote in china.
but lol at 50% rise in concerts and events in china. that's pretty easy to do when you barely had your china-focused groups promote there last year.
and lol at the last paragraph. of course they had to end it with them bragging about their accomplishments despite kpop's decreasing popularity there.
but also the fact that there are four Chinese members, which gives an extra reason for them to support the group.
hmm... i think it will be good for them to keep in mind that for a lot of exo's chinese fans those four chinese members are not an extra reason for them to support the group, but they are the reason they support exo at all.
on a sidenote, he kinda looks like a not so good looking version of exo's manager (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m667qv6eVn1qclbn3o2_r3_250.gif). lol!

Way to clearly show your "local group" is a Korean product SM...
