SISTAR member Dasom revealed that her nickname is “general idea idol.”

Dasom recently appeared on KBS’s “1 vs. 100” where she talked about being a “general idea idol.” She said, “No matter how busy I am, I always read the news, and I have a lot of interest in current events. When I finish with my schedule for the day, no matter how tired I am, I always read the news on the internet for society/community, economy, politics, and global news.”

Host Han Seok Joon asked her if there is a reason she got interested in current events, at which Dasom replied, “During college, when I went on a trip with my old friends from middle school, someone asked me what the minimum wage was, and I had no idea. I didn’t really know much about the world, and I thought I should know, so I started to get some interest.”

She said, a little shy, that she has shallow knowledge and interest, but eventually showing her resolution, saying that she has been keeping up with the news for a while and that she would turn that effort into skill for the game.

The episode of “1 vs. 100” featuring Dasom airs on January 21.

This is a kind of a ~pointless post  but I really like that Dasom's committed to keeping up with current events and learning new information. Back when I was in school, I used to write weekly essays about what I'd read in the newspaper just to make sure that I was absorbing the info. I'm not thinking about going that far now, but reading the news everyday is something that I need to get on board doing as well.

I never cared much for her, but this makes me see her in a more positive light. If there's one thing I cannot stand it's when people are ignorant of or uninterested in the world in general. It's not like you need to know everything, but gosh, show some interest. (How could you not anyway!)

Also, things tend to become more interesting the more you pay attention to it, so in that sense it's good what she said. Like regularly keeping up with the news. Something might first have seemed like a random news story but after a while you start seeing the connection with developments or events elsewhere etc. and I really love that feeling.

'Knowledge girl', that's a nice nickname, keep it haha.

..and still she eats one time a day and calls it "diet". She needs to add health and medicine in her list of interests. Other than that she's really nice.

aww this is great. I hope more celebrities tell the world that they care about politics as well, this doesn't happen much in korea, especially because there are assholes (in the politics too) who say shit like how entertainers shouldn't use their fame to influence people in politics.

I have an Associated Press app on my ipad to try and keep updated. I like their coverage and the app is pretty fluid and easy to use. Any reccommended new sources?

Twitter. I know it sounds crazy but I get most of my news from all the news accounts there.

ahh this makes me happy! this was one of my new year's resolutions and tbh it's a really easy one to stick to if you have a smartphone and a few minutes of downtime here and there. plus you have so much more you can talk about and a better understanding of what's happening around the world and why

You go, girl! :) Being aware of and keeping interest in current events is a really great thing, as doing so adds to your knowledge and expands your worldview.

well i think those netizen comments are terrible but i do get annoyed that she said that, since she wouldn't have gotten roles that easily without her idol status and so many idols use that to go into acting when there are people who wanted to act and only focused on acting.

I think reading the news or keeping up with latest events is such a good thing. When I was unemployed ( still am) , all I did was read the news the entire day but I got so depressed or upset because there were a lot of frustrating incidents (ahem, the shutdown, gun violence). If I got lazy or didn't understand, I just watched Stephen Colbert. lolol.

I like how the OP had to write every week.. A lot of people don't know what's going on even when its totally affecting them and then they make such ignorant remarks...it drives me insane.

See this is the kind of stuff I'd like to know about her rather than her diet. I really respect her for keeping up to date especially when you consider their schedule.
I'm one of the old fashioned people who reads the newspaper everyday.Unfortunately english-language newspapers in my country tend to be high school quality half the time
