Beenzino's 'Dali, Van, Picasso' under suspicion of plagiarism?

Beenzino‘s most recent release “Dali, Van, Picasso” has faced plagiarism accusations.

On January 19, comments pointing out the striking similarities between “Dali, Van, Picasso” and German rapper Fiva MC‘s “Süd Sehen” started appearing on YouTube. While some listeners have questioned the originality of the song since its release, it has now been accused of not sampling, but plagiarizing “Süd Sehen.”

Netizens have claimed, “This is not sampling, the songs can’t be more similar,” and have pointed out the nearly identical intro parts, which make the songs sound very much alike.

Beenzino’s agency explained to news outlet Daily Sports on January 20, “We are currently discussing this matter with the composer of the song. Only the lyrics are by Beenzino, the song has been composed and arranged by Peejay.”

Since debuting as the rapper of Primary School‘s “Daily Apartment” in 2009, Beenzino has quickly risen to the top of underground hip hop scene, and is now making waves in the mainstream industry. With his model-like looks, charming voice, and status of being a Seoul National University student, he has received much love for his solo album “24 : 26” and his latest single “Dali, Van, Picasso.”

Beenzino has been accused of plagiarism on his song “Dali Van Picasso” these past few days, and on the 20th of January, he admitted the truth.

The director company Jazzyfact has admitted to the unpermitted sampling of American jazz artist Chet Baker’s 'Alone Together', however they had not been aware of this until the 20th themselves.

They also expressed that, in hip-hop, sampling another song is accepted to a certain extent, and that this amount of sampling would have been acceptable, however with the huge controversy and accusations coming up, they have decided to contact the original composer to compromise on how to deal with this issue.

Hopefully, the smoke will clear and matters will be resolved to benefit both parties.

i'm confused. sampling without permission isn't the same thing as plagiarism is it? are they admitting to having plagiarized fiva mc's song or chet baker's?

imo that fiva mc song sounds nothing like dali van picasso besides the use of the same sample. her flow is different from beenzino's.

yeah it's one of the dumbest 'plagiarism' controversies i've seen so far, using the same sample is literally the only similarity. Everything else in the songs is completely different

eta: oh okay this article doesn't make it clear, but most people are saying that beenzino is plagiarising Fiva MC, which is completely ridiculous, but accusing them of plagiarising because of an uncredited sample of the original composition does have some (very small) amount of credibility

oh jesus maybe it's because, I dunno, that bit is the most appropriate bit of the song to sample for the intro to a hip hop song? I'm so sick of completely ignorant netizens acting like they're experts on plagiarism

Just wanted to say I looooove Chet Baker!

And seems like both Beenzino and Fiva MC sampled Chet's song (seems like a very small part, too). So, no plagiarism here...
There songs don't even sound the same...arrangement and everything is different.

I do think they should have gotten permission to use the sample first, I think...but I actually don't know how these things work. But looks like everything is getting solved super quickly since they were smart and acted fast on it. I don't see there being much of an issue here in the long run...
