Yoo Yeon Seok : "I felt so sad when I received the script of Ep. 21 (of Reply 1994)"

On 14th of January, 2014 the interview held between the actor Yoo Yeon Seok and BNTnews was released. He talked about a lot of interesting things, such as his last drama "Reply 1994", his postgraduate study (Masters), his wishes for future role and more. But the most interesting thing to note in that particular interview is that the actor revealed on how he felt when he was given the script of the last episode of Reply 1994:

"I felt so sad when I received the script of Ep. 21. Reading the script book, teardrops kept on falling. The scene when Chilbong made up his mind to let the person he loves go, and Najeong came to the baseball stadium, he told her to stop there. I should have tried to smile at her, but while acting the scene, my heart hurt. I should have not shown my tear to her. But I teared, so I made an NG."

With regards to the infamous hypothetical question for boyfriends in that drama - "If I close the door, I feel headache due to the paint smell. If I open the door, I cough due to the smoke. Should I open or close the door?", the actor wondered if he himself would've answered correctly like Chilbong did.

"I wonder if I could answer the same. If I were him, I would say, 'If you're suffering that much, will I buy you an air purifier? (laughs) Then it can clear both the smoke and the paint smell.'"

He also revealed in the same interview that people often called him "Yoo Yeon So" ("So": Ox) because he works as hard as an ox"

he wasn't showing off, i think. in answer me 1994 epilogue 02, there was a snippet of him doing crunches and other exercises to prepare for the "answering the phone in just a towel" scene. in the gif, he and his trainer were looking if they have done enough preparation prior to shooting the said scene.

he didn't cry because he wasn't the husband, i think. he cried because of method acting? like chil bong is just a character but he is "in the zone" that he (the actor) felt he was really chil bong letting go?!

also, i think the actors in answer me 1994 (and answer me 1997) were just keeping up the gimmick of the husband mystery when they say they don't know who's the husband. the actors, or at least their management agencies, should have known if they are playing a lead character, a second lead character, or a minor character. i mean, it is important in terms of fixing filming schedules (lead actors would need more time to film, etc) and negotiating compensation or talent fees.

That sounds like Bingurae's arc, and it's fitting that Chilbongie would be the more persistent one (or stubborn and dogged), and have a different way of letting go. I do wish there was more to his arc, as you said, besides consistently liking this girl, such as trying to move on if he sees she's happy with someone else. I wish the gang of friends would confront him about his love troubles and work through it with him.

I never had a problem with him having feelings for Najung after so long, partly because I've watched other shows with similar scenarios of the friend who can't put down their feelings for someone even if they try, and depending on the scenario, the girl/guy may realize they see them as more than just a friend. It's possible depending on the goal of the show. Of course it was more unlikely this show was going to do that after building up the show around Trash and Najung.

he also played the antagonist character in architecture 101.

so far, my favorite character that he has played is the beta-male (as opposed to alpha-male) kim dong su in the born to sing (2013) movie. it's a minor role but it was interesting to see him speak in a dialect. it's also nice that in the movie, it is the girl who likes him and does everything for his sake.

I need to fight with my Korean DVD of A Werewolf Boy (it's got English subtitles for the movie, but all of the menus are in Korean) to find where the Director's Cut version is... and hope that the Director's Cut also has subtitles. I love A Werewolf Boy just as it is (legit one of my favorite movies) but I also like movies with more sympathetic villains.

He seems so nice. I enjoy character actors. They tend to be so much more sane than Leading Actors often are.
