SM Releases Statement Regarding Leeteuk’s Father and Grandparents’ Possible Suicide

A few hours after news first hit that Leeteuk‘s father (Park Yong In), grandfather (Park Hyun Suk), and grandmother (Chun Kyung Tae) all passed away together on January 6 due to a car accident, new reports surfaced which claimed that their deaths could be suicide.

According to those reports, a source from the Dongjak Fire Department stated that the bodies of Leeteuk’s father and grandparents were found at their home located in Shindaebang-dong, Seoul around 9:20AM. A suicide note was also found along with the deceased, leading to suspicion their deaths were due to suicide. More reports described that the grandparents were found lying on their bed and the father was found hanging.

With the initial report claiming that the death of Leeteuk’s father and grandparents were due to a car accident, confusion arose on whether the deceased found in their home was Leeteuk’s family members. Currently, all local media sources are reporting that it is indeed Leeteuk’s father and grandparents who were found dead in the house located in Guro-gu. Investigation is still ongoing into the exact nature of their deaths.

SM Entertainment, who initially reported that the death of Leeteuk’s father and grandparents were due to a car accident, have made another statement recently. It said, “Leeteuk is in deep sorrow. The family of the deceased is in anguish over reports on the details or on assumptions going out without constraint, and they desire to send the deceased quietly. We earnestly ask on behalf of the family of the deceased that there is restrain on sensationalist reports.”

Currently, the funeral is being held at the Korea University Guro Hospital.

Once again, we offer our deepest condolences to Leeteuk and his family.

my condolences go out to him and his sister and family, this is horrible horrible news. :( RIP. i hope someone is keeping an eye on leeteuk and his sister because they need all the support they can get right now.

The fact that it's an official statement doesn't make it any less delicate. Leeteuk doesn't need this kind of press. I think we shouldn't be making this content readily available to everyone, at least not right now. It's too damn morbid.

Considering the pain that Leeteuk and family feel right now. Dispatch decided to respect the family and refrain to make any report about it.
They said rather than celeb news, it is a family tragedy that can happen to anyone. So they decided to stop making reports and news abt it.

If it really was because of suicide, I understand why they'd want to release the news as a car accident. Either way, it's unbelievably tragic. :( Media should back off though 'cause the deceased aren't celebrities. They didn't live in the public spotlight. Turning their deaths into a media circus is just cruel for everyone affected.

taking a picture of him during the worst moment of his life is disgusting. i couldn't imagine someone taking my picture and spreading it around when my grandpa died. my heart breaks for leeteuk and the rest of his family. i hope he is able to cope with this devastating loss and find strength to keep going.

This is so tragic. Anyone would be devastated by this but Leeteuk is such an emotional person, I hope the people around him give him the extra support he needs. I hope none of those "fans" are being ignorant.

I remember seeing this gifset on tumblr in the past where Leeteuk talked about his father hitting him/beating him in the past and if the suicide reports are true then this is truly a tragedy. I just can't fathom this. My condolences go out to him and his family.

such a tragedy, i can't even wrap my mind around it. the statement the police gave about it was strange though, what do they mean his father decided to "take the grandparents with him" when he committed suicide? did he kill them? i don't mean to speculate but i just didn't understand the wording of that statement and i'm hoping to get some clarification.

i hope leeteuk and the rest of his family get through this!

Supposedly (this is probably fourth or fifth hand) his parents had Alzheimers and I wonder if he felt like if he were to go, it would be a burden to leave them so he "took them with him" so to speak.

It makes a horrible sort of sense in a way. He didn't want to burden his family further and when a person is suicidal, a lot of times their minds make these decisions that seem awful but make sense in the moment.

Reports are saying that Leeteuk's father has struggled with depression for a long time.

If this is really true, I wish all the best for Leeteuk and hope that he has the strength of family and friends to pull him through this time.
He's always seemed a bit melancholy to me (he even started the club for depressed SM idols) and if depression runs in his family, I really hope that he is able to get any help that he needs--especially at this tragic time. The fact that there is such a stigma about mental health issues in Korea is worrisome, and this is an issue that needs to be taken seriously.

About the deaths themselves, it doesn't matter to me how they happened. 3 lives were lost today and that is a tragedy no matter what and how it occurred.
I just pray that those they left behind will be able to pull through and find people to lean on. No one should have to feel that they are alone in their pain.
