10asia interview: "VIXX, our 2013 starts now"
For VIXX, 2013 seems like it will be an unforgettable year. Word of mouth started when they released January’s single “Ready to Get Hurt” with a vampire concept, and in 1 year and 6 months, they released their first full album on November 25. By creating their foundation with differentiating concepts like vampires, Jekyll and Hyde, voodoo dolls, etc. they started to catch the eyes of many this year.
Somehow, the final stage of 2013 is here. However, VIXX’s 2013 is not over yet. Rather it’s their start after releasing their first album. This year where idols in their second years like EXO and Crayonpop had extreme success, will VIXX, who has also shown an immense growth, be able to fulfill a successful conclusion? On the 24th, we attacked VIXX in their waiting room at KBS Music Bank. We asked VIXX a few questions, who were preparing for their comeback stage. With their comeback in front of their noses, their faces were full of confidence and anticipation more than ever before. They were the first idols to boldly hold a large-scale showcase in the indoor venue Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium, and also incorporated the experience they gained from performing global showcases in Sweden, Italy, the US, etc. This is really VIXX’s start.
Q: Can you please tell us your thoughts on releasing your first album?
N: Since it’s the first album, it brought back old memories. It was something I dreamed of since debut. We always talked about releasing a full album when we were ready, but this time we really worked hard and released it, so it makes us happy.
Ravi: It seems like we worked really hard this year. We’re always busily preparing, but this time we really thought we were ready, so we feel proud. Excited and worried as well.
Q: It was just the beginning of this year that your goal was to let the name VIXX be known to a lot of people. You received a lot of love to be able to hold a showcase in a gymnastics stadium.
Ravi: We have received a lot of love. We’re also very thankful to fans. However we still don’t think VIXX’s name is very known. We’ll work hard to repay the love we received, and to let the name VIXX be known.
N: We’re getting more and more greedy.
Q: Having differentiated concepts is the secret to success. The concept this time is voodoo dolls. How did this idea come to be?
N: Whenever the company comes up with a concept, they just tell us to give it a shot. So then between us we throw some ideas around, and they collaborate well with us. After that, whenever we have opinions, “I think it’s good if we do it like this”, “I think it’s good if we do it like that”, they take notes of what we say, and this is how we complete a concept.
Q: What do you mean by throwing ideas around?
Ken: Something like zombies or magicians, a fantasy-like feeling? I also talked about a police concept before. (laughs)
N: We talked about sorcerers before too, we talked about a lot of different things.
Q: Besides “G.R.8.U”, all your concerts were fantasy-like and not without darkness.
Ravi: It’s what we want to show. We think it’s what a lot of people are anticipating too.
N: More and more coolly!
Q: There’s probably not a suit you haven’t worn yet.
N: If it’s VIXX, it’s a suit.
Q: We can’t leave out your performances. Is there a point that captures the “Voodoo Doll” choreography?
N: Actually, to express the concept, everything is the point. The concept is the most important thing, so it can’t be only us knowing but the people watching also have to be able to tell. Every member has their own point in their parts, but it’s really regrettable that we don’t have one part that really stands out in the choreography. Each member worked really hard for each of their points.
Ravi: The part that explains the concept well as a whole is “May it all be fulfilled”. We make a cross with our fingers (middle finger crossing over index), and it means “good luck”. The meaning of a voodoo doll is sacrificing one’s self to fulfill everything. So the fingers crossed explains that meaning the best, and it’s the part that can be shown at once.
Q: Your choreography where you get stabbed has been banned from the music shows. You edited the violent parts of it, but how did you save it?
N: We substituted the stabbing with our hands. The other things were filled in with our facial expressions. It was the best point that explained our concept well, so it’s regrettable.
Ravi: It was like a real voodoo doll being controlled by the needle, so having to edit that was regrettable. We’re trying to save that feeling as much as possible.
Q: What part of the album did you pay most attention to?
Ravi: The title song of course! We completed the album with thoughts to match the title song’s concept. So we created a successful album. It’s a full album, so every song was written with care. It showcases VIXX’s different colors, as well as songs that we haven’t been able to show before. My composition is also included.
Q: Ravi has a composition, as well as rap-making credits to 10 songs. You must have been busy, but when did you write these lyrics?
Ravi: I’m always sketching. It’s things I’ve thought about or if there’s a fixed theme, I work to match that.
Q: Where do you find your inspiration?
Ravi: Mainly from listening to foreign artists’ lyrics, but recently I’ve gotten inspiration from watching dramas. Especially the emotional parts.
Q: Which dramas do you watch? Is it maybe the one you recently… (VIXX made a cameo appearance on SBS ‘The Heirs.)
Ravi: No. (laughs) I always watch dramas once they’ve ended.
N: He watches it all in one go.
Ravi: Recently I’ve watched SBS ‘A Gentlemen’s Dignity’, and KBS ‘Secret’ which ended not too long ago.
Q: Which song would you like to recommend the most on this album?
Hongbin: I like the song called ‘Beautiful Killer’. First of all, the members did a great job at recording it, and the guide version was great from the beginning so I kept listening to it. The main vocal hyungs packaged it well.
N: We’re that good.
Hongbin: Not the leader vocal. (laughs)
Hyuk: I like the pre-release track “Because the Answer is You’. The atmosphere is good, and it was also fun to record. I practiced a lot with the person who directed the vocals so it has a deep meaning to me.
Ravi: For me it’s (of course) my song. (Ravi’s composition is ‘Secret Night’.)
Ken: Someone else should have said that…
Ravi: Didn’t seem like anyone would so.. (laughs) This is the first time my composition has been released officially. I got the copyrights for creating the logo song for KBS FM ‘Super Junior’s Kiss the Radio’, but besides that there’s nothing. I revealed some of my compositions to fans before too, but this is the first time VIXX sang this song as a whole so I paid a lot of attention to it. I’m also personally very satisfied that my song was selected for VIXX, and the members also did well. There are a few regrettable points, but the satisfaction is greater.
Q: What songs do the rest of the members like?
Leo: ‘Someday’. It’s a song that makes you think of Fall while listening to it, a warm feeling comes from the drums, so I felt happy recording it.
Ken: No matter what, it’s the title song for me! It seems like we poured our strength in the title song. We paid a lot of attention to it in the way that we would keep re-recording certain parts.
N: To be honest, I really like all the songs. Even when there wasn’t an album, I kept listening to it. If I had to pick, there are two songs, I really like ‘Thank You for Being Born’ and “Someday’. Because my voice is so good… (All: Hahaha)
Ravi: That was the reason?
Q: N’s vocals has improved a lot since debut. Did you work especially hard for that?
N: Listening and watching became a big help to me. Actually I didn’t have a lot of chances where I could, but I watched a lot of videos and though about singing a lot. I felt more confident, and more interested than before.
Q: Hongbin’s vocal ability has also improved.
Hongbin: I kept practicing. If there was a turning point, it was when Ravi put a lot of pop songs in my MP3? I listened to those a lot and found a lot of references. (Famous foreign singers) are amazing live. I received a lot of inspiration from that, and thought that it would be good if I could do at least this well. I put in a lot of effort.
Ravi: I am the pop preacher!
Q: Hongbin’s facial expressions and acting in the ‘Voodoo Doll’ music video stood out. What feeling did you immerse yourself in?
Hongbin: Before filming for the music video, I referred to Lee Byunghun sunbae-nim’s movie ‘I Saw the Devil’. I didn’t watch it specifically for the music video, but it became a reference before as I was watching it. I thought about how following those kinds of expressions and expressiveness would be good. The moment our concept of ‘voodoo doll’ was decided, it became a big help.
N: Hongbin really practiced a lot. He was always alone in the practice room in front of the mirror doing something, but once you look he’s practicing his acting.
Q: Compared to the other members, Leo doesn’t express himself as much. Was there ever a regrettable moment where you wanted to express violently but you couldn’t?
Leo: Rather than feeling regrettable, I always want to convey the feelings I feel while singing on stage. That gives me a lot of strength to stand on stage. In order to feel a lot, I prepare that much more, and grow. Therefore I don’t feel much regret towards not being able to express myself.
Q: On the 17th you felt really touched when you held a showcase in the Gymnastics Stadium. Especially N who showed his tears.
N: Ah, I don’t remember that. (laugh) (All: Hahaha) I cried because I suddenly thought of all the hard times. When the showcase was over I broke into tears again. The members comforted me.
Ravi: You really cried a lot though?
N: What do you mean cried a lot. I only cried for a bit. (laugh) I cried even more because the members kept telling me ‘It’s okay’.
Q: On that day, Ken sang his ‘The Heirs’ OST ‘In the Name of Love’. You showed that you changed a lot in terms of vocals compared to debut.
Ken: When I first entered the company, I had a husky and stifling sound rather than a tight sound. I put in a lot of effort to change that. Since I sang mainly dance songs, I had to sing faster and I paid a lot of attention to not have any stifling parts. Did I improve?
Ravi: Of course you improved a lot. Your range is wider.
N: You were good from the start. (laugh)
Ken: The dongsaengs and hyungs helped me by recommending me songs and I practiced a lot.
Q: At the showcase Ravi showcased a different hiphop style with his composition ‘껄렁껄렁’ [Shady]. Do you prefer the hiphop genre?
Ravi: I don’t choose, I like everything. I just say ‘I really like this’ when I like something. I like a lot of artists too. The first one that I really wanted to resemble was rapper Ludacris. I listened and studied his music a lot.
Q: Hyuk was called ‘Han Sanghyuk Oppa’ by an official news article. When do you feel most masculine?
Ravi: Hyuk-ie? But Hyuk-ie is a baby… He’s more manly compared to his peers. Out of all the maknaes in other teams, he is the most manly. Firstly he’s tall and big-boned. He does have aegyo, but he also has this surliness. It’s not like there’s a big age difference, he’s a manly kid.
N: When you look at our peers, he’s a manly style. In the hyungs’ eyes, we always see him as the maknae so he’s not manly. Look at how cute he is (laugh)
Q: The hyungs think Hyuk is really cute. Does Hyuk do a lot of aegyo?
Hyuk: Me? (Stiffled laugh) No. (Haha)
N: He doesn’t do aegyo, but take it as aegyo. (laugh)
Q: 2013 is an unforgettable year to VIXX. What are your thoughts about this year?
N: As we wrap up this year, the things we thought about one by one became whole. When we said, ‘Ah, we want to do this thing like this. Let’s become like this’, we fulfilled it. The six of us fulfilled it together so that makes us really happy and more confident. So we’re thinking next year ‘We’ll do better’. We’re really excited for next year. It’s always a new start, but it’s exciting.
Ravi: We think we’re always working hard on other things. After debuting the members kept growing. Maybe that’s why we’re always looking forward to the future. And this year was just the start. It seems that this year will decide how to spend the remaining month of this year. It’s really exciting. We can’t send off the year yet.
Q: What is the biggest goal you have for this first full album?
N: Our goal has never changed. Not the scary kids, the kids wearing lenses, the kids doing weird concepts, but we want to be VIXX who does those concepts, VIXX who sings those songs, VIXX who wears those lenses. We hope VIXX can be be the ones leading the trend.

Until I could become a singer, there were many people who I received help and support form. To the parents I love, I must have hurt you when I asked you to support me who wanted to become a singer. But I understand too well now. If my parents weren’t there, I wouldn’t have become a singer, and I wouldn’t be able to receive the love I have now! As our first album is being released… I looked back at myself and it was a time that I learned a lot.

I know most starlights want them to win before 2013 ends, and of course i want that too, but i have another wish. Which is tpfor them to eb invited to the gayo festivals. Them winning any awards at the year end cerominies is not in the cards unfortunately. Waaay to many sunbaes ahead, exo had a big year. And the newcomer award wont work since it's their sophomore year already, i hope they at least get to perform on the festivals.
