Let’s meet SHINee: Versatile artist Key distinguishes himself in musical world

SHINee is shining in various areas including the K-pop world. SHINee, which has proven their power in the K-pop world with its fifth album ‘Everybody’, is drawing attention with individual activities. Min-ho became an actor through MBC’s ‘Medical Top Team and the other members are active in musicals, songwriting, and variety shows. The SHINee members are having busy days in many different areas, but they always keep their bright smiles. Either on stage or backstage, SHINee always shines. STARCAST takes a close look at each member’s individual activities of the shining SHINee. Today’s member is Key emerging as a blue chip in the musical world.


Key’s debut work as a musical actor, ‘Catch Me If You Can’



Key took the first step as a musical actor through ‘Catch Me If You Can’ last year. Key, who became a musical actor following Onew, took the lead role Frank in ‘Catch Me If You Can’. It was an exciting and fearful challenge, he was not lonely because there were other idol stars who started their musical career through ‘Catch Me If You Can’ such as BEAST’s Son Dong-woon and ZE:A’s Dong-joon, and artists from the same agency including SuperJunior’s Kyu-hyun, GIRLS’ GENERATION’s Sunny, and Dana were with him.

Key’s decision to play Frank was the best choice. Frank is a 19-year-old genius swindler and a young boy whose parents are divorced. The role was perfect for Key from SHINee, which showed a fresh and young feel in ‘Replay’and ‘Juliet’ and charisma in ‘Ring Ding Dong’ and ‘Lucifer’. After the musical ended, he said, “Musical was a challenge to me and it was very helpful,” on MBC Music’s ‘One Fine Day’. In the show, he chose UK as his traveling destination for a musical. He said, “I think that I should see an original to do well.”


Happy criminal, ‘Bonnie and Clyde’



Key, who played a genius swindler in 2012, became a criminal Clyde in ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ in 2013. He became a more mature person and he took a serious attitude when he attentively listened to what the other actors were saying or when he put on makeup. He showed great determination for the second musical and became more relaxed than before. At the press briefing of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ held on August 19, Key said, “I was always with the other four members. Now I am alone. I think that I can show my talent as much as I want. I will enjoy performing on stage.”



Key looked relaxed in the waiting room as well. Key showed his presence as a true musical actor by shouting ‘Paiting’ cheerfully together with other actors and waving his hand toward a camera right before coming up to the stage. Key seemed to have totally fallen in love with a musical. Key said, “I can speak and dance as I like on stage. The beauty of a musical is that audience members can immediately respond to the actor and smile at him/her.”


Secret behind Key’s growth? Good sociability!



Key had to spend busier days than anyone else as the promotion of ‘Everybody’ was overlapped with musical performance. To show a perfect performance in terms of acting, singing, and dancing, teamwork with the other actors is crucial. Key used his own sociability for build teamwork. Look at the picture taken together with Kim Min-jong, Shin Jae-hee, Kim Ji-hee, and Mun Eun-su (from left, clockwise), and you will find that Key gave them his autographed CDs with his message for them. The picture where actors are taking a picture of themselves with Key with a big smile on their face demonstrates that Key is very popular among them.




‘Bonnie and Clyde’ ended successfully. Key will play D'Artagnan in the new musical ‘The Three Musketeers’ from December 13 to February 2, 2014. Idol stars ZE:A’s Park Hyung-sik, SuperJunior’s Sung-min, and 2PM’s Jun.K also joined the musical. Key plans to emphasize his personality as a new D'Artagnan of his style. Key continues to build his musical career without a pause. Now is the time to emerge as a ‘master Key’ in the musical world as well as in the K-pop world.



Let us hear from the idol-star-turned-musical-actor Key.

Q. What is your resolution to the musical ‘The Three Musketeers’?

Key: The musical ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ gave me an opportunity to think more about how I see a musical and how audience see me. I feel a sense of pressure to think that I should improve more as a musical actor through 'The Three Musketeers', but I will enjoy my job as a musical actor because I can find fun from new musicals always. Most of all, I want to talk a lot with the co-stars SuperJunior’s Sung-min and ZE:A’s Hyung-sik, who appeared in ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ with me.

Q. What special preparations did you make for musical acting?

Key: I did not have enough time to only focus on the musical. I took time out of my busy schedules to practice and review myself. It did not have enough time since I had to do both national and international activities as SHINee. Reviewing myself on the move helped me a lot. I watched the videos of many musicals. Most of all, however, I focused more on correcting my mistakes and reviewing myself on a video because I felt strange to see a musical actor Key, not as a singer Key from SHINee. I studied a lot to find what I can do best while emphasizing my own personality.

Q. What did you learn as a musical actor?

Key: I enjoyed new experience. I do not have much experience yet, but I am ambitious to appear in more musicals. I realized that I should be more humble after working with the passionate other actors and staff members. I always make up my mind to become a master Key who always does his best, but it feels very awkward to talk about something this serious.

Wow... just WOW. I knew Key did musicals but I never looked into it. I figured he was just a character in them but not apart of the MAIN CAST. I'm at a loss for words I don’t want to keep using "wow".

The first time I really noticed Key was during this video of him speaking English during One Fine Day or some Shinee show... and I thought he looked like... unreal, honestly. Haha. I don't know, I was like, this kid what's going on.. and I still sort of feel that way. There's something about him, he's ethereal. I really like Key, he's fun and great to look at. He has my second fave voice in Shinee I think.

He definitely has an odd combination of features that work well together. I like to say he's 'model pretty' because he's attractive in an unconventional way. I just like sitting and staring at his face sometimes because like you said he can look so unreal sometimes.

You may slowly walk into the dark side... LOL. Key's great and easy to love if you like people that are bold, upfront and sassy... but at the same time caring and just very... human. Key's really intriguing because he's also a softy and cries rather often compared to other members and imo he's constantly shifting from being really insecure to feeling really secure. It's kinda entertaining to watch him be all embarrassed and then not give a fuck.

i'm so fucking glad it's finally time for key to improve his versatility with actual things like musicals and not just the usual girl group dance covers on variety (THAT I UNDOUBTEDLY LOVE! BC HE'S THE BEST...LEAVE MY STAN GOGGLES ALOOOOONE!).
it's finally time for ppl to realize key is not some nugu of shinee but his own personality with dreams and hopes and actual goals. one of them rn is to become better at musical acting and i am so fucking proud of him. T~T i wish i could see them to form my own opinion. but nonetheless i heard he improved a lot from cmiyc to b+c!!! so i'm extra happy ;~~~~~~~~~~~~~~; i'm sure he works on his singing too..but with recent promotions he just didn't have enough time to give it his all...and yet he still did and worked hard for every performance! and now he's going for three musketeers and i can not be happier! ;A; get out there bb! take all you can get!

Also, idgi when ppl say there's something in his personality that he needs to work on. I actually think how unafraid he is to speak his mind is his best trait. I like a guy with some spark. Matter of fact, he should have his own show. But I don't know if he'd be allowed to cuz that boy has no edit button (which is refreshing to me so i wouldn't mind)

Also, I'm really glad he is so into musicals because he really needed some individuality away from SHINee. He's got a very flamboyant nature and I feel like maybe he's been suppressing it for a long time because i've noticed that he was never really meant to be the best in anything in SHINee. Just kind of a jack of all trades. I hope he improves his acting, does more work in theatre, and at least becomes the member best known for musical acting in SHINee. That'd be nice.

I love Key so much, he's so precious. I got into SHINee because I saw a pic of Key and got so obsessed with him...he's perfect really, I can't put it into words.

I feel like he's finally found what he really wants to do besides shinee and I can only support him. I have high hopes for Key, I wish he becomes the best idol-musical actor but mostly I want him to shut up all those haters with his talent. I'm so so so proud of him and god I'd love to see any of his musicals live.

Key is really my ultimate bias. I don't know how he makes it, but actually first time I saw SHINee in LLO MV, I like taemin first I dont know why. Then Hello baby happened and it was key's glory for me. His personality makes HB interesting, not to mention another glory which is his RDD hair.. *_*
What makes me solidified him as my fav kpop idol was this performance in 2011. It was Hallyu Dream Concert and they performed RDD & Lucifer. You could see other members really exhausted, they danced just like moving body randomly and then there was Key still kicked ass in his performance + hyping up the crowd. He is the only one who give life to that performance. This is the point when I think he is no joke, fully commited with his job, totally awesome performer, and admirable person. That's why I upset each time people accused him with lazy dancing, coz he is not and never, even till now.
Another thing that made me fall over him is this fanaccount. I dont know if this is true, but I think if the source is from trusted shawols in twitter then it might be. Here is the fanaccount:

I recently volunteered at an orphanage. It isn’t anything almighty…. just teaching the children art. However, on the list of donors of art supplies to the orphanage, I saw Kibum’s name. I then asked the head of the orphanage and he said that it’s idol SHINee Key. He added that once every 3 months, Key will buy and send over a batch of paint and color pencils. I told him that I am Key’s fan and he said “both idol and fans are good people, thank you very much”.

During dinner, I asked the head of the orphanage and he said that Key started helping 2 years ago. Key personally said that he knew about this place through his friends. The head of the orphanage said that when he first saw Key, he kept a low profile and didn’t seem like an idol. Key will send over supplies regularly and even call often to check if anything more is needed at the orphanage.

^this made me fall over heels with him and I don't think I can change bias one day in the future. This is totally my ideal type. Someone who cares with society. There was also this article on his birthday this year that mention about his donation to charity since 2009. It's freaking 2009, when SHINee hasn't been as popular as now.
Obviously, he is not perfect, but those things that I wrote outweight his weakness for me.
