Were you alright with filming at a deserted house today?

Ah, I watched The Conjuring recently, so I was suddenly kind of scared… I’m not afraid of ghosts but I’m afraid of the eerie atmosphere.

But we’re here together with you, aren’t we? So I don’t think anything bad will happen?

Many bad things happened in the movie though, oh crap.

Don’t people recognize you when you go to the theatres?

I wear my cap, so no one recognizes me. Like that day when I watched The Conjuring, they were having a movie premiere for Hwai so all the attention was over at the other side.

Do you go to the theatres to watch movies often?

I like to watch all the movies that open on theatres. I watch them mostly alone, because it’s comfortable to watch alone. Our dormitory is near COEX, so we could get there almost immediately. When I really want to watch movies on days we’ve schedules, I would make use of the early mornings to watch it.

Be it the mood or characters, are there movies where you feel “Ah, this movie is my cup of tea”?

A Dirty Carnival or A Bittersweet Life

. I want to portray a darker image. The team I’m working with is very optimistic, the current image is kind of too bright for me.

If you could create your own performance or music, how would you want to do it?

I’m currently learning how to compose. Since now I kind of know the members’ unique characteristics, I think I’ll be able to do it well.

Which characteristics for example?

In Ricky’s case, his voice is husky but his vocal range is high. Changjo’s voice is suited to sing the strong parts. Changjo’s able to bring out his style in his parts.

What do you think is your charm?

I don’t think I’ve been able to fully show my rapping skills. I’ve never thought about my charms. Hey reporter, do you think of your charms on a daily basis?

Because L.Joe, you’re someone who stands on stage.

I really monitor my performances closely but I see nothing else except my weakness. Sometimes my expressions or gestures turn out weird. It’s not the expressions I’ve practised. I feel frustrated. I had practised so much but it looked so weird on the cameras; I end up brooding over it the entire day. I would watch it again till I stand on stage the next day. My personality’s a little weird so I would be glum the whole day.

To the extent you wouldn’t be able to talk to your members?

I do talk to them (laughs)

So, you can’t think of your charms?

I have no charms. Ah, wait I do have one! When I’m expressionless, I look really cold but when I laugh, I end up looking like a fool. My extreme sides? My friends tell me that I should stop laughing because I look like a fool.

Teen Top’s songs talk about how the young generation of people date. Are you able to emphathise with the emotions portrayed?

I feel a little embarrassed while saying this but our members are clueless about love. It was easiest to understand the lyrics of ‘Miss Right’ or ‘Rocking’. ‘No More Perfume On You’ was the hardest for us to understand. It was ridiculous, how could someone two-time… But we liked the lyrics because it was interesting. Regarding those songs that talk about breaking up with the girlfriend and wanting to get back with her, I think I need to study more about that.

How do you plan on studying that?

Somehow, I’ll figure it out.

When do you feel like a youth?

When my back hurts as I dance.

What was the one thing you wanted to do when you turned legal?

Drinking with my friends.

Do you actually think that people still wait till they turn legal to drink?

But I came to Korea when I was 18. It is even more difficult to buy alcohol in America. I know this not because I tried it myself (laughs). So the moment I turned legal, I drank.

Who did you drink with and how much did you drink then?

It was at the company gathering. I think the members were there. I was really drunk. I think the younger members were judging me. So from then on, whenever I said I was going to drink, Niel and the rest would stop me. Initially, when I feel stressed out I would watch movies alone or just walk on the streets alone. Recently, I like to meet up with people and talk to them. To be honest, I don’t know the taste of alcohol. Is alcohol bitter or is it sweet?

What do you like to talk about when you drink? We usually talk about celebrities, you know.

I think I would only know the answer if I drink now (laughs). Initially, we talked a lot about the entertainment industry but recently, we talk about useless things and say “let’s drink up”, “drink more”. I think it’s more fun and frank that way. Laughing without a cause. I tend to laugh a lot when I drink. I would laugh at things that aren’t funny.

What do you think was the craziest moment in your life? When was it?

I go crazy when I’m on stage. I can only make those expressions in front of the camera.

Have you watched your audition video again from 3 years ago?

Sometimes, Niel & Ricky would play that video in the car. To be honest, I find it annoying (laughs). So I would search from Niel’s video. His video was as weird as mine.

What did you feel when you watched your audition video again?

I couldn’t bear to watch it. I can’t bear to watch those variety shows we filmed right after our debut. I can’t bear to watch our promotional activities for ‘Clap’, ‘Supa Luv’ and ‘No More Perfume On You’. It got better for me after ‘Crazy’

I heard that the song in your audition video ‘Call Me Gangster’ was written by you?

Yes. I wrote it when I was living in America. I wanted to look fiercer so I performed the song. I’ve wrote many ballads so far

How do you find that song personally?

I like it.

Do you think it’ll be good if your members sang the song?

Yes, totally!

You spent your childhood in America. Did you feel that the culture was really different and you felt uncomfortable?

It was difficult for me as an Asian when I first arrived in America. It was during my 4th/5th year in elementary school; I couldn’t speak English so I wasn’t able to communicate with the rest. My fellow Korean friends helped me out a lot. I was ridiculed often too. I don’t know why, but from then on, I started to act as if I was a strong person. When my Asian friends were looked down upon by my American friends, I would stand up to defend them. In order not to disappoint my parents, I never fought. I would never do things that my parents hate. I wanted to do music; but I was afraid m parents would be disappointed, so I was careful when I raised the topic.

Do you feel that you’ve realized your dream?

My dream was realized when I made my debut. As compared to a dream, I now have a goal in my mind. I want to be a respected singer.

You’re already 20, what did you do on the “Coming-of-Age” day?

I didn’t do anything special. I know the fans gave me presents to commemorate that day but now I feel like I don’t really have the time to celebrate those special days. I don’t usually celebrate my birthdays. I feel so shy about it, I just want to avoid it. I hope I would always have schedules on those days.

If you could only have one wish for your birthday this year, what would you wish for?

“I hope there would be more transformations in 2014. I want to be a better person” That was the exact same wish I made last year.

Which 1990s movie made the greatest impact on you?

It was

Magic Kid Masuri

! That was my greatest joy in life because I left for America. Masuri was a character that I was envious of. I found him so amazing and cool. Although I feel that it’s kind of childish now.

That was really interesting, I never would have guessed that L.Joe had that personality. Now I want to see something dark, brooding and theatrical from Teen Top... he seems to have a lot of aesthetic sense and a strong personality, I hope he succeeds.
