yeah it's pretty amazing that they were all named at the end. it makes the vid feel more 'intimate' or candid somehow, plus the connection between gd and his fans, either the ones who were there or in general
I love this. It's such a sweet way to advertise to the galaxy and do the MV at the same time. I was pleasantly surprised that the fans were all on the credits as well. Nobody can ever say that GD doesn't care about the fans or know how to work a crowd.
This was a cool idea. Funny that he's in a big glass box and they still have to have crowd barriers. I was like, why's the car there, free advertising? And then of course he roars off in it in style~
I read your other comments and I agree on some points. People sometimes overestimate GD but I still think that he's talented. I do think that maybe he got inspired from this but I don't see what's wrong with being inspired by other artists, I do shake my head at people who say he's a genius, super original and groundbreaking tho.
I guess to me the similarities lie with the intention: Jay-Z performed at the MoMA and he was set up like he was an art exhibit for fans to look at / record / take pictures of / interact with. And GD is basically doing the same thing, I mean the set literally looks like an exhibit. Also, the aesthetics of the videos are very similar (the whole all white everything, the way they walked around, even the clothes)
idk, for me it was literally my first thought upon seeing the Japanese PV
It's important to note this isn't Jay-Z's idea either. It all comes back to the performance artist Marina Abramović and maybe the idea of performance art in the first place who was set up at the MoMA for visitors to interact with (you'd take turns staring at her or sitting across from her). She's also in the video. The set-up in the video is very close to her set up as well. So, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing.
I'm an artist, too and for me it's like...hmm, they're aren't really original ideas anymore but just how people build on top of what's already there--what can you add that will make this different again? In Jay-Z's case he got to interact with his fans up close and personal. Abramović, in contrast, only sat across from the visitors--most likely complete strangers to her and her work and doesn't say anything. G-Dragon, while not getting up close and personal kind of makes himself a skeptical for the fans (he is literally a goldfish) by caging himself up and interacting with objects and allowing those around to record him--so now, those people all get a little mention at the end.
I think they both do a good job with what Abramović started and thanks for posting this. It's good to compare similar things. Especially with music videos, this sort of thing happens all the time and it's not a bad idea to trace to the roots.
Yes, I know. I actually went to Jay-Z's exhibit as well as Marina's "The Artist is Present" when it was at the MoMA like 3 years ago.
For me, GD has a long a storied history of taking from black hip hop culture in his videos / his fashion / his music / etc. and while although I do understand that the video was "cute" and a nice gift for fans, I roll my eyes when people praise him for being so original and groundbreaking. Like, in this case he didn't even try....
Ah, this is true. But the same can be said for many. Not just GD and not even just in Korea. In this case I don't think this is even the worst case of that and GD has has had some pretty bad cases. That being said, I don't think many were laying on the praise here--oh, maybe on youtube for sure--but I think it's just been relegated to cute and nice on Omona. Or on this post, at least. I can understand the frustration though, especially as a black person, but for this I can't say I really feel much annoyance for the taking of hip-hop culture. Especially since I don't consider this an idea sparking from hip-hop and it's roots but one in which a hip-hop artist, Jay-Z, is getting inspiration from the contemporary art world, gaining an interest, and using it. I do get that need for credit given where it is due but I'm not sure it would go back to hip-hop and it's culture or black culture, even, in this case. Don't let any over-praise of the MV get to you toooooo much, especially since there are quite a few who agree with you. Me included, even though my opinion varies.
Big Bang had a Bad Boy stage like this too, last year - trapped together on a little platform with fans all around and looking a little freaked out. GDragon also did something similar for Breathe - white bed on a white stage surrounded by reaching hands.
So I loved this. GD has balls of steel. That was the predominant thought while I watched this. Think about it. He put himself in a glass cage surrounded by his fans where he had to lipsynch, do aegyo, and put on a show for them for who knows how long. Maybe they magically got it all in one take, but I have a feeling it took some hours. Doing all that posing and I-don't-care stuff isn't easy especially in a crowd watching and filming your every move. Like or dislike him, he's a true performer. Also it's sweet that this also worked as a gift for the fans. <3
This was my thought as I watched the MV too. I could never do something similar, because I'm too self-conscious. Whatever I sometimes think about GD's music, image, or rap ability, I can't deny he's a fantastic performer. His stage presence is ridiculous.
Jiyong is obviously not a self-conscious person, dancing around in a glass box surrounded by hundreds of fans recording his every move haha.
This was a sweet mv, I like that they also used the fan's recordings. I'm not just saying it because I'm a fan of gd, but I feel like his relation with his fans has always been very good. I think this mv can be read as both a gift from jiyong to the fans as from the fans to jiyong, who'll have his back no matter setbacks etc.
I wonder if it was Jiyong or someone else who painted all those words on the set. I cannot help feeling sorry about that piano actually. Also, that's his car right? Yes, you have indeed a nice car gd. You've done well in life eh :')
GD caged with his fame is his paradox. The best part of this is that is for fans made by fans, that is his way to recognize his people and that speak a lot for him. Is a plus he look so fine in it.
Welp, we've established that this idea definitely has been done before but:
I like the execution--it's a bit flashier than it's predecessors but still simple. I like the switching between the MV film crew footage and the fan video footage. Fan mentions and thanks at the end was a nice touch.
