After volunteering her time in Africa, Nam Gyuri revealed her new life goal.

On November 12, Nam Gyuri, along with a group of stars, appeared for the press conference for SBS’ Hope TV SBS at the Prism Tower in Sangam-dong.

I didn’t know. It’s embarrassing but I didn’t know why people went all the way to Africa to help people there when there are so many people in need in Korea,” said Nam Gyuri, reflecting upon her experiences in Rwanda. “But after I came back from Rwanda, I thought a lot.

She explained that she realized that she was disappointed in herself for taking things for granted while living in a stable environment in Korea, where she’s able to do and learn many things.

My visit to Africa became very special to me. If it’s possible, I want to continue visiting and spreading warm hearts.

Nam Gyuri talked about how many stars started building schools in Africa in their names. “I also want to help with that. If it’s possible, my goal is to build five schools before I die.

Nam Gyuri’s experiences in Rwanda will air on November 15 and 16.

my thoughts on Rwanda's government aside, good for you but i hope you're not just building schools, hope she also considers that in addition to building the infrastructure, there's also a real need to train teachers, providing books & pencils for students, etc? don't just build the infrastructure, make sure it'll actually be useful to the community.

why do people talk about africa as a monolith smh, like you're doing work in a specific country, talk about that country. africa is a huge continent and not every contry has the same needs/is in the same situation gOD.

yeah that bothered me too, she seems to have been specifically referring to Rwanda yet the article says Africa like it is a country

Psh. I hate reading bs like this bc if you ppl don't give a shit about how black ppl are treated in yr country, the fuck do you think you need to be going to a continent of black ppl and offer yr "help"

I stg these ppl can't even name more than 10 countries in Africa or know about the over 200+ ethnicities that reside there but stay thinking these ppl want their help.

nothing's wrong with more money on the projects though.

I took 'Africa' subject for my third year elective and god, I'm not sure if I can pass, there are just too many countries with too many issues how can this lecturer thinks that he can teach us everything (really, everything, history, politic, issues with NGOs, agriculture, what else I can't remember) in one subject (credited for one normal subject) and one semester!????
I was literally crying when I was studying for the 25% test.
seriously he needs to make the scope smaller, well, we all did learn a whole lot more about Africa as a continent and aware of the issues and stuffs, but still...
I took the subject because it's under development, so I thought I'll learn more about the development issues, but, no, seriously, we have to understand all.

people should learn that one country cannot represent the whole continent, but oh well, people like to generalize.
still it's good for them to have nice thoughts, even though they need to understand the issues more to form a real coherent plan that will actually work.

but then many people still generalize Asia as well, as in Asia = east Asia and the stereotype of Asian women as demure, etc etc. or about Asian culture and stuffs.

I bet most people don't think of India when they're talking about Asia.

and the domestic workers and mail order bride image of South East Asia.

To be honest a lot of the idols' comments and activities in Africa reek of these gross generalizations and stereotypes, so much though that updates like these don't impress me much.
