"SNL Korea” and America’s "Saturday Night Live (SNL)” are planning a special event.

An official from cable channel tvN‘s “SNL Korea” revealed on October 18, “Recently, American broadcaster NBC, which airs ‘SNL’, has proposed a special event in conjunction with Korea’s ‘SNL Korea’ for their 40th anniversary special.”

According to the official, “The production crews of ‘SNL’ and ‘SNL Korea’ are planning to 40th anniversary special together.” They are planning a sketch where the American and Korean ‘SNL’ crews are switched.

The official went on to explain, “The hosts will be shared. We are keeping in mind the need for ‘world stars’ who can be recognized by both the Korean and American audiences.”

“There is still a lot of time left so we haven’t started casting the hosts yet.” “If the plan goes through for the crew swap, on the Korean side, Shin Dong Yup and the fixed members will head to America, while on the American side,Fred Armisen and other popular crew members will visit Korea.”

The collaboration between “SNL Korea” and “SNL” is scheduled to be broadcast next September.

When I first heard about this I kind of thought it was a joke, but it seems legit? Since I don't watch SNL Korea I don't know the cast well, but aside from Jay Park do any of them speak English? Who do you think would make a good host?

Jay park is a fixed member?
Also since they say the crew will be switched I assume that's the punchline of the skit, that they cant speak english and vice-versa

Jay's been a fixed member of SNL Korea since the beginning of this year, though if you want to get technical he's kind of a ~sometimes member now

How random.

Possible hosts: Psy, Kim Yunjin, or Steven Yeun(He would be my pick.) from the Walking Dead.

Is Clara still a fixed member? She speaks English as well but I don't know if she's still on.

that doesn't seem like a good idea. language barrier.. the korean cast would probably portrayed in a negative light.. and for me, korean humor makes me cringe sometimes.

Lol yeah, they will have to make sure to keep the humor on both sides culture-appropriate because there are a lot of things which work in the US but don't in SK and vice versa... Although I am excited to see how this will turn out...

I'll probably cover my face with my hands and peek through my fingers to watch it, if this really happens.

idk how much I believe this just bc Fred Armisen isn't even on anymore. And no one on SNL Korea is going to be recognized by American audiences (and probably vice versa tbh, idk if the American SNL is popular in Korea but most of the cast is new this season anyway) so idk why they would try to go for that. It seems like a cute idea that could work if done well but honestly I don't trust SNL to do it well, so I'm fine remaining in doubt about the veracity of this.

like, SNL USA is rarely ever funny. Doing something like this would require...cleverness. Idk how it'd work out

This isn't because of Tom appearing on the show is it? O_O

I don't think it's just about Tom being on the show. Snl korea has had other Western celebs on like Miranda Kerr and Jason Mraz

Tom may have played a part in it who knows. I shouldn't completely dismiss his appearance on the show. They could be like look at the several stars we already had so let's do this collab. I don't see anyone but Psy having some sort of recognition here for this to work since he did the U.S. version already and only person non kpop fans would know based on Gangnam style.

Yeah I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't been thinking about this for a while now & when Tom appeared, it probably gave them leverage for the idea. :/

The only time I watch the skits/performances nowadays is online if they have guest i like. Madtv was funny. From time to time I still watch the " Can I have your number" skits. Debra Wilson was always funny as Oprah or Whitney. I also liked the Destiny' s Child emotions mv skit where she was Beyonce.

Now I wanna go watch some madtv clips like the guy who did the " whole notha level"skits.

Ahhh I do the "can I gave your number" all the time to my friends lol. The stewart and mrs. Swan skits will always be my fave skits on the show

the kdrama sketches w/ Bobby Lee were sth that would have had a nice overlap humor-wise between the two markets. I loved MAD TV. It was often disgusting and offensive in hindsight (Ms. Swan amongst other things) but at the very least they had a diverse cast and somehow still managed to be funny ("somehow" since this is a huge problem for SNL).

Yeah, the Ms. Swan skits never sat well with me. I had bleached those skits out my memory and now they're back ;~;

I honestly do enjoy America's SNL though I gotta admit their jokes can be pretty blah at times. Whatever, as long as I get to see Seth Meyers speaking a bit Korean, I am a happy girl.
