most dogs in korea are. pet shops are just depressing. i've seen so many puppies in the windows that can barely even stand up cause they're so young and their heads are too big for their bodies.
korea's really turning me off dogs. all the dogs here are these little white (malteses, shizus, etc) dirty inbred looking dogs. ugh. miss all dogs over 20lbs.
exercising them isnt hard, but transporting them (dogs can only go on the subway if they're being held and taxis wont pick you up) and having space in your apartment is. lots of people are really frightened of them, too. i've walked my friend's 15lb japanese chin and it's completely normal for 25-year-old girls to shriek and run away at the sight of it coming towards them.
pet/animal culture is truly one of the hardest things for me to adapt to here.
that's so weird, although I can't really judge too much since I was scared of dogs as a kid until i had to be babysat by someone that had two kind of big dogs
i wonder how terrified they'd be of my half metre tall wolf-lookin siberian husky
Not surprised that they're small, pure dog breeds. There's a general dislike for all the bigger mutts that roam around. After all they aren't cute, fashionable and can't be used as a status symbol. A lot of those little dogs are abandoned later on anyway. Sigh. I hope the idea that dogs are objects and accessories goes away.
Hyori's the only exception I know of. I thought it's awesome Dara's cat is ordinary tabby, but apparently it's supposed to be a bengal (it really doesn't look like one). She recently tweeted she picked a sickly stray though!
Honestly, I doubt most of the idols who show off their pets properly take care of their animals. I bet they leave them locked up in those little wire-looking bird cages most of the time or tethered if its a larger breed. It's [wire cage] really not good for their feet to stand on. I've seen quite a few Koreans (when I was living in Korea) do this. To re-iterate they're treated more like objects than anything else there in my opinion. I recently read about some Korean animal and pets rights activism going on that I hope resonates with the population. Seeing dogs stuffed into cages at dog markets is friggin' traumatizing.
I don't really know about most idol I only follow a few closely but as far as Tae, Hyori or Jae are concerned they really take care of their pets. However it's true that idol and people in general tend to see their pets as accessory, especially small dogs.
Oh, I definitely can believe that those three genuinely love and care for their pets. And some Suju members that I saw on that Korean program Animal Farm.
Oh, God, I've had so many traumatizing experiences... Once when I was taking my dog to the vet, there was this cat sitting in a basket on the counter. I reached out to pet it and then it turned its head and bit my my finger. LOL...I just feel like cats are sooo unpredictable. At least with a dog, I can kind of guess what it's thinking.
Cat are actually very simple to understand: they rule the world, we are their servant. You have to know your place human ^^
Did it bite you, or did it nomnom you? My cat nomnom me to ask me to pet her, to tell me to stop petting her, when we play fight (usually if I don't let her win)... she has never bitten anyone She's a princess
I want a dog, but I don't have a garden yet, and my fiancé and I both work all day we don't want to let a dog alone for too long. I mean, cats don't really mind, they sleep most of the time, but I would feel bad leaving a bb dog alone for too long.
I'm actually very stressed these days cause we're going to Japan for 2 weeks and my princess will stay with my fiancé's grand-parents and I'm scared something will happen to her, she doesn't really know their house. I even got a day off to take her there and stay with her so she'll get used to the house. People think I'm crazy XD
Yeah, I don't know why I'm telling you this, sorry ><
Maybe he nom nom'd me? I'm not sure! I wouldn't know the difference! It didn't really hurt, no skin breaking, but it was very shocking for me to experience. I didn't know cats bite! Anyway, yeah, getting a puppy when you're working all the time probably wouldn't be a good idea. If it's an older dog, it would be less of an issue, though. Puppies need lots of attention, training and socialization.
I'm sure your cat will be fine with fiance's your grandparents! I don't think you need to worry if its only two weeks. I hope you have a lot of fun in Japan. I've always wanted to go for a visit. I probably will one of these days. People think I'm crazy, too, but about my dogs. :)
It's okay! I think it's great when people share things about their lives.
Thank you <3 I'm bad at pairing dogs with their owners seriously I had a hard time recognizing Minsy's, he looks so different from the video I saw just after she got it. The cut, maybe.
is this a post where we talk about doges and how cool they are? i recently conquered my fear of them and now i want one but the last time i got a dog i was like 5 and my grandparents took it back :/ so i've never really taken care of one. what's good low maintenance (but fun) breed? and how much do you think i'd have to shell out yearly?
Small dogs tend to be more high maintenance, same for pure breed especially those with a nice fluffy fur because that requires a dog grooming (that's english right?), monthly Labrador are great, corgi are amazing, mutt are the best
if you get a dog, please look into adoption. there are dog rescues for particular breeds if you are looking for that.
overall dogs aren't really low maintenance, and it will depend on the dog. also check your lifestyle, some dogs will need to be more active other dogs won't.
the big costs will come with vet bills. especially if the dog breed you choose has a disposition for certain issues and illness. (we didn't know pits/bulldogs have a greater risk for cancer. we were facing a $6000 vet bill to save her. unfortunately, it was too far gone and her quality of life would not have been good. we had to let her go.) some bigger breeds will have hip issues, some smaller breeds may have heart or breathing issues. just like humans, you don't really know. we learned a lesson and will have a savings account (instead of pet insurance) for the next dog we have.
do your research, talk to rescue places (some of them have open houses and if you feel you aren't ready you can try to volunteer. at some rescues, they have volunteers who come to walk the dogs or to foster them for a few months or a year to get them in a home environment.
yep, i was actually looking at dog shelters in the bay area, and the SPCA had a carnival last weekend. i wish i could have gone but yes thank you for the suggestions, i'm going to look into volunteering.
But do your research, match the dogs personality with yours, your activity and space. If you like running and hiking you can have a dog who needs activity. If you like sitting on the couch and watching Supernatural for 3 hours you need a more laid back pooch. Once you know what you want check shelters and if you want a pure breed check breed rescues.
hahaha i can't watch supernatural for 3 hours! believe me i've tried.
yeah i only want to adopt from shelters. my roommate wanted a cat actually (and the SPCA is apparently waiving fees every monday or something) but she changed her mind cuz she might not have time for it
If you're genuinely serious about dog ownership, you need to know you will shell out quite a sum of money and time taking caring of it... if you want to be a responsible owner.
It would be a good idea to save some money off to the side strictly for your animal. Decent dog food, grooming (depends on breed), yearly vet check ups, neutering, heart worm medications given monthly (these things are expensive), and vaccinations stack up. And you should take into account that accidents might happen requiring vet care.
As for the actual dog itself, if you want a particular breed, I recommend going to a rescue. Or heading off to your local pound or animal shelter. I adopted mine. They gas dogs in my state. So, it makes me feel a bit better knowing that I saved a dog from meeting that fate.

thank you for this link! this is what i was looking for. i just want something to love and care for other than myself but i don't wanna do it yet if i can't fully commit (plus there's no room for one at my current living space)
