The acoustic guitar really grabbed me at the beginning. I like the song, but it's a shame that I'm not a fan of her tone. Her voice is a bit too weak to carry a song like this, but I can see it growing on me.
The video was normal till it got to the part with the nail in their hands o_o but the rest of the mv is pretty cool. Vintage is a pretty nice song & Date Mate is fun
I have meh feelings about "Hope Torture". I'm usually all about slow-tempo r&b ballads with acoustic guitar, but this song, pretty as it may be, doesn't really move me and feels like a mid-album filler rather than the lead single. And the mv visuals just come across as a retread of "Talk That", hollow, with some lurid sensationalism thrown in near the end. I just don't think that the concept fits her, and I'm annoyed because based on what I've seen it seems like TS Ent likes to brand solo Jieun as this plaintive damsel in distress.
But the rest of the album, yes. This is more like it. I'm pleasantly surprised by "Vintage" and Zelo's feature, which I'd expected to sound awkward and out of place alongside Jieun. But both Jieun's vocals and Zelo's rapping flow well together; he's utilized a more lowkey style, which I've generally preferred to his LTE rap, and the result is nice. I like the production, it kind of has a Dan the Automator feel to it.
"Date Mate" is already my favorite track, it's the kind of groovy uptempo funk that imo fits Jieun to a T, in terms of vocals and personality. Probably because she composed and was involved in the production of the song herself? If only she could have promoted this instead.
I mean, I get that it's autumn, which is the start of wistful ballad season, but TS Ent could have broken the mold and really promoted Jieun as a solo artist with a self-composed single. Instead, they're playing it safe, in terms of song and artist image.
I'm not all about the mv either tbh. And I have similar worries as you when it comes to the way TS seems to view solo Jieun. Maybe that's why Date Mate is such a good song? For one, it has an infectious rhythm of course but as far as I understand it the lyrics are also about her determining the pace of the relationship ("I'm not an easy woman", "we need more time", "ah wait, please give me a break/leave me alone") which gives her a kind of 'power' she didn't previously have in her solo songs.
Ah, I was curious to know what the song was about! I liked the sound of it already and I was really hoping that the lyrics matched the smart sass of her voice. \o/ This is the kind of song I wish she'd promote, a song she's written herself, that demonstrates her sense of agency in so many ways.
tbh I've never been comfortable with how TS Ent has marketed her solo career. "Going Crazy" reminded me too much of "Love the Way You Lie" so I never really warmed up to it. It also didn't help that BYG's feature on it and his stalker persona onstage (next to Jieun's powerlessness) was romanticised by a lot of people who listened/watched, even though that was probably the opposite of what was intended.

TS have awful taste in promotions (See: Yoohoo, see... most everything tbh, like them trying to make BAP relevant). I love False Hope but DM would have been a much better song to promote now that I've heard them both. (And I still can't get over the fact that they just shoved her in the Talk That setting and are now promoting it like it's ~unique~.)
Eh it's all nice but kind of middling for me. The False Hope chorus has been playing in my head all weekend though lol and that MV is so beautifully-coloured (the B&W closeups are gorgeous) ;;
The music video is visually striking (So many costume changes! Dramatic closeups! Splashes of color for effect!) and Jieun looks absolutely stunning. As I said with the teaser and other performances, Jieun truly looks like she's grown into a beautiful young woman and I really appreciate this maturity in how she's presented for this album. As I said, the music video is striking, but it's not particularly cohesive and hey, if they were going to get a 19+ rating for it anyway, they could've hit the nails harder (Hardeeharhar, see what I did there?). I do think it's conceptually really interesting, but then one idea would be left off and it'd move onto the next thing, so nothing ever fully gets there. But I do enjoy it if only to gape at how beautiful Jieun is.
Song-wise, I do like the song better now that I've heard it multiple times. Its lack of a catchy hook is, as I said, interesting musically coming from an idol but at the same time, concerning for whether it will be palatable enough to garner widespread appeal.
I've always thought that Secret's non-title tracks are often better than the title tracks and Secret's title tracks often leave me frustrated that they don't adequately demonstrate Secret's talent and potential. I think that's the case again here. I like Vintage and there's a kind of calm(?) confidence about it that I like. I'm not totally in love with Zelo's rapping but I don't mind it.
I do really enjoy Date Mate though. I'm glad that TS FINALLY let Jieun be involved with the music and this song really seems to be the favorite across the board. You can tell that Jieun is having fun in this song and it portrays her as effortlessly in-control and being fabulous while doing so.
Overall, great addition to Jieun's solo discography and I just hope that she gets recognition for it! (Oh goodness I'm sorry for writing a novel. I just have a lot of Jieun feels~)
I'm really diggin' the look of the music video. I'm sort of meh about the actual song, though. It'll grow on me. I think I might enjoy it more if someone with a stronger voice is singing it.
