The latest episode of MBC's 'Human Documentary', J.Y. Park piqued interest as he touched upon the subject of Wonder Girls' U.S. venture.

The show took you behind-the-scenes into the everyday life of this singer and producer, revealing his home as well as holding an interview with this music mogul.

As he reminisced back on 2009 when he led the Wonder Girls into their advancement into the U.S., he said, "If I think about it now, it made no sense."

"Sun and I argued and didn't speak to one another for two days. However, when I think about it, there is no time period that is more valuable to me than then," he added implying that he has no regrets about their decision to try their hands at the U.S. market.

Sunmi also recalled upon the experience, stating, "Back then, rather than being the producer of the company, he [J.Y. Park] looked after us like he was our manager. So it tugged at my heart."

Regarding the criticisms he's received about his decision, J.Y. Park commented, "For all challenges, if you succeed, you receive praise, and if you don't, you're cursed and told that you wasted your efforts for nothing, so I think it was something that I had to endure."

Often I wonder where they'd be as a group now had they stayed in Korea - would they have gotten as epically huge as GG or would one have eventually surpassed the other - but I can appreciate the intent and, if nothing else, it's because of this venture that we have a happy SunYe and that in and of itself makes it a success but where I to be honest the entire venture gives me too many feelings in general in a way that I feel is too emotionally involved XD

(also, I don't think this deserves the douche tag OP)

Idk man a lot of people I know in the area know the Wondergirls from all the stuff they did in America, and they like them over GG. I can see how it wasn't exactly profitable thought, oh well.

Although the venture was way too ambitious, there were many great and positive things that came from it. The girls got to live in New York and experience life outside of Korea. They were able to meet fans of different cultures and backgrounds. They were able to experience and interact with many different kinds of people and try different kinds of food. They also learned English which is a great language to help them communicate with their fans worldwide. And they also got to have a great tour of the country and many kpop fans were able to see them perform. I went to their concert with my best friend and little sister in DC almost three years ago and I remember being so happy and proud to see them. A trip to Korea or even LA is way to out of my budget. I still look back fondly at that memory. Even if the whole venture was a bust, the concert was one of the best days of my life. I am sure girls would treasure the times they had as well.

Great points. I totally agree. Experience is invaluable. I'd love to have WG's lives 2010-2012.

that basically sums up my thoughts about us promotions. frankly i think the demise of wonder girls' popularity had a lot to do with how clumsy they were promoted after coming back.

also (i can be wrong) but i seems to me that wg were very popular to general public but they didn't a hardcore fanbase. jyp should take notes from yg and make wonder girls tv, same for miss a bc i'd like to stan these girls but i know nothing about their personalities.

They did have 3 seasons of a reality show before they left for the US, along with a "Wonder Bakery" show. And one season during their US venture documenting their tour. And they do have a good sized fan base (as of 2011 their fan cafe numbers were still higher than 2NE1's)...JYP just cannot sell/move albums regardless of who it is.

Aww I don't think it was a complete fail. Sunye found love. All the girls got to live like normal human beings and not idols for a while. They got to see the world, learn languages and work with people they otherwise wouldn't have if they stayed in Korea. I wish it would've taken off too but at the end of the day what's done is done.

OP you shoulda bolded the second part where he says he values that time, implying he has no regrets. That's nice of him.

Poor WG though, they would be so much richer by now if they had stayed in Korea and would have probably a lot better career prospects both in solo and group forms.

Bad timing, 2009 was too early and no oe care about kpop in America. Maybe it would've been a diff story if he waited few yrs. and I don't think it's a complete fail, idk

if there's one thing that I took from this it is that SunYe is a good leader.

I mean I guess it's good to take chances but it was WG's career that he was taking chances with, not his own. I can't tell from the interview, and I know that it's in the past, but I really hope that since this was such a gamble for the girls they got more control over how they promoted/style/musical sound

it wasn't THAT much of a fail. because no one actually gets success there (well PSY isn't normal), that was a reach he didn't realize. and it was a good run for them, not every group gets that.

actually, just good they went and saw and learned and grew.

US advancement wasn't a bad idea actually. There is just something wrong with how JYP handled it.

It wasn't a very good move to drop everything they established in Korea just for America. He should have kept balance between the two just so they could have a back up market.

Completely agree with you, it seemed really unprofessional to just completely forget about Korean promotions as if their success in the US was guaranteed but then again, there are good things and bad things that came out of their "failure" and one shouldn't just focus on the bad things...

yet somehow i don't think wonder girls is hurting that much :) feels like both the fans and the girls aren't in it to be popular or best-selling (they were still nominated for a bunch of awards between 2010-2012 anyway). plus their music has actually gotten SO MUCH BETTER and that's all that matters to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

op must you have the crime tag?
i get jokingly using douche but crime is a proper tag and you should use it for actual crime.

atleast wonder girls are still doing well in korea even after this venture.

i still don't think it was as big of a failure as some make it out to be. it had some fail to it, but it wasn't completely wrong. the ambitious nature of the advancement did add to the fail with certain choices tat were made.

the main wrong turns in WG's US adventure were 1. no follow through (like releasing the album) 2. not keeping a strong base in Korea while trying to push into the US market and 3. crappy movie (they could have done a YT show)

I don't have a problem with him trying, I just don't understand why he had to abandon everything in Korea for it. They could have trained, rehearsed, and recorded for their Korean stuff while living in America. One month of promotions in Korea twice a year wouldn't have messed with anything.

Date: 2013-09-15 05:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rylee900.livejournal.com
Yes exactly. They just disappeared from Korea at their peak, that's what was ridiculous. Trying to make it in the US wasn't the real problem.

I'm liking the comments here. I agree, as a wonderful, it has been hard seeing our girls go from the top group in Korea to lost in America with no comeback in sight however, i feel like they've gained soo much from being in America that it was beneficial to them. I mean, they learn't English, got to have some freedom in America (Yeeun's cute pictures of her and some of the girls clubbing probably wouldn't ever happen in Korea), expand their horizons and I feel like Yeeun's producing abilities benefited from the opportunity's they had in America.

When the girls came back to Korea to perform, i felt like they really grew as artist and had great confidence and command of the stage. All their singing improved too <3

as a fan i don't think it was a fail or a bad idea, back then they achieved so much more than any other kpop act ever had and honestly the experience was benefitial for the girls and the company.

the only problem was the lack of promotions in korea due the company's fail management that still is hurting every act.
