Lee Beom-soo and Yoon-ah as potential romantic pairing. What.

Er, what now? KBS is preparing a new Monday-Tuesday drama to close out the year called Prime Minister and I, and the two names in the mix as likely candidates for the leads are Lee Beom-soo and Yoon-ah. It’s just so odd.

Sure, they’re both headliners and popular stars. But… together? Lee Beom-soo (History of the Salaryman, Giant) is as sharp and charismatic as they come, an actor’s actor who has had so many memorable performances that you can’t pin him down to a single character or type. Intense? Done it. Quirky? Done it. Badass, hilarious? Done it. And Yoon-ah (Love Rain) is an idol star twenty years his junior (he’s 43, she’s 23).


The age difference is intentional, if that makes it any better, as Prime Minister and I is being called “the Korean Sound of Music”—except instead of an army captain and a nun-governess, we get a prime minister and a musical actress who gives up that dream to become a private tutor in his household. Great, now I’m thinking of how amazing Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer were in the original and sighing.

The project is being produced by SM C&C, which explains a lot of things. From the wording of the news articles, it sounds like the producers are trying to woo the stars; Lee Beom-soo’s reps were very careful to say that they’d received the script and the offer, but were not ready to make decisions with Lee focusing on his film (God’s Play) for now. Yoon-ah’s reps stated that although she is considering favorably, she hasn’t confirmed.

Prime Minister and I will follow Mi-rae’s Choice on KBS, premiering in December.

I know they're both legal adults, it just creeps me out for personal reasons. I just want to see them paired with cute young men their own age, haha. At least Lee Bumsoo is a good actor

It depends. Imagine if the roles were reversed and it was a 43 y/o woman with a career, financial stability and much more experience in life, with a 23 y/o young guy that is still in the "discovering life" stage. As older you get, you gain more experience and you become more cynical and more thoughtful because you lose the typical innocence and insecurity of the youth, so if we're talking about power imbalance...yes, a mature woman has more power than a young guy, so it's the same. I'm in my late 20s and when I see 18-22 y/o guys most of them look really clueless/innocent tbh.

While I get the plot amd age difference I don't see Yoona performing too well against the awesomeness of Lee Bum Soo...they need to get an A list leading actress in the younger generation for this not to be a hot mess

I agree. At first I was kinda of weirded out by the age difference, but after thinking about it in the context of a Sound of Music/Jane Eyre type thing it made more sense. I just don't think Yoona is the right type of female lead to make that type of relationship believable though.

If they want to do Sound of Music/Jane Eyre type of story, Yoona is not the best candidate to play the female lead, they should put a better actress so the story could be more believable. The young Han Ji Min / Lee Da hae will be a perfect choice. :)

she's alright? i watched love rain and she has some screen presence and she's quite charming. she really needs to improve her technique though, + her dramatic acting needs alot of work. she's more effective in lighter, rom com-y roles. there are better idol actresses than her (eunji, uee) but she's not the worst imo.

Forget age difference, Yoona can't act. For this to work (especially since LBS is a fantastic actor that can sell anything) they need a strong young actress like Kim So Eun or someone of that level.
