I think it's the opposite. They won because exo didn't show up so mb decided to give them their overdue award.

exo got -100 points deducted but crayon pop won all the other categories except for fan votes i think? did sm predict that exo will get bad rep if they win like that and thus decided to take them out i wonder

I don't think SM would care that much. Crayon Pop are popular right now and Exo have probably exceeded their expectations.
