Ever since the merger between Woollim Entertainment and SM C&C, music fans have been eager to learn whether any more mergers may be coming about, and the simple answer is probably yes.

This shouldn't be a surprise as with the previous merger, SM Entertainment, the biggest shareholder of subsidiary SM C&C, clearly revealed their hopes of becoming a leading global music group like that of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group.

In order to reach such a level, SM will need to bring in several agencies under them to become a major label or a group like the aforementioned three.

One previous report mentioned that insiders in the music industry claimed, "With Woollim as a start, there is a rumor that several companies will be going under the SM label. There are several that are already being discussed. Although many agencies are venturing into the overseas market riding on Hallyu, it's hard for them to catch up to the know-hows and network of SM, who has built up a long history... Making good music and producing singers is a separate issue from marketing them. If they are able to distribute these responsibilities through label mergers, then it is a win-win situation for everyone."

Regarding all this, an SM C&C rep did not deny it, but also didn't give specific details as he said, "As we have started a label business, we will be pursuing more label-joinings with various companies. There is a possibility open with various companies. Through this project, we look forward to an effect of simultaneous growth between SM Ent and various labels."

Since this article, a more recent one has surfaced, naming three companies in particular among the mid-tier agencies that are currently being discussed for a merger: J.Tune Camp (representative artist: MBLAQ), Starship Entertainment (representative artist: SISTAR), and WM Entertainment (representative artist: B1A4).

A rep from one of these companies is said to have cautiously responded, "It is true that we have discussed with SM before, but nothing has been decided upon."

The article mentions that it seems like these companies are waiting to see how it works out for INFINITE, TASTY, and NELL under Woollim. If SM can help INFINITE's new world tour see much success, it's expected that the next merger for SM may happen soon.

Out of that list, I feel like Starship/mainly Sistar is the only one with current overseas potential. Then again, I didn't keep up with MBLAQ's recent overseas activities so I could be wrong.

Tbh I would be down with taking Pledis or Top Media because I want to see those agencies have more power.

it makes me wonder what YG and JYP's answer to SMe's gobbling up smaller labels will be. YG is already a hot mess in that he can't seem to get his shit completely together when it comes to putting out new albums for his stable of groups or finally releasing new groups. the dates are always pushed back. and JYP pretty much lost the WG and still dealing with the recovery from the never happened American debut.

I'm inclined to think they wouldn't take on Sistar either.... though Hyorin by herself is probably super tempting.

The one that seems the most legit / likely is B1A4; they're a group on the rise, they're all wicked talented / gorgeous, and the label is super tiny and would definitely need the help.

Um... the sinking ship is pretty happy doing its own thing, having a non-batshit solid and multinational fanbase, and really getting into the groove in terms of collabs and making their own music.

Hyorin has major cachet now, but I doubt SM can work with her either.

This is not the reality I want. Anyhow only one who I want to create a sub label is YG (and I want it to be created from some of their current artists and not from some other company) into which they can move non rookie acts, so that everyone can get managed well.

The article mentioned that names the other groups/companies was an op-ed by Kim Yongho, known shit-stirrer and idol hater extraordinaire. He stans for YG and is going after SM now that they have Woollim because he hates Infinite and has been trying to slander them since MIL era. I would not take a damn thing he says seriously.

i have a hard time seeing SM turning into a Sony, Universal, or Warner music group unless they change a few things and not force the labels with their style...it is what makes people like those groups in the first place, they aren't SMe prefabricated. one of those is to make sure the labels they acquire under C&C stay apart from SMe as the two should be separate as C&C grows and get stable. SMe has an already established foothold and gimmick with their trainee school. this leaves C&C to gobble up established acts and not force the SMe formula on them while they take them worldwide.

with the groups listed, i see that SMe/C&C are going for more groups who have already pushed beyond the boundaries of Asia with some success. there is a pattern in who they are going after. i do hope they get JTune/MBlaq since Rain seemed to have abandoned them. they are a good group with amazing potential on all fronts and could benefit with SMe's connections.


edit to add: last night when i saw the news/rumour...in my head i imagined SMe as Jaws just chomping up all the labels into their belly.

i see what sm is doing and its smart business. they've got the money and these smaller companies have got the talent. why bother training people when you can have other people do the hard work, get popular then you scoop them up help them with tours and profit.
i doubt they would force the SM style on anyone they sign cause that would defy business logic
