Chrome Entertainment responds to backlash after asking fans for monetary contributions for charity instead of gifts

Crayon Pop has been met with backlash once again, but this time involving the issue of fan gifts.

Chrome Entertainment posted on Crayon Pop's official homepage

"Hello? It's Chrome Entertainment. As much as your support for Crayon Pop is growing, the members are receiving many gifts. We sincerely thank you. As Crayon Pop rises in popularity, the scale of their fan base is rapidly increasing and it is sometimes difficult to handle all the presents, so we are writing this post to ask for fans' understanding.

From now on, the gifts we receive from fans, whether it's given on-site or via mail, will not be accepted. You can gift Crayon Pop in another way instead. We will soon open up a bank account specifically for presents. Those who want to offer gifts can enter a deposit into the account. Once the account reaches a certain sum, it will be donated to help those in need and charity organizations.

The money will be donated not in the agency's name, but in the fans' names. We will transparently disclose the specific details of the donation including the total amount and where we donate the money to. Rather than the Crayon Pop members keeping the huge love they receive from fans to themselves, they decided that it would be of greater value to share it with others together.

We ask for fans' understanding. Thank you."

Despite their good intentions to give back to those in need, the fact that they did not consult with fans prior to their decision did not go over so well, especially with those who had already prepared gifts or was planning to gift the girls with items that did not have monetary value.

In addition, the wording of the post, mentioning a special bank account being set up and asking fans to send in deposits (despite the mention about it being used for charity), rubbed many the wrong way and raised suspicions of onlookers. Enough so that Chrome Entertainment has posted another message, revealing their intention to rethink their previous decision.

The agency responded, "We apologize that our post about gifting and donation caused fans concern, different from our intentions. We will reflect more on the content and we will review and announce a plan through which we can work together with everyone."

Crayon Pop has issued an official apology for their bank account incident.

The girls and their company received a lot of backlash after opening a bank account specifically for charitable contributions. However, the problem was that the announcement was worded badly, and the original announcement seemed to emphasize the part that the bank account was for gifts instead of the part that the deposits would be donated to charity.

Although Chrome Entertainment had already spoken up about it, the company issued an official statement saying

The reason why we decided not to receive gifts was because the members felt burdened when they received expensive gifts.

We chose a 'donation' method where both the fans and singers could be happy, but we didn't put enough thought into the method or the way we spoke up about it.

Of course, we're thankful for the gifts, but it's also true that we feel sorry. It's burdensome for both the person who gives and the person who receives, and for student fans who aren't financially well off, it could even be bad. And even when the members wear it (gifts), that could create a misunderstanding.

We can't accurately divide the presents between what we can and what we can't receive. We also cannot ignore the effort of our fans, so we had to figure out a solution that would best suit the both of us. We chose a method of donation that everyone could be happy with, but we weren't good in the execution and in the words we chose. We are sorry.

What do you think about all that happened?

Crayon Pop dismissed rumors that they were funded by a chaebol.

Recently, the girls have been swept in rumors (see number 3) that the girls were backed by a chaebol (conglomerate). However, Chrome Entertainment explained, "We heard the rumors, but they are definitely not the truth. We do not receive that kind of funding."

They also responded to rumors that they had a political backing, and said, "That's shocking. Those rumors are unfounded."

i swear every time they come out to say they aren't shady, the shadier the company seems.

the fact that they actually replied to a blind item and often are creeping around online feels so weird.

I can understand the creeping around online and even the ilbe connection precisely because their company seems to be operating on a shoestring budget. I imagine a large portion of their promotional and pr efforts have been centred around social media and it kinda worked for them in finding their niche fans in the past.

But it's obvious they don't have the knowhow to deal with the sudden attention and subsequent scrutiny now.

wow going into the big league is sure tough, no moment of rest for these girls with the bad news~

I feel like the company didn't even finish their thought before they jumped on that one. Refusing ALL fan gifts and then setting up an account? They could have just asked nicely that the fans donate to charity instead of giving them brand stuff and other crap.... *sigh*

Chrome is great until they're asked to act like a mature company.

I work somewhere that does charity fundraising sometimes and we often are given expensive items as donations by companies or by high-profile individuals - they're auctioned at events, usually for much more than they are worth if they have been donated by a famous person, and the money given to the charity.

Everyone wants an ipad now lbr.

But tbh, I think those things can be sold off & the money can be made from them. :/

I know they were trying to do right but...Chrome ent needs to STFU or at least hire an experienced PR person. Crayon Pop don't need this bullshit.

........da fuq? there was literally nothing wrong with that message. I like that they're asking fans to donate ot charity instead of giving useless gifts.

These girls probably live in a dorm the size of a shoebox. Where are they going to put all of your damn cookies and teddy bears?!!?

The original message was that they're asking fans to deposit to the bank account they created. And when it reaches a certain amount, they'll donate it.
Good intention, bad choice of words and execution. They should have just asked fans to donate directly to charities.

I guess I can see why people would feel it awkward....but from an official company, I doubt there's much risk. If the fanclub leader was the one controlling the account, well...that would be shady. Maybe I'm just too trusting XD;

apparently the company will benefit from tax exemptions, etc. by doing this so it's somewhat shady too

They should have just asked fans to donate directly to charity instead of mentioning the bank account. Fan clubs do that all the time.

Chrome please stop making it easy for people to hate on the girls.

Semi OT but I just saw fancams from KCON and they looked like they were having so much fun, I was so happy to read fan accounts of people saying they became fans after seeing them perform ;_;

it seems unfair they wont except ANY gifts, I'm assuming it includes hand made ones. since they're so concerned about fans spending money, what about those fans who MAKE the gift? with this new policy, those fans would be have to spend money in order to show their appreciation.

the intentions are understandable but they didn't think about the fans

Sloppy execution, but people comparing Chrome with CCM are off base. Tons of idols ask their fans to donate to charity instead of giving gifts. There was even an article posted to omona recently about it, where both Korean netizens and commenters here agreed it was a good idea.

EDIT: found the article

http://omonatheydidnt.livejournal.com/11597165.html

While I agree that asking fans to deposit money directly into a company bank account is shady, in principle most of us agreed that South Korea's fan-gift culture is messed up and charity donations are a better way to go.

But I know some Japanese friends who spend thousands of dollars buying gifts for their idol but also they want to make sure the idol gets it. But these girls aren't poor and the actions make them really happy.
