M.pire (엠파이어) is a South-Korean boyband with six members: Taehee (leader, lead vocal), Yooseung (rapper), Haru (sub-vocal), Red (sub-vocal), T.O (main vocal) and Jerry (rapper).
They are managed by Benjamin Entertainment and CMG Chorok Stars.
M.pire is pronounced as ‘empire,’ and it’s a combination of the words ‘music’ and ‘vampire.’ This is to signify the need for music to continue living.

I only added this because
A new group of “music vampires” have emerged as rookies amongst a saturated idol market. Leader Taehee, vocals Haru and T.O, rapper Yooseung, rapper/dancer Jerry and rapper from Chinese origin Red. These six men form M.Pire, a group that debuted the beginning of this month with their first single ‘Carpe Diem.’
Recently our reporter met with this handsome group, who are getting a lot of attention nowadays for their drop dead stunning looks. Despite being a rookie group that debuted barely 10 days before this interview, they oozed confidence all throughout the meeting.
Taehee: “I don’t fully realize yet that we have finally made our debut. When I see fans waiting for us outside our practice room or dorm, little by little it’s starting to sink in. It took three years of training to form into M.Pire, but individually some of the members have been training for up to 5-6 years. Now that we have started promoting as a group, I feel a lot of tension, but also a lot of joy."
M.Pire’s debut song “We can’t be friends” is the work of composer 4Miles, with lyrics by Ddori Janggun. The song tells the story of a man who’s throwing a warning towards an ex-partner that toyed with their heart.
Yooseung: “A couple of months before our debut, we were told we would be performing at Dream Concert at barely a weeks’ notice. We had to practice very hard to perfect the choreography. The song’s recordings weren’t even fully completed yet at that point. Since the performance at Dream Concert, our choreography has still gone through a number of changes for our debut. I was really glad we were able to finish that stage safely."
M.pire’s vampire concept got criticized for being similar to that of fellow boygroup Vixx when they came out with their song ‘On & On’ in January. To this, leader Taehee gave a calm answer.
Taehee: “Our group name M.Pire is a combination of the words ‘music’ and ‘vampire,’ so naturally we got compared to Vixx who also had a vampire concept. But we are confident that our group has a different feel, and we wish to show more of ourselves. We hope in the future we can attend variety shows and make people change their minds about us."
Yooseung: “The song “We can’t be friends” was made over a year and a half ago. The overlapping concepts are purely a coincidence. I think that even though both concepts portray vampires, the stories that are being told in the songs are completely different.”
Haru: “On the other hand, these stories gave us a lot of exposure so I’m grateful for that as well."
Despite coming from different backgrounds, the six members came together sharing the same dream. They’ve been living together for over six months now.
Jerry: “In my case, I lived by myself for quite a while, so the messy dorm life is a big lifestyle change. But I really like it, because I don’t feel so lonely. We don’t drink alcohol, but it often feels like we are guys gathering at a cafe when we are just chatting away and that’s really fun."
Red: “I often miss my family that lives in China, but I really want to be here as well. Living together makes me feel less lonely, and that’s cool."
When asked about ideal types, the members came out with a variety of answers due to having different personalities.
Jerry: “I like small and compact girls. The kind of girl that makes you feel better when you see them. Personally, I like IU. I especially like girls with a pretty smile.”
Taehee: “For me looks don’t matter. As long as our hearts and personalities match each other. If I had to name a celebrity, I would say Miss A’s Suzy."
Yooseung: “I like modern urban women. Someone to eat brunch with in the morning? (laughs)"
Haru: “I don’t look at appearance, I want to have a lover that is like a friend. A good personality is all I need."
T.O: “I like a girl with a pretty smile, someone I can protect and take care of."
Red: “I like a girl with long hair and a funny personality. I often watch MBC’s “We got married,” and I really like Secret’s Han Sunhwa.”
In addition, we asked the members for their role models. Jerry mentioned Big Bang’s Taeyang, Taehee chose JYJ’s Junsu, Haru gets inspired by the determination of the group Shinhwa and Red named Super Junior, a group that also has a big fandom in China.
Yooseung: “Before Big Bang debuted, MTV had a documentary showing how the group was formed. That really sparked my dream to become an artist. As a rapper, I really look up to Big Bang’s T.O.P."
T.O: “B2ST is my role model. We often meet in the same shop and even though we’re rookies, they always smile at us and greet us. I especially like member Yang Yoseob. I really hope that in the future, we as a group can also maintain that same attitude."
M.Pire’s strong series of debut stages set the tone for a promising career that’s developing at a fast pace. It’s no surprise that M.Pire’s biggest wish is to grab a newcomer award at the end of the year. With the handsome and skilled members that M.Pire possesses, they’re a group that definitely won’t escape from the public eye any time soon.
Taehee: “Vampires have to drink human blood in order to live a long life. Just like that, M.Pire needs the public’s cheers in order to stay alive. We will continue to release fresh music for a long time, and we hope everyone will cheer for us.”
