b.a.p, “we’re more curious about ufos than girl groups”

What could be the biggest interest of the idol group, B.A.P (Bang Yongguk, Himchan, Daehyun, Youngjae, Jongup, Zelo), who have come back with their third mini album ‘BADMAN’.

At the recently held interview, a question that was just thrown out there nonchalantly received an unexpected answer. B.A.P’s biggest interest is not girl group members or fashion, but ‘UFOs’. Although I exploded in laughter, I decided to listen to the end.

Youngjae, who opened his mouth first, showed quite a serious expression and said, “Whenever we meet, we always talk about weird things. I think we have a lot of random thoughts like from ‘Do you think UFOs really exist’ to ‘How can we take over the world’.

Himchan who heard this, raised his voice and excitedly said, "But on a planet that isn’t Earth, there’s a world that’s much better than our current world, and the aliens there come to Earth occasionally to check on Earth’s development. They said that the thing the aliens ride over here is called a UFO.”

Youngjae drove a wedge between Himchan’s ridiculous point. He tilted his head and said, “I recently saw a video where a secretary of the Canadian Ministry of National Defence stated that there was a UFO. I’m really curious as to what evidence they used to prove that.”

To this, their leader, Bang Yongguk, laughed and added, “Our members have a lot of curiosity. If a strange topic is brought up one day, we endlessly talk about that topic and don’t feel satisfied until we find documents or movies relating to that subject. A member recently said that he kept hearing a beeping noise before sleeping, so we laid on the bed and tried to feel the sound.”

Although the youngest, Zelo, is in his 2nd year of high school, the oldest hyungs, Bang Yongguk and Himchan, are healthy young men at the age of 24. The age where they should be interested in dating as well. To this, Yongguk said, “Although there are times when we want to date, I think it’s realistically difficult because we’re at at time where B.A.P is really important. Also, when I’m with the members like this, I don’t have thoughts like that often. I think it’s more fun to play with my friends or the members.”

Besides this, the members brought up strange questions that they had normally such as ‘Why do scissor-locks happen’, ‘What are those strange dots you see when you close your eyes’, causing my laughter to not cease from start to end.

While looking at the eyes of the B.A.P members quickly go bright at topics like these, it felt like I was watching boys that appear in fantasy movies. Like the main character who is innocent, but has a lot of curiosity about the world, and will one day end up being the world’s hero.

B.A.P, who has the dream of taking over the Earth, revealed their third mini album, ‘BADMAN’ on the 6th at 12 PM. Including their triple title songs, ‘BADMAN’, ‘Coffee Shop’, and ‘Hurricane’, there are a total of six songs.

'BADMAN', which will be the song that's mainly promoted, has a melody and lyrics with an alert about the many crimes that exist in the world,along with B.A.P's performance that fights in the name of justice towards wrong doings.

The group, B.A.P, revealed episodes about their performances and music video recordings in America.

B.A.P revealed many events that happened while they were in the U.S during a recent interview held at Asia Today’s office.

While holding their Pacific tour in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, and New York, they were also filming music videos for their title songs, ‘Coffee Shop’ and ‘Hurricane’. Continuing from this, they filmed their music videos for ‘Hurricane’ and ‘BADMAN’ in Las Vegas and Detroit.

The members started out by talking about the troubles they had with the food that didn’t fit their tastes. Although the members were all happy at first to eat hamburgers as a daily meal which didn’t happen often in Korea, they got tired of that lifestyle for half a month and thought they couldn’t eat any more.

Daehyun revealed, “We had a lot of anticipation because we heard there were famous hamburgers for each city. From San Francisco’s ‘In-and-Out’ burger to New york’s ‘Shake Shack’ burger, they were all very tasty. However, after a couple of days passed, it was to the point where we would get heartburn just from hearing hamburgers or pizza. Jongup was the only one who continuously wanted hamburgers.”

To this, Jongup showed a proud expression and said, “Because I usually like hamburgers, I had no problem with this. If someone told me to keep eating hamburgers for a couple of months, I think I could.”

There was a story behind their music video filming that caused confusion.

Zelo explained, "We filmed the music video for ‘Hurricane’ at a street in Las Vegas, but suddenly a random Western woman came in and danced with us. As the director yelled ‘cut’, she actually seemed surprised and asked what the problem was. Turns out, that person thought we were just dancing and playing with our music turned on, and wanted to join in.”

Himchan added, “For ‘Hurricane’, the choreography wasn’t pre-planned, and it was just filmed with the members having fun at the scene. Also, I think that kind of misunderstanding was formed because we were near a casino.”

Meanwhile, Detroit, the music video location for ‘BADMAN’, gave a chilling experience to B.A.P. At the location that was set for their music video filming, there was a corpse found a day before the members came. It’s also known that Detroit is a city with the highest crime rate in America.

The members reminisced their memories by saying, “Since Detroit is a bankrupt city, there are a lot of abandoned buildings, but not a lot of people. The building that we filmed at had bullet marks and turf fight remains from the gangs of that location, so it was scary and fascinating. It was a completely different feel from the sets created in Korea. Thankfully, we were able to do the filming safely because there were people protecting us.”

Meanwhile, B.A.P are currently having active promotions after releasing their mini album, ‘BADMAN’, on the 6th.

Q1. From what I’ve seen, you guys are rookies with the strongest stamina. Promotions without any rest, shouldn’t you be tired by now?

Himchan: A lot of people say that, but since we’re having fun promoting, we don’t think like that. We actually ask for more concerts to be held.

Reporter: But that won’t work if your body doesn’t follow along.

Youngjae: When we’re able to sleep, we try to sleep as much as we can. We also eat our meals really well.

Himchan: The meal costs are really a lot…

Q2. Do you guys have an plans on turning all the members’ hair colors to blonde again?

Youngjae: Since we’ve already shown it twice, we’re not going to do it in case it gets boring. Although, we’re not afraid to do it.

Reporter: It seems like Zelo never had his hair black.

Zelo: I’ve never done it specifically, but there was a time where I painted it for a campaign event. To a very artificial way. There are still many colors I haven’t tried out yet. Although I want to try out many styles, I’ll go with the concept selected for now.

Q3. You held your Pacific tour, but which member has the most popularity overseas?

Daehyun: Our youngest, Zelo, seems to be popular no matter where we go.

Zelo: Everyone picks me, but I think that they see me in a cute way because I’m trying to express a strong concept at a young age, seeing as how I’m the youngest. (In a quiet voice) But rather than say that I have the most popularity, I think… everyone… has theirs individually… I don’t really know about whether or not I’m popular…

TS Rep: This is Zelo’s charm

Q4. Starting from the 17th, you guys are holding your encore concert. Zelo cried a lot during the first concert, so do you think you’ll cry again this time?

Zelo: (Straight face) No.

TS Rep: We don’t know what the situation will be like at that time. Haha

Himchan: I want to exclude all of that and try to possibly just show our cool sides. Like ‘while going on the Pacific tour, we grew like this’.

Q5. If you were to pick a person who changed the most during the 1 year and 6 months since debuting.

Daehyun: For me, it’d be Youngjae. As you can see, he lost a lot of weight and got more good-looking than from his ‘Warrior’ and ‘Power’ days. He’s an upcoming ace.

Yongguk: In a bad meaning, it’d be me. Compared to now, I looked very young when I debuted, but I wanted to escape an idol-like image, so I purposely cut a lot of my hair. I think it was a bit of a negative change.

Q6. A member that you think is the perfect idol?

All the members: Zelo.

Reporter: I can’t really tell because he’s quiet right now.

Daehyun: He’ll show his skills on stage.

Reporter: Since he’s the youngest, he probably has a lot of aegyo (cute acts)?

Daehyun: Himchan hyung has a lot of aegyo.

Reporter: I heard. They say that you do it really well to noonas?

Himchan: Because I grew up under my noona, it seems a bit so. But I do it a lot to my sister as well. Haha.

Zelo: Rather than think that I did well up till now, I just did whatever I felt like, maybe because I was young.

Youngjae: A singer is the happiest when they’re on stage, right? But for Zelo, it may be because he’s still young, but he’s truthful. When he’s on stage, I think he’s able to express those emotions well.

Zelo: (Bows his head towards Youngjae) Thank you.

Reporter: Do you two normally talk formally with each other?

Himchan: Our team usually uses formal talk. But talking formally and playing around are different.

Reporter: Seems like the youngest, Zelo, would have a hard time.

Zelo: I’m okay. It doesn’t bother me at all.

Q7. Which member are you the most envious of?

Youngjae: I’m very envious of Zelo’s height and age.

Daehyun: Zelo’s skin tone. The members got tanned this time, so our skin tones have gotten darker, but I’ve been pretty dark since before.

Himchan: Yongguk’s nature. Because I always want to play around and have a heart of a jokester, I feel like I learn about actions that a hyung should do from Yongguk even if I’m a hyung myself.

Q8. What does B.A.P think their entrance is?

All members: Entrance? What’s an entrance?

Daehyun: The way of becoming a fan?

Reporter: There’s this thing called an entrance and exit. It’s like asking what kind of points of B.A.P will fans fall for.

Himchan: Ah~ Like fans entering? How they start to like us? That’s our characteristics. All 6 of our characteristics are really different. You may think that they may not work well together, but I think they somehow create a good combination. Honestly, it may look all the same when you watch our stage, but once you realize it, you’ll be able to feel each of the separate charms strongly. (Suddenly changed to a non-confident tone) But I… I don’t really know since I’m not a fan. Haha.

Daehyun: I think they like us after seeing our music. It’s fierce and strong. There are a lot of messages about society as well. Also, I think they like Himchan hyung’s cute side as well.

Himchan: Daehyun is the Busan Wonbin.

Daehyun: Hyung is Korea’s Brad Pitt.

Youngjae: I believe that our entrance is Busan Wonbin and Korea’s Brad Pitt.

Reporter: From what I heard, the ‘quiet Daehyun, suddenly talks a lot’.

Daehyun: I think that’s right. I normally talk a lot, but the company didn’t allow me to.

Himchan: Haha. He admitted it.

Daehyun: But due to that, I could feel that the fans liked it. I didn’t realize it at first, but the moment I talked, it all fell down. I felt that.

Himchan: I’m the type that’s image is wrecked once I open my mouth. Did you say it hasn’t cracked yet? Okay, then up till here.

Q9. Although you’re strong with reality shows, it seems to be hard to find you on public broadcast station variety shows. Aren’t there any variety shows that you have a greed for?

Himchan: Zelo and I are going on ‘Quiz to Change the World’ soon, but it’s really difficult because I go through a mental burden a few days prior to it. I think variety shows are very hard. I’m fine if it’s just between us, but I feel burdened and awkward when other people are there.

Reporter: But isn’t there at least one member that’s good at variety shows? Or is everyone the same?

Daehyun: If it’s just among us, I want to do something like ‘Killing Camp’. Should I say it’s like a synergy effect when it’s just us, but our true sides come out and I think it’s a bit more fun.

Q10. Alright. Last question. At this moment, what’s the most important thing to B.A.P?

Himchan: Right now? That would be the members. If one person was to not be here right now, then B.A.P wouldn’t be here. Also, I think our lives in the future are the most important as well.

Yongguk: Time. I think every minute and second that we’re together is really important. There are so many things we could do if we didn’t have to sleep, but some person had to go and create sleep… The time that’s wasted during sleep is really regretful for me. Because I normally have those thoughts, I’m usually unable to sleep.

Himchan: Due to our comeback preparations, we probably slept 2~3 hours per day.

Zelo: For me, it’s the hyungs. Maybe it’s because there was a time where Himchan got hurt, but I could feel more strongly that the hyungs are important.

Jongup: To me, this very moment is important.

Other members: Oh~

Jongup: This very moment where we draw out our future is the most important. I’m also trying to do my best at every moment.

Youngjae: For me, it’s enjoyment. Choreography practice is something that’s really tiring, but I laugh a lot. I can do practice effectively. I think there’s a synergy effect whenever I’m happy. While living your life, a person could be tired or exhausted, but I hope that among those days, you have a larger portion of enjoyable days. Also, that time is the most important as well.

Himchan: You have to smile to be able to live long.

Daehyun: For me, it’s the fans. Hahaha. There always has to be at least one person that’s like this, right? Because there are our fans, we’re able to work harder and put in more effort.

Yongguk: I think all the things that we said are important can be found in our fans. Because there are our fans, the members are together, we’re able to practice together, and can enjoy it as well.

Although there were many idol groups who set foot towards the music industry, only a few survived. Among that, the growth of B.A.P (Bang Yongguk Himchan Daehyun Youngjae Jongup Zelo) definitely stands out. They, who endlessly ran forwards without time to rest since debuting in January 2012, successfully finished their Pacific tour that included 4 U.S cities and 4 Asian countries.

And then their third album that was created with heart and soul, ‘BADMAN’, is a step taken in order to show the unique colors that B.A.P has.

B.A.P, who doesn’t forget to add in messages about this generation and the youth that live in this generation for every song they reveal, have gotten more fierce in ‘BADMAN’. B.A.P who have become a ‘BADMAN’ in order to bring justice to a society that is being corrupted with fear and worries, promised to show an upgraded performance.

"The masculine sides we have shown till now have been placed into ‘BADMAN’. I believe it to be a song that fits well with our style." (Youngjae)

"Different from ‘Warrior’ and ‘Power’, it has a trendy feel to it. The message is also detailed. We decided that we’d be able to capture the public." (Zelo)

"It’s a song where you can see the current us as well as the future." (Himchan)

"The absence period this time around was the longest, and the members participated in the album from start to finish, practiced, and put an effort for a long time, so I have that much confidence."

The ‘BADMAN’ music video was filmed at Detroit, which is the top for crimes in America. It was a choice to emphasize the song’s feeling.

"Half of the buildings in the city were abandoned ones, so it was a bit scary. Although it’s a dangerous place, we finished filming safely. It gave off a feeling of a ‘dead city’."

B.A.P is receiving explosive support from the company. After the girl group, Secret, they are receiving a lot of anticipation from many people, so the members feel responsibility towards that as well.

"I think even the company has a greed to create a cool group. While being thankful towards that, we put an effort it trying to make it happen." (Jongup)

"There’s really no other thoughts than to do my best. I try to do my best during every moment." (Daehyun)

The members’ strong determination came with good results. B.A.P has a sturdy enough fandom to open solo concerts in Korea as well as overseas. What could their secret be.

"Instead of appearing on variety shows, we made a lot of stages where we could see our fans up close. As we constantly showed live stages, our abilities improved as well. I think a lot of people like that side of us." (Himchan)

"I don’t think there was a group that had a concept like us when we debuted. So that’s what I think they like." (Daehyun)

Their leader, Bang Yongguk, has a heavy importance to the point where he could be called B.A.P’s pillar. The path that B.A.P points towards was also influenced a lot by Bang Yongguk.

"I’m always thankful because the younger members all follow me well. Because we live together and have been stuck together for a long time, a lot of our thoughts and actions have similar points, so it feels like the six of us are one family.” (Bang Yongguk)

The definite characteristics are not only shown in Bang Yongguk, but the other members as well. Their youngest, Zelo, is B.A.P’s top cutie that not only receives the fans’ love, but all of the members’ love as well. When asked what he wants to do if given his first vacation since debuting, Zelo hesitated before innocently answering, “I want to go play at a place like a water park with the members,” creating a good-feeling laughter from everyone.

"Although I show a lot of affection towards our fans at a public place, I feel like I can’t follow up on Zelo no matter how much I express it. If I see him as this cute, think about how cute he would be in our fans’ eyes." (Himchan)

B.A.P aims to be an artist-like idol that doesn’t lack in performances or musical abilities. The members, who all gathered through the similar point of music, dream of a more improved future for B.A.P. If there are people who aren’t able to see their full potential because they’re stuck in the mould of an idol, it would definitely be something regrettable.

"B.A.P is a group that was created with the idea that we would create everything ourselves for any area. Although that idea may be far off, I believe we’re in the process of learning. Even if we’re trapped inside the prejudiced ideas of what people view idols to be, I feel like that’s something we need to bring forth with us as well." (Bang Yongguk)

"I’m working hard with the thought that skills are the most important. It’s a happy thing for me because I’m doing something I want to do while enjoying it." (Jongup)

"I want to gain the ability to transform expressions I think of into music. Because a person who takes their thoughts and expresses it through music is a musician." (Youngjae)

"Because we’re idols, our actions can create a large influence. If we were to create music with our beliefs with one mind, then I believe we could use that to send our message to many more people." (Himchan)

"Whether it’s an idol or musician, the similarity is that they both do music. Since I’m doing this because I like music, I try not to care about what way they look at me from. If I keep challenging myself and try hard, I’ll be able to reach the area I want to be at, right?" (Daehyun)

"Like the hyungs said, wouldn’t we be able to rise up to a high point while we enjoy this? That high point isn’t the success of popularity or financially, but it’s the point we reach once we achieve all the goals that we truly want." (Zelo)

Lol. I can't believe they would actually eat hamburgers daily. In-N-Out is good but not everyday. Since they were in SoCal they should have tried some Cal-Mex food. I am sure they would have enjoyed it.

I am glad that the reporter brought up the point about their bodies not catching up to them. I appreciate how they always answer that they are not tired and that they enjoy promoting but I really wish they would actually worry about themselves for once.

I worry for Zelo's scalp. Kid has been blonde since their debut with the exception of One Shot and I don't want him to bald prematurely.

Daehyun your skin tone is fine, you shouldn't be envious of Zelo's. I need to give both him and Kai a talk and a hug.

They are indeed funnier when they are by themselves than with other people. They are super awkward on variety shows when they actually have to interact with other people.

Lol I would love to be a fly on the wall when they discuss dumb stuff like UFOs. And I would like to see a cut of that lady dancing with them.

I know they say they love promoting and performing but they looked really tired at the LOE SG presscon and to fly back the same day and attend music bank the next...I don't think any love of music and meeting the fans would give me the energy to do that.

Wow, Zelo is maturing up nicely but I think he still has his childish side to him. Hpefully they will get a Holiday one day where they can actually go to a water park with the members.
They definitely seem more awkward with others on variety. I wish they would do something like Killing Camp again. I don't think they will rest cause they are gonna prepare for their Japanese Debut! ;____;
