Already this year alone, Gu Hye-sun has been busy as an actress (Boys Before Flowers), writer (Tango), artist (also called Tango), and director (The Madonna). Now she’s putting on yet another hat as she begins working on recording her own album, which she hopes to put out by fall.

Gu Hye-sun is immersing herself in the work of putting together a new-age album, which includes the efforts of some of her fellow YG musicians (Song Baek-kyung, Oh Jin-hwan) as well as Tablo. She had initially wanted to put out the album in the first half of the year, but plans were pushed back due to her art show.

A rep from her side explained that the album will likely contain some songs featuring piano that Gu has written, as well as others that she wrote lyrics to and will sing herself.

I was wondering why Gu Hye-sun seems to inspire such a heated response from both extremes, and I don’t think it’s because she’s merely trying new things. Rather, it’s that she’s flitting from one thing to another the moment one is done. All of her projects have become famous because of her fame as an actress, not because of her work itself, and that makes the quality of work irrelevant to its success. (I’m not saying it’s bad; I’m saying it’s not a factor in its fame.) Then, the moment it’s done, she’s off to the next thing. If she spent more time with each interest, she might seem less of a dilettante and gain more credibility as Artist Gu Hye-sun, Novelist Gu Hye-sun, and so on.

LOL. So? There are shit load of idols out there that can't sing but they are still doing it. xD

Yeah, I know. I was just a little amused because I remember there being e post about her almost being in a YG girl group. I think she said something about it being a good idea that they didn't go along with it since she can't sing. It's just funny, to me. I'm not trying to attack her or anything.

Other than that, I think it's cool that she's trying out all of these different things.

Oh, I understand what you meant and I didn't mean anything by it. Haha, actually I think she was being modest. She's a decent singer. :3

But the article says she is going to do "new age" which means it will probably have an electro feel and everything will be autotuned/vocodered so it doesn't matter what her raw voice sounds like.

I don't see the issue. I think she's testing the waters of different crafts in order to find her niche; trying to find the place that's most comfortable for her. I actually commend her for doing so.

I think she should have stick to composing and writing lyrics and leave singing for other YG artists, because she really cannot sing:

I think she's just testing the waters, so why not? She's really popular now so she'll also profit from it financially as well. But if she keeps doing it then she's spreading herself too thin.

lol.. why can't she just decide for one thing to do.. she's doing too many different things IMO. i can't realy take it seriuosly..
i thought her art was really great. but as an actress i didn't like her (baically because i found Jandi annoying..lol)

She should stick to writing, acting, painting, directing and composing because she really can't sing. I love her but forreal...even she said she can't sing lol.

Also, my incredible bias toward anything Baekkyoung and Jinhwan will probably render my opinion of her singing useless, if her album includes those two (and Tablo!) in it.

Well, she's probably going to sell well because of BOF.

Either way, dnw. She stick to being an artist. Her paintings/drawings are nice.

Even if her popularity and the coverage of her talents is mostly because she's an actress I gotta give her credit. You gotta take advantage of what you got and the fact that people will report on whatever she's doing is good for her. Plus it's cool she's breaking out of the norm and trying to many different things.

Date: 2009-08-01 12:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aurait.livejournal.com
Eh, I find her tedious. But I think she inspires extreme response because these projects aren't really about her exploring her artistic potential, if you think about it. They're about exposure. You can "explore" different arts to find your calling without a huge publicity junket to accompany it. I mean, at the end of the day, she can do what she wants, but what she represents is a consumer-culture driven media system (in late capitalist economies in general, I don't mean Korea specifically) that values celebrity over the quality of work. I mean, people dislike her for the same reasons they dislike the fact that Lauren Conrad's book made the NYT bestseller list: because let's be honest, she's really just not that good, and it reminds us that what sells doesn't correlate to the quality of work, for better or worse.
