BEAST’s Son Dong-woon: Then vs. Now
2013-07-26 10:55 pm
The most memorable moment of BEAST’s comeback press conference held on Sunday was when every member of the group praised Son Dong-woon on how much he has grown as an artist. And it is to an extent that Yong Jun-hyung, who produced their latest album, said, “I wanted to take Yo-seop’s main vocalist parts away from him and give them to Dong-woon.” Son Dong-woon stands out among his bandmates as the tallest member of the group. He is also handsome, with distinct facial features and thick double eyelids. But there was a time he didn’t play an active role in neither his group nor the Korean entertainment scene while other members of his group only solidified their presence through individual activities such as releasing solo albums or acting. Yet now he has definite presence in his group, taking on the meaty parts of their songs. TenAsia took a look at his growth as an artist from the moment he debuted until now.

# 2009 / “Bad Girl” from 1st EP
Let’s take a look at BEAST’s performance for their debut song “Bad Girl.” While everyone looks young and fresh, Son Dong-woon is nowhere to be seen. It turns out he’s the guy whose trademark double eyelids have been covered by his long and thick hair. And he only sang two parts through which it was hard to tell how well he sings, let alone who he is. He was also inexperienced with looking at the camera and holding the mic so it was close to impossible for him to have any presence.

# 2010 / “Shock” from 2nd EP
Other than main vocalist Yang Yo-seop and rapper Yong Jun-hyung, Lee Gi-kwang and Jang Hyun-seung, and Yun Du-jun and Son Dong-woon partnered up for different parts of “Shock” to show a definite beginning, development, turn, and conclusion to their performance. But Son Dong-woon and Yoon Du-jun were in the introductory parts to the song’s verses so again, it was hard to tell his vocal ability. Plus he had the shortest part and still seemed to lack confidence. However, his singing became more stable compared to “Bad Girl.” This is when Son Dong-woon started revealing his potential. Plus he got his bangs cut shorter!

# 2010 / “Beautiful” from 4th EP
Maybe it was because he finally revealed his good looks by raising his bangs. Or because he wore a leather jacket with fur on the arms like a gorilla. But this is when Son Dong-woon became more confident and at ease on stage. Yet he still had no presence when it came to the song itself, partnering with Yang Yo-seop for his brief parts. However, he sang well although his part was at a much more difficult key and a lot of the tension disappeared from his expressions and movement.

Son Dong-woon during a performance of “Fiction.” [MBC]
# 2011 / “Fiction” from 1st studio album
This is when Son Dong-woon started to blossom. “Fiction” was a starting point for him because he got to sing part of the chorus, which is only given to the main vocalist or if you have stable live singing skills. Good singing skills was even more crucial to “Fiction” which had a melody that made the singer’s voice stand out. Of course, main vocalist Yang Yo-seop sang most of the chorus and Son Dong-woon only got to sing his first part two minutes into the song, but he added to the song’s level of completion by singing in falsetto for Yong Jun-hyung’s rap part as well. If anything, this showed that his presence in the group had grown along with his singing skills.

Son Dong-woon during a performance of “Shadow.” [Mnet]
# 2013 / “Will You Be Alright?” “I’m Sorry,” and “Shadow” from 2nd studio album
Two voices in particular stand out in songs “Will You Be Alright?” and “I’m Sorry” that were pre-released from the album, and they are the voices of none other than Son Dong-woon who is singing the chorus of the two tunes with Yang Yo-seop. If it seemed like Son Dong-woon sang the ‘leftover’ part of the chorus for “Fiction,” he secured real parts for himself this time. Son Dong-woon, who is solidifying his position by showing his potential, has shown he now has singing skills that may even be good enough for Yang Yo-seop’s parts. And maybe it was because of his experience with musical “Catch Me If You Can” but he can now pull off ballad tunes with a much more stable voice. BEAST is becoming more strong and complete with the growth of their youngest member Son Dong-woon.

1. [+674, -27] He hasn't gotten his name out there as much as the other members have but he has great manners. His hyungs are only a year or two older than him but he speaks formally to them and writes up a lot of respectable posts on Twitter.
2. [+562, -26] I really feel that he's improved a lot. In the Cloud was daebak at the concert.
3. [+549, -26] I heard that he was burned by a firework while doing fan service... and I was really touched when he said that it's an honor to be hurt while on stage ㅠ
4. [+494, -20] I thought a B2UTY wrote this article for a second ㅋㅋㅋ Please write more articles like this~ I'd like more people to learn about Dongwoon~~
5. [+426, -17] Compared to their debut, I think fans will say that Dongwoon is the member who improved himself the most. Dongwoon's climbing up so fast!
6. [+418, -14] Maknae Son God... even if he's not as well known as the other members, he consistently works so hard. FIghting!

Date: 2013-07-26 09:39 pm (UTC)He was one of my favourite when I discovered Beast, so I kept on wishing he would improve and get decent lines. Look at him now, sharing the chorus with the main vocalist, pulling off ad-libs and falsettos! I was so proud and happy when he did his long note in Soom live for the very first time. Sure, he still needs to improve in stability and other things, but he really has come a long way.

Date: 2013-07-26 11:34 pm (UTC)I was okay with the other members at first because I remember back during their reality show and debut when his friends talked about his Hyungs working hard while he just goes to school and he was like, "They told me they will take of it amd to go to classes"
You are doing so well sweetie
