2PM‘s Nichkhun and miss A‘s Jia have been cast in an upcoming Chinese/Korean production drama.

Nichkhun and Jia’s upcoming 30-episode drama is called “Yi You Er Fen Zhi Yi De Xia Tian” (English title “One and a Half Summer“) and will be a young adult drama about campus life. The production will start on July 15 in Xiamen, China.

Nichkhun will play a Chinese American who travels to China to study abroad and to find the girl that he loves. The drama will be set in a beautiful college campus and will draw out the stories of the young students in a fun and romantic way.

“Yi You Er Fen Zhi Yi De Xia Tian” will air next summer.

But seriously though, can Nichkhun do mandarin?

*Edit: oops. so he's a Chinese American eh. It would still be slightly strange if he spoke only English throughout a chinese drama. I guess they can always dub over.

I thought he's Thai? (with some Chinese ethnicity..... but that doesn't guarantee he can speak Chinese)

Yup he is Thai. I meant the character he will play.

They will probably dub over him. They do that with most people who don't speak Chinese or 'standardized' Mandarin (i.e. Taiwanese stars who are in Chinese dramas usually get dubbed over even though they speak Mandarin)

is this going to be like Victoria's drama? where someone dubbed her voice? that was a total turn off

Wy dis they dub over her. Isnt she chinese?

From: [identity profile] rennehollic.livejournal.com
I still wonder
the voice that dubbed Victoria's was annoyingly sweet
but in the first ep they just let her voice be...so idk

Why is dubbing rampant in chinese/taiwanese dramas? Wu chun was dubbed over during his first drama with ariel lin too.
I mean, if they cast someone, wouldn't they want to cast someone who can deliver?

what annoys me the most is that the voice had nothing to do with the Vic and when vic's character giggled, the dubb was so freaking fake I wanted to punch someone.
if it wasn't for the poorly dubbed drama, I would've loved it because Zhoumi and Vic were too cute

Watched the first minute and it seems like EVERYONE was dubbed over. The sound quality of this drama seems terrible.

it is terrible
which is a shame. I wanted to like it so much for Zhoumi. he's too precious

I heard it's really cute too. But i can't go through an entire drama with THAT sound quality

I tried and yes, it's painful

wuchun was subbed because back then he didn't know how to speak mandarin.

and for some reason subbing happens a lot in mainland dramas, even tho it is a full chinese cast.

Oh riiiight i forgot he was from brunei.

Dubbing is common in Chinese dramas because they want to have a normalized dialect. Sometimes people from other regions can't understand another area's dialect so TV producers choose dubbing (ie. Standard mandarin) so everyone can understand what is being said.

Date: 2013-07-13 01:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hearttaek.livejournal.com
Oh so when they film, the actors use their own dialect?
That's totally new to me. Back In the philippines actors would use the standard dialect even though they're from different regions. And here in the US, actors have language coaches if they were to portray a character with a certain accent or whatnot.

Date: 2013-07-13 07:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cuizy.livejournal.com
No I think the actors do use mandarin.... Maybe she means there's slight accents?

I also don't know why they dub..... maybe the mic quality is bad during filming? Or just they don't trust the actors voices to portray what the director wants?? Orz

From: [identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com
I wonder about this too? Like I think they do it because the sound on set isn't good, but I find it really distracting. Some actors and actresses over dub themselves, but some don't.

hopefully, if there's a dubb, it will be done properly, because in Victoria's drama case, it was horrible

Will he learn Mandarin at all for this role or does he know some as part of his previous training? I don't think he can survive a whole role just in English.

Date: 2013-07-12 07:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scarletapples.livejournal.com
He was required to learn Korean and Mandarin during training. I would think his Mandarin would be very basic, however.

And well, if he runs into problems, he can just go to Jia anyways for help I guess?

lol for one to act in a chinese/taiwanese drama you don't need to know how to speak the language.

Date: 2013-07-13 07:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cuizy.livejournal.com
Yeah.... There was a Thai guy who was super popular in china and he acted in Chinese movies without speaking Chinese.....

Also since Nickhun is portraying Chinese American, it's ok if he doesn't really speak Chinese. Pretty accurately describes a lot of the Chinese Americans around me.

Ah, it's so far away... Next summer!?

Seems like Nichkhun is trying hard... maybe? Jia said on her weibo that he keeps on saying the word for milk instead of grandma, lol. Good luck to them both either way!

Hooray! I love it when I get a chance to use my Mandarin. Not a huge fan of Nichkhun, but it'll do. Isn't he ethnically Chinese? I know he's from Thailand but I think he has Han Chinese ancestry. He looks like it, anyways.

Also, if his acting is anything like it was in that pre-debut audition, I will watch the shit out of this drama. And I will lick it up for seven years like a dog or whatever the hell he was blubbering about.

oops, didn't reply correctly. trying again

Hmmmm..... The only problem I have with the premise is the whole Chinese American = exotic and romantic thing.....

But then again this will probably be for the young girls and brain dead plot wise.... Kinda like Victoria's drama.

love 2pm <3
