Ok, clearly there's no incest, but at least the hammer scene is there. I mean, there's no way they could get away with not including it. movie is still gonna suck, tho. Doesn't seem as gritty as the original, but eh, it's hollywood.
Yeah, they gave away the fact that they changed the original ending by showing the main character his grown up daughter on TV...wonder how they're going to end it.
The reason the original Oldboy is so revered and so beloved with film lovers is that it transcends the tradition storytelling we are so used to, where everything is neat and clean. Old, rather, returns to the dark roots of storytelling--of how the fall of a hero is caused by his hubris. It is full of beautiful poetics, art, and that hunger for human interaction that made Oh Dae-su such a pitying man.
This film will be nothing more than a pale imitation and will miss all of the truly important themes of the original. I really don't understand why Park Chan-wook let them do this.
They would have done a better job at remaking Lady Vengeance, imo.
Looks a bit too violent for me (so the original will probably be even more so?), but wow, Elizabeth Olsen looks young enough to play Josh Brolin's daughter.
I actually have been curious to see how bad the My Sassy Girl remake is, but I haven't been able to find a place to watch it and I'm not going to pay money for it, sooo...
I will say this: if I had NO knowledge of the original, I would say this trailer looks awesome!
so if we approach this movie with no expectations, it should be good. But I'm a die hard fan of the Korean Oldboy, so this hurts my heart a little bit. :o
for the first minute or so of this trailer it wasn't as bad as I was expecting but the rest looks very Hollywood-ified (which is what we can expect from subtitle-phobes I guess). it may sound weird to say considering the twist and the violence of the original, but I felt it was still a very subtle movie. still not interested in this one :(
I am looking forward to it. I have never seen the original. I try to keep an open mind about remakes. I can't really pass judgment on it yet since I haven't seen either yet
