Rival rock festivals begin today
2009-07-25 11:54 pmMusic fans face a dilemma this weekend as they choose between two rock festivals. Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival returns for a fourth straight year, albeit with a credit crunch line-up heavily reliant on Korean bands. Newcomer Jisan Valley Rock Festival has big names, but almost twice the admission price.
What many of the bands this year have in common is that they are old hands - very few of this year's imports broke through in the last five years, and many have been established for more than a decade.

This might be good for Jisan, which as a festival has no experience at all. Their biggest name is Sunday's headliner Oasis, who will be making their second visit this year after playing at the Olympic Gymnasium in April. Headliners on Friday are rock bond Weezer, while garage act Basement Jaxx, themselves no strangers to Korea, will head the bill Saturday.
They will be accompanied by a host of high profile acts, notably legendary singer Patti Smith. Others are Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Crying Nut and Jet.
The second stage at Jisan also has some interesting acts. Brit rockers Starsailor headline Friday, while Yozo and then Priscilla Ahn play Sunday.
Pentaport's main headliner is long-time hard rock act The Deftones who head the stage Saturday. They will be getting support from punk stalwarts No Brain, who head line Friday, and Buhwal, who lead the stage Sunday.
Further down the bill a smattering of foreign acts, including French funksters The Inspector Cluzo and Japanese indie group Acidman, will be joining the Hongdae scene's best and brightest. The second stage features Aussie singer Lenka, beatbox legend Killa Kela and Korean crossover act W&Whale.
It is a much toned down affair from last year - when Underworld, Travis and Kasabian featured in a much more high-profile line up - perhaps due to a split with co-promoters Yellow9. However, the festival benefits from easier access than Jisan, and 4 years experience means that much of the teething problems are likely to have been resolved.
Jisan, by contrast, is a long way from the convenience of the Seoul subway system, and as a brand new festival it's hard to know what to expect.
Jisan Valley Rock Festival takes place at Jisan Resort, near Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. Day tickets are 88,000 won, two day passes 132,000 won and three day passes 165,000 won. Camping is not available for day tickets. For more information visit www.valleyrockfestival.com.
Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival is at Songdo Resort near Dong Incheon Station on subway line 1 and Dongchun Station on Incheon line 1. Day tickets are 50,000 won, two day tickets 70,000 won and three day passes 90,000 won. For more information visit www.pentaportrock.com.
