“I think my roots will always be hip-hop” – Interview with Star News Part 2 (June 4, 2013)

tumblr_mnibxa1Ura1rne5e3o2_500

- Read Part 1 here -

Billboard praised CL by comparing you to famous female rapper, Nicki Minaj.

I’m very thankful. When making music or shooting music videos, I feel really good when people in South Korea as well as everywhere else in the world likes it. I hope that people would like more variety.

Your appearance of playing with freedom on stage is impressive, but I’m curious as to how you play privately..

While I seem to play well at clubs, and drink well too, actually I don’t really know how to play well. Rather than going to and meeting lots of people, music is the most fun to me. When it comes to relaxing, I love learning how to cook best. I think of cooking as a form of art too. Having to create something out of the materials that I like within 2 hours. The members too, I’ve given them food and they told me that it was delicious.(Laughs) I hope I’ll be at a level where I can make food for my husband to eat in the future.

It’s rather surprising that you like cooking.

Usually I try very hard to separate CL and Chaerin. When I’m meeting family and friends I just want to be Chaerin. I seem to be able to show an energetic figure on stage due to the strength that I receive from so many people (in the audience). The emotions that I feel when I listen to music alone also accumulate and I’d want to show them to everyone as soon as I can. When I’m on stage I’m CL, but I’d like it if people would see me as Chaerin when they’re looking at me (personally).

2NE1 is also in the midst of preparing for a comeback?

I’m really happy to be able to show everyone my music and 2NE1′s music too. I’m so happy thinking of how to show everyone a better side that I can’t sleep. I think 2NE1′s music will be very different from ‘The Baddest Female’. I think it will be something very 2NE1. I’m sorry I can’t tell you much about it right now.

G-Dragon and Taeyang appeared in the MV for ‘The Baddest Female’

In addition to Jiyong oppa and Taeyang oppa, many others also came to help. Everyone came to work but it was like coming to play instead (Laughs). They didn’t bother with me much (ie; didn’t really pay attention to me) and they all just played together really well. It was fun. Even during the music video meeting, I just naturally told them “Please come and play” and when I said that, they gladly came and did just that.

Would CL have been able to show this much capability if it was not YG Entertainment?

I’ve wanted to join YGE since I was really young so since then I’ve known that it wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t this company.

You don’t wish to write your own songs?

For now, I think it’s more fun that Teddy oppa writes good songs and I try to express those songs. ‘How should I interpret this’ ‘How should I make this different with my voice on stage’ These are still fun to me right now. If the chance presents itself, someday I’d like to try to write songs myself. I think it would be a good learning experience at the very least. That’s why I was always with oppa when this song was made. If there was some things that I was curious about, I would ask lots of questions.

Have you ever thought of writing songs out of your love experiences?

I want to (date). Then, I want to write songs when I feel those emotions. But the circumstances doesn’t seem to allow it. I don’t know if the boss is preventing it thoroughly but I haven’t been able to meet with my destiny yet. (Laughs) When the opportunity comes I’d love to try (dating).

What’s your ideal type?

I like someone who I can comfortably connect with when talking to them. I’m someone who likes childish things like romantic comedies. Rather than a prince charming, it’d be nice if he is fun to be with and is a pleasant and comfortable person. When I ask the people around me ‘who do you think I look good with?’, they’d say, “I don’t think it’s a Korean person”.(Laughs) I believe that a good man will appear one day.

Lee Hyori came out at around the same time with a similar concept. What do you think of the sunbae singer’s stage?

Bad’ means ‘cool’ in writing. Sunbaenim’s song probably wants to convey the same idea too and as a woman, I’m glad that there are lots of representatives of cool females that are coming out. It’ll be great if more come out in the future too.

What did the boss say when he saw CL’s performance?

Rather than giving praises, the boss tend to express himself through his expressions. But he gave (me) a lot of support personally. After the song was released, he told me “Because it’s a no. 1 song to me (no matter what), so don’t worry about anything and just enjoy the stage as much as you love the song.” I received a lot of strength from these words alone.

What’s in the future for CL as a solo artist?

As I said before, I don’t want to limit myself as a female rapper and would like to show a variety of things. I’ll do it slowly. While I really love rock and traditional R&B too, I think my roots will always be hip-hop. It’s the music that I’ve loved since an early age and has always been the music that I’m biased to. No matter what genre I’ll do I think it will always be the base.

2NE1 had a world tour last year. What are your plans with regards to tours as a soloist?

I’ve always dreamed of it. An image of an energetic stage that people can breathe in is drawn in my mind. I want to try stages with ‘freedom’ where the focus is on the relationship between music and me, and large-scale stages where the highlight would be the stage and visual effects.

2NE1′s leader #CL is confidently going up against the big boys with ‘나쁜기집애’- Interview with Citizens Daily (June 4, 2013)

tumblr_mnibxa1Ura1rne5e3o1_500

This spring marked the return of many singers in the music industry. Starting from Psy, Cho Yong Pil, Shinhwa, Lee Hyori etc all released new albums. They then proceeded to sweep the top spots on various music charts. On the other hand, the momentum of idols is not as strong as it was in previous years. We are experiencing a drought in idol hits right now as they are ‘buried’ under the brilliant comebacks of the heavyweight singers.

However, there is one idol singer who is gaining sensational popularity after releasing her new song. It is girl group 2NE1′s leader, CL (Real name Lee Chaerin – 22) first solo single ‘나쁜기집애’. As the leader of renowned group 2NE1, who debuted in 2009, CL certainly upheld their reputation for releasing music that is full of personality.

We met with CL in a cafe in Seogyo-dong in Seoul on the 3rd.

“I’ve always thought about doing a solo but now it has actually been released,” she says with a smile. “Actually I wasn’t focusing on preparing for a solo. About a month before, the boss (YG Entertainment representative Yang Hyun Suk) said ‘Let’s do (your) solo record’ and that’s when we started preparing for the solo record. I’m really satisfied to be able to do activities with a song that represents me well (Laughs).

‘나쁜 기집애’ is a hip-hop song with a slow beat that seems to match CL’s charismatic rap well. It contains an impressive addictive chorus that goes ‘난 나쁜 기집애 (I’m a bad girl)’. The song was created from an idea that came up in a conversation between CL and producer Teddy (Real name Park Hong Jun – 35).

A while back, when I was joking around with Teddy oppa, the words ‘나쁜 기집애’ came up and there was a good feeling about it. And oppa also said ‘Next time when you have your solo activities, it’d be great if you could do activities with a song that contains the phrase ‘나쁜 기집애 (Bad girl)’. So this song was made as we remembered that time.”

CL who radiates intense charisma on stage is actually very different in daily life.

I try very hard to separate my lives as CL and Chaerin. You might think that I like to go to clubs often to play but actually, I don’t like to play (Laughs). I’m someone who thinks that only this work that I do (music) is fun. On days when I’m resting, cooking is my hobby. When I’m alone I want to live not as CL but as Chaerin. And of course on stage, I want to be just CL.”

CL, who has kick-started her solo career with the release of this song, also revealed her aspirations as a solo singer. Although she released just one song this time around, she revealed that she would like to record a full album that contains a variety of colours in the future.

I also like rock and rhythm and blues(R&B) music. Of course the base would still be hip hop, but I hope to be able to show a variety of colours in the future. While I’m still known as “2NE1′s CL” right now it’d be really nice if I could be recognized as just “CL” in the future (Laughs).”

CL, the strong beliefs of this ‘Bad Girl’ – Interview with Osen (June 3, 2013)

tumblr_mnibxa1Ura1rne5e3o3_500

CL is ‘bad’. But that makes her relatable. Globally.

Having joined YG Entertainment at 16 years old, she spent 4 years as a trainee and has lived as a singer for the past 3 years. CL had grown up in YGE through the 7 years she has spent there, which has led her to possess charisma that is unmatched.
Through the release of her first solo song ‘The Baddest Female’ on the 28th of last month, CL transformed into a powerful hip-hopper. This is a concept that has not been shown by any domestic female singer before.

The CL-effect could be seen immediately. Not only did she achieve an all-kill with all of the domestic charts, U.S’ Billboard also commented that she’s an “outstanding female singer with an authentic persona that is reminiscent of Nicki Minaj.” It is partly thanks to CL’s firm beliefs that she was able to achieve these results.

At a media interview on the 3rd (of June), rather than greeting reporters with the intensity that she shows on stage, she ‘knocked reporters out’ with her bright and cute smile instead. With her flowing blonde hair and in a black outfit, CL’s femininity was overflowing.

CL was first asked to comment on the first stage for ‘The Baddest Female’ that was completed just the day before the interview.

Although I wasn’t 100% satisfied with it, it was really fun. I didn’t know that it would be that exciting to be able to show a new stage after so long. I gained strength from the many fans that came and the 2NE1 members who came to support (me).”

CL’s first solo song ‘The Baddest Female’ is the work of YG’s representative producer, Teddy. The somewhat strong title that is ‘나쁜 기집애’ is a result of conversation between the two (CL and Teddy).

A while back, when I was joking with Teddy sunbaenim (i.e. senior), the words ‘나쁜 기집애’ came up. Sunbaenim then suggested that to me as he thought it matched (me/the song) well. I thought it was fun too. I’m really happy to have Teddy sunbaenim write the song. Although I wasn’t directly involved in the work, I was always there with sunbaenim when he was working on it. Overall, I watched the process of the creation of my song. I had a “happy dilemma” as I thought of how I could express this song as best as I can.”

‘The Baddest Female’ is a slow hip-hop song. It is already unusual for Korean female solo singers to do traditional hip-hop but for CL, more than just being popular, it is more important to do the music that one can do best. This girl shares her firm beliefs on this matter.

I wanted to let everyone hear the music that I could express best. While it’s true that more people like pop music than hip-hop, I wanted to be the first to showcase what I like and what I do best. Of course, it would be best if everyone who hears it likes it but most importantly, I’m genuinely happy to be able to let everyone hear it.”

CL would always show the brightest expression and was most serious when talking about the process of making music and her aspirations as a singer. This is a true workaholic that is in love with music.

Truthfully, the various processes of preparing everything this time around didn’t feel like work at all. I had fun doing everything from costumes to the performance, the song and even during meetings. I talked a lot with the staffs too. As this was an opportunity for me to tell them everything that I wanted to do, I guess that is why I had an even more positive attitude as I participated in the process.

While CL emits a strong charisma on stage that is unmatched by any other, her coy sexiness also stands out. The brilliant outfits that she wears coupled with her pretty good looks has attracted the attention of the public.

Did you say (I’m) sexy? Truthfully, I’d like for people to think that I’m cool. I don’t think I’ve ever thought of wanting to be sexy. I just want to be a cool woman. Of course I’d be grateful if you think that I’m pretty. Ah, I dieted a lot though (laughs).

The CL on stage and off stage is somewhat different. The CL that is off stage is always Chaerin at every minute. Unlike the tough CL on stage, Chaerin is a gentle and feminine side to her.

There are a lot of people that think that I ‘play very well’(i.e. parties a lot) due to my image on stage. But actually, I don’t know how to play and am not a fun person to play with. I’m probably just a workaholic. Only music, working and going on stage is fun for me. My only hobby is cooking. I think of cooking another form of art. I often give food to the members and hear that it’s delicious. It’s one way which I use to try and distinguish CL and Chaerin. When I meet my friends and family, I want to show them Chaerin as much as possible.”

2NE1 as well as CL, always emphasizes being ‘women/female’. This is also a significant part of CL’s beliefs. She is keen to break the prejudice that foreigners have against Asian women. Throughout the entire interview, CL’s expression was the most determined when talking about the topic of femininity and she seems to be resolute in her beliefs.

I was always enrolled in an international school, (and realized that) foreigners have a very ‘fixed’ image of Asian girls. While (that image could be) positive, the opposite of that exists. I think the thought that ‘I want to break the mold’ just emerged naturally in my mind as I formed close relationships with foreign friends while growing up. Within the time that has passed, Jeremy Scott and will.i.am also told me that “they didn’t know that there are women who like hip-hop and wearing stylish clothes like me in Asia.” Ever since I heard those words, I’ve always wanted to let everyone know of a different image of Asian women. That there are actually a lot of cool women in Asia.

On the basis of her strong beliefs, CL is moving forward while holding on to a huge dream. Could her goal be to be like G-dragon, a colleague in the same company who has enjoyed success for his solo world tour?

I don’t want to limit myself as a female rapper and I want to show a variety of things. As hip-hop flows in my blood, I’d like to show a variety of music with hip-hop as a base. In due course, later, I have to admit that I’d like to make my own album. I’d be really happy too if I could do a world tour. The day when I’ll be able to think about that will be a really thankful day for me.”

Not going to touch your personal feelings about CL. You'll see what you want to see in these interview answers...
But it's not her fault she's "overshadowing" those other female rappers, it's the media's. And it's not like she's being called the most talented rapper in Korea. She's a fucking idol from one of the most popular kpop groups, she's going to get media attention. It's out of her control who the media decides to pay attention to.

Thank you for giving me a clear answer. Complaining about her getting attention just seemed...
And I wish she would mention more women also besides Lauryn Hill, Madonna, etc. In another interview (don't think it was posted here) she did mention Hyori: "As a woman, I am delighted that so many awesome female singers like her are releasing songs. I hope I get to see more artists like her in the near future." http://clthebaddestfemale.com/2013/06/05/interview-cl-awesome-women-like-lee-hyori-makes-me-thrilled-june-4-2013/

But what if she just lacks the power and control over her career at the moment? One journalist who interviewed her tweeted: "Even though so, the interview today was a little nerve-wrecking at the end. Was trying to expertly ‘dig things out’ of the participants and the publicists were all nervous and fidgety… ㅋ In the past I was slightly uncomfortable with YG but I can’t help but be a fan due to the charms of their artists. I felt the same with CL’s interview today and while I want to write the article with the wordings as is… I think the YG PR team will all come running with the colours drained from their faces (if I do) … ㅋ"

Should she just not talk about it at all or do what she can (like promoting being oneself or being confident)?

Where did she act like a special snowflake, tried to put herself up or made it look like she thinks she's really talented? She called herself a novice singer in an interview and doesn't call herself a good rapper, just a rapper..

I know she has messed up in a couple of interviews in the past but she has had quite a few interviews and has said quite a few things that really don't make her sound like the type of person people on here think she is.

Reading remarks like this make me pretty sad tbh. I feel like she's always expressed a desire to date/have normal relationships and it always comes back to YG. He's stunting her. The dude is an OGRE.
