“Little PSY” Hwang Min Woo Suffers from Racist Hate Speech

On May 2nd, Star Zone Entertainment who represents “Little PSY,” Hwang Min Woo, announced that they had taken action against the individuals who had published racist hate speech on their company’s website. Last week on April 25, the agency filed a police report requesting the investigation and punishment of netizens responsible for leaving hateful and racist remarks online. The very next day, it was reported that the Gangnam police were assigned to the case.

According to the police investigating the case, it all started on April 23 when 10 members registered to an internet community called “Daily Best” decided to flood Star Zone Entertainment’s home page with hateful posts.

Some examples of hateful posts included, “He’s an inferior half-breed” and “To think that people like him live here.” It was reported that 8-year-old Hwang Min Woo was shocked to have received such hateful comments.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Hwang Min Woo has been targeted for being raised in a multi-cultural home with a Korean father and Vietnamese mother. He has long suffered bullying at school, physical violence and verbal abuse from his peers.

Star Zone Entertainment agency gave this statement regarding the matter, “When someone says something so vile against an 8-year-old child just because his father married someone of a different race, how are they in their right mind? We will taking aggressive measures to find out who the people were behind these hateful posts.”

“Little PSY” got his early start as a singer after debuting shortly after his appearance in PSY‘s ever-popular “Gangnam Style” music video. His early debut has also been a subject of controversy since he would have to be exposed to the rather harsh and demanding K-Pop industry at such a young age.

The members are from ilbe, an online community full of extreme conservatives who love to hate and troll on anything and anyone who don't share their views and opinions. Pretty different than the average netizen. They also criticize how his mother exploits his son at such a young age, but the fact that his mother is foreign just makes him an easier target.

I'm going to leave this comment here, because I've been curious but don't really have anyone to ask -

My boyfriend and I were considering going to Korea to teach, and possibly stay long-term. I'm Caucasian and he's Vietnamese, would we have any issues? And if we had kids, would they be treated poorly? I hear about a lot of that kind of thing happening and I don't know if I want to put my kids through that.

I could point out that your question is answered by the article itself, but whatever. Yes. Kids will find any reason to pick on other kids, and in South korea the school bullying seems to be especially bad. There is a good chance that, theoretically if you had a kid, the kid would be bullied. (Unless there was some sort of school for international students)

As far as you guys teaching, you'll probably face a moment here or there, but all the people I hear going to be teachers over there seem to like it. Older Koreans may get irritated with you for foreigner behavior (being unfamiliar with their customs or not knowing the language, etc), but just staying there for a year or two should be fine.

Its still saddens me about korean society's attitudes towards mixed race kids. I have cousins who are Korean-Pakistani and they got so much shit when they went to school in Busan because of their names and religon. They eventually ended up moving back to Pakistan

I'm mixed but I never experienced any real racism when I was in Korea. I didn't go to school in Korea though. But I did live there for two years after college. Most people actually appreciated that I was part Korean instead of just being a full foreigner. Usually they just treated me like I was Korean.
