re: the "white power" t-shirt -- the member wearing it is named Baekhyun. the shirt was (I believe) given to him by an international fansite, who were trying to pun on the 백/白 meaning of his name. Baek power, hence white power. which is a ridiculous pun, made twice as awful by the fact that his hanja is 伯贤 and not 白贤.

look, i don't wanna be all "oppa didn't mean it" because it's not cool but my guess is that he has literally no idea what he's wearing. especially since he himself is not white and would be adversely affected by white supremacy propaganda.

basically, i'm kind of pissed at the fansite for sending it to him, but this is definitely more on the cultural insensitivity/lack of awareness that this has a racially charged meaning to it. i was pretty horrified when i saw him wearing it, but i hope he doesn't get too much shit for it because a) it was a gift and b) he has no fucking clue what it means (much like the people who gave it to him, i imagine). :||||

Baekhyun mentioned that he's okay with fans calling him 白賢 or 伯賢. Most of the Chinese fans I've interacted with on weibo prefer 白賢 because it sounds more poetic, whereas boxian is really... clunky. So, the fansite may have thought that the shirt could be a pun for baek(hyun) power. Nevertheless, I understand that this is a racially and culturally insensitive shirt. I guess this is a case where "oppar really didn't mean it". ((Can he read English btw? Legit question)

Yes, he does know what it means, because the Chinese fansite that gave this shirt to him, have explained it. They explained that it is a play on words on Baekhyun's Chinese name, which translated into English mean "white" and "power".

For you and me and a lot of other people, "White Power" means something completely different, of course. I'm also sure that he gets what "white" and "power" mean, but not the implication of their meaning, especially since there is no such thing as the KKK in South Korean. I'm pretty sure that he doesn't know the racial implication of the words, especially not after the explanation that the fans gave to him: cool play on his Chinese name.

First of all that 'international fansite' is a CHINESE fansite.

Second of all, most people in Asia have no clue what 'white power' implies tbh. I wouldn't even call it racial insensitive just lack of awareness.

Third, he is asian, I doubt he'll be join the forces of KKK anytime soon so hold your horses before going 'what' or calling him stupid/dumbass tbh.

And his chinese name is not a ridiculous pun, fans in China call him Baixan because it sounds pretty and a lot more nice than Boxian, and Baekhyun it's OK with that :\ ....


'WHITE POWER' can mean something to a lot of people in the world and at the same time nothing to the rest, not everyone is in America/Europe or even have knowledge about white supremacy, also let's consider the language barrier and cultural barrier before slamming the boy or his fans :| ...

i accidentally read it as white powDer when i saw it a few days ago and didn't see the big deal out of a crack joke OTL my stupidity knows no bounds. i really don't think he would wear this if he knew what it meant though. idols tend to trust fan gifts quite easily.

which reminds me, a lot of idols have been wearing sketchy things on their clothing and hats lately... they have to at least understand what the curses mean, right? after all those are said to be the first words you learn in a new language.
