SBS Apologizes for Copying
2009-07-22 09:29 pmSeoul Broadcasting System (SBS), one of Korea's major broadcasters, admitted Wednesday that they copied a Japanese clip called "Getting Prepared for Work in Five Minutes" for its popular show "Star King."
The program was aired last Saturday, and a local performer carried out the exact same clip on stage.
While the Japanese version showed a man preparing for work in only five minutes, the program showed a man getting ready in three minutes.
The program drew criticism after its airing by viewers who already knew about the Japanese version, but the producer claimed that the performer devised the overall concept and that they had no idea it was based on a Japanese clip.
However, according to the local Internet news service by CBS, Nocut News, the makers of "Star King" showed the video of the Japanese version to the performers and told them to do exactly the same thing, but only in three minutes. The news portal added that the performers rehearsed at a hotel and even at SBS headquarters with the producers present.
With news out that the program makers explicitly copied the Japanese clip, SBS released a press release, admitting their misconduct.
"We have concluded that the makers of the show have given the Japanese version to the performers and made them rehearse before the actual shooting. We have decided to change the producer. She will be suspended for the time being," the press release said.
"Star King" is one of the channel's most popular programs, hosted by Kang Ho-dong. Every week, the show offers the stage to people with distinctive talents, from singing, dancing and drawing to mimicking. A panel, mostly made up of celebrities, vote for the best contestant.

Date: 2009-07-22 08:16 pm (UTC)Asian variety shows...I beg to differ. Japanese variety shows are based almost purely on slapstick--"Oh look, he fell down lolololol". IMO Korean variety shows have much more to offer and are less of the same thing. Let's just agree to disagree. :D

Date: 2009-07-23 12:52 am (UTC)I think I'll beg to differ. I watch Korean variety shows because I like the celebrities. But I can watch a starless Japanese variety show and enjoy it like there is no tomorrow. Koreans need to exert effort to make people laugh so much while Japanese could find something funny from the littlest of things. Plus, what comedy isn't slapstick? EHB? Jihwaza? X-Man? It's the same thing. They play again and someone gets a mishap in a sadistically funny way and everyone makes GIFs out of it especially when it's their idol.
Plus, I can tell that most Korean variety shows are indeed gotten from the Japanese ones. I've seen tons of stuff done by the Japanese variety shows in the 1990s to be adapted by Korean shows post-millenium. Plus companies like SM and idol factories do admit they took after the idol industry in Japan with improved modification.
What matters is I enjoy both anyway. I just felt like pointing out and defending Japanese variety shows a bit.

Date: 2009-07-23 12:56 am (UTC)And Japan was the first to start the Asian style of variety show; I've taken a couple classes on Japanese pop culture and yes, Taiwan and Korea and later China and the Philippines did take the formula that Japan created for this style of show. Japan has a had a major entertainment industry much longer than Korea, it's no wonder why they are the ones who are being borrowed from. I don't really get why Korean entertainment fans have to be so defensive about Korea being influenced by Japan.

Date: 2009-07-23 05:38 am (UTC)Japanese viewers prefer comedy to angst, even when dealing with death so something totally dark like Maou was a refreshing change.
