KBS TV said Wednesday it has adopted a guideline to ensure the welfare of animals used in television production, following public outrage over revelations that a horse used during filming died due to apparent abuse.

The public network has come under fire after it was learned last month that showrunners of the TV series "The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won" intentionally tripped a running horse and caused the creature to fall violently to the ground for filming purposes.

The horse died about a week later amid accusations of animal abuse. The epic period series centered around Lee Sung-gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, has been suspended since Jan. 22 following the controversy.

Public broadcaster KBS announced a pause to its historical epic drama series “The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won” for two weeks, amid allegations of animal abuse.

The broadcasting schedule for the embroiled drama was replaced with world news program “World Report” and the talk show “Let’s Jeongchi 2,” which were originally scheduled after “The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won” on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

“Due to the ongoing controversy, the two episodes scheduled to air this Saturday and Sunday will be canceled,” a KBS official said Friday. “The special episodes prepared for the upcoming Seollal holiday will not be aired either.”

KBS has issued an apology after an animal abuse controversy arose over a horse being injured on the set of “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.”

“The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won” is a traditional epic sageuk about King Taejong, born Lee Bang Won, who helped his father overthrow the Goryeo Dynasty and establish the Joseon Dynasty. A traditional epic sageuk is a historical drama that typically involves a large budget and cast, a long-running storyline, and depictions of real historical events and figures.

Viewers raised concerns with the Korean Animal Welfare Association (KAWA) over a potential animal abuse issue in a scene that aired in “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.” In the scene, actor Kim Young Chul‘s character, Lee Seong Gye, was thrown from his horse while riding. To create this scene, the horse was pulled to the ground using a rope tied around its legs.

On January 20, KBS issued the following statement:

The government will ban operation of wild animal cafes where people can see and touch the animals, in a bid to better protect the animals, according to the Ministry of Environment, Friday.

The measure follows criticism that animals at wild animal cafes are stressed from exposure to customers as well as poorly managed hygiene standards.

"There are 159 such cafes nationwide where raccoons, meerkats, prairie dogs as well as various amphibians and reptiles are on display," a ministry official said.

A dog named Baekgu has become Korea's first honorary 119 rescue dog after playing a critical role in the search for a missing elderly woman.

According to the South Chungcheong Provincial Government and emergency officials, the dog was given the title Monday for helping rescue workers find its owner, a 93-year-old dementia patient who fell unconscious in a field, 2 kilometers from her home, Aug. 25.

The woman's daughter, surnamed Shim, filed a missing person report to police after being unable to contact her mother for hours. They checked CCTV footage and saw Kim leave the village at dawn. But despite search efforts with volunteers, they could not find her for nearly two days.
