SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic leader, has died. He was 69.

Kim's death was announced Monday by state television from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008 but appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media.

The leader, reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine, was believed to have had diabetes and heart disease.

The news came as North Korea prepared for a hereditary succession. Kim Jong Il inherited power after his father, revered North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, died in 1994.

In September 2010, Kim Jong Il unveiled his third son, the twenty-something Kim Jong Un, as his successor, putting him in high-ranking posts.

K-pop Royalty Gets A New Crown
By Adrienne Day

The meteoric rise of 2NE1 could be a fable, foretold by the epic video for their recent single, “I Am The Best.” Dark gives way to light, as a mysterious hooded creature appears in the distance. As the camera swoops in, flashbulbs pop, synths and beats explode, and BOOM! the ladies of 2NE1 take the stage, twirling in tight black pantsuits and sensual abandon. “I am the best!” they sing, and you can almost hear their millions of fans around the world screaming in concurrence, reveling in the awesome, almost otherworldly presence of this dazzling and fierce foursome. If they aren’t the best, then they are certainly something approaching perfection.

Herein MTV Iggy introduces America to the Best New Band in the World: 2NE1.

LA VIDA BOHEME, ATIF ASLAM, SKRILLEX, AND YUNA RIDE GROUNDSWELL OF GLOBAL ADORATION

Any band releasing a song titled “I Am the Best” rarely gets the chance to prove it. But for K-pop sensation 2NE1, it only took a few short months. CL, Dara, Bom, and Minzy — the four fiercest ladies of K-pop — went head-to-head against nine powerhouse musical acts. But like superheroes from a distant galaxy, like their own “Sudden Attack” video game avatars, they bested all before them. 2NE1′s instantly addictive hard-edged, synthesized, amalgamated pop sound pushes the group light years away from the girlie/sexy/cute female K-pop stereotype, winning the group legions of devoted fans far outside their hometown borders. They promised, “I’ll bring you all the way to the end, follow, follow, me.” And borne upon the shoulders of these Blackjacks, they’re leading the way forward in the 2NE1st century.

For Venezuelan La Vida Bohème, Pakistani Atif Aslam, Malaysian Yuna, and American Skrillex, the ride has been no less thrilling. Each band came equipped with a passionate fanbase but won more hearts along they way, picking up new votes with each passing week. They make us dance, swoon, and cry. They make our faces melt. And they now ride an enormous tide of worldwide support, ready for further honors and acclaim in 2012.

Our straightforward goal, from the outset, was to discover and share mind-blowing new music. To that end, we congratulate and thank all our finalists — you are the best of global pop music. Over the past six weeks, America voted for all of you in massive numbers. It’s been our pleasure to introduce you to new audiences, and now we can say with confidence — America is ready.

“We are called Big Bang from South Korea, nice to meet you all.
And because this award is something that our fans have given us,
it has a lot more meaningful and it gives us more joy.
I would like to thank our fans, V.I.P, once again.
And through this opportunity, I hope we can attract more love
and interest to Korean music and Big Bang as well.”

It has been officially announced that after a lengthy three year hiatus, the talented CSJH The Grace will finally be making their comeback into the K-pop scene this July!

On June 28th, SM Entertainment confirmed, “CSJH will be undergoing a new project for their comeback in the beginning of July. Please look forward to their new image.”

Speculations on the girl group’s comeback were set off after a special episode of KBS 1TV’s “KBS Special – K-pop Makes The World Dance” had unveiled SME’s annual itinerary for their company singers.

According to the schedule, CSJH The Grace will be making their comeback on July 13th with a title song called “VIP“. SM Entertainment explained, “The revealed itinerary was only a temporary one. Another official one has since been created.”

CSJH The Grace made their debut back in 2005 with their first single, titled “Too Good”, but only began to gain recognition with their hit track, “One More Time, OK“. The group went into hiatus three years later following their album release for “Stand Up People” back in 2008.
