You can say the same thing about fashion shows. No one would be caught dead with those ugly clothes on but it is in the name of fashion. Actually, ripped pants DO appear in everyday fashion. Maybe not to this degree but plenty of people wear ripped jeans. So I can't see what's so bad about them aside that they're TOO ripped.
