Wassup party people. Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 2nd week in February, 2016. Most of the songs were posted before, so this week we will check out some live stages. I hope you guys are in a laid back mood today, because this week is filled with slow jams and ballads.
#3 Crush “Don’t Forget”
This is his biggest selling song, and would peak at #2 on the charts. This was the start of a very busy 2016 for him. Besides releasing an EP and non-album singles (like this one), there were tons of collabs with other artists as well. This song features Taeyeon, but he goes solo and gets a little help from the audience for this live concert performance at MBC.
#2 Ryeowook “The Little Prince”
This was his official solo debut. I don’t know much about Super Junior, but I remember being surprised that his solo took so long because I always thought he is one of their stronger singers. This album came 11 years after his debut, and was the first album released through SM and Super Junior’s label, Label SJ. This release would also give him his first solo concerts the following month. The song and the album share the same title, and was inspired by the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry novel. Here’s his solo debut stage at M Countdown.
#1 Gfriend “Rough”
This was the lead single from the group’s “Snowflake” EP, and it was their first song to reach the top spot on the charts. This was a huge hit, it would give the girls a total of 15 music show wins, including triple crowns on 4 different shows. They would also win a bunch of year end awards as well. It was the most downloaded song in South Korea in 2016. Here’s a ballad version of the song from KCON Summer 2020. It would be their last KCON together, the group would formally disband the following Spring.
Honorable Mentions
#4 Suzy & Baekhyun “Dream”
On New Year’s Eve 2015, this collaboration between the EXO and Miss A singers (Miss A was technically still together) was announced. It would debut at the top spot a week later. It would stay a #1 for a few weeks, and win some music show trophies despite not appearing on them. Here’s their performance at MAMA at the end of the year, where the duo would win “Best Collaboration”. It was also the first time they performed the song together.
#6 Teen Top “Warning Sign”
I don’t remember this song at all. This was the group’s only release in 2016. It was the lead single from their EP, “Red Point”. I do not like this music video. Lots of quick cuts and flashing lights. They all look nice though, I like all the styling with suits. This was the last release that would feature L.Joe, who would leave the group in early 2017.
