I think there is a lot of great material but the directing and editing of this drama are a mess. Too many characters were introduced in the first episode without distinguishing one from the other besides titles and fake intrigue. Even in episode three I’m still trying to piece who is who and the relationships among the cast. Also, the constant filling in of back stories after every other scene isn’t helping. Why use this tired tactic when the subject matter is complex and intriguing enough to stand on its own? Interestingly, a character remarks that it’s rarely about the trail of receipts: it’s the story behind the receipts. The production team would do well to take this advice rather than amping up the fake intrigue and tension.
The acting has been decent although I’m not buying Im Siwan in the role. Perhaps ii’s because I’m used to seeing him in melodramatic roles rather than the cocky, talented lead who delivers endless quips. Still deciding if that’s more on him, me, or the production team.
All that aside, I’m invested enough to see how this plays out. It seems the next story arc will take place across five episodes. Maybe that will allow time to better introduce the characters and help the production team to settle on how to tell the story in a less chaotic manner.
