KBS Apologizes After Horse Dies From Injury On Set Of “The King Of Tears, Lee Bang Won”

KBS has issued an apology after an animal abuse controversy arose over a horse being injured on the set of “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.”

“The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won” is a traditional epic sageuk about King Taejong, born Lee Bang Won, who helped his father overthrow the Goryeo Dynasty and establish the Joseon Dynasty. A traditional epic sageuk is a historical drama that typically involves a large budget and cast, a long-running storyline, and depictions of real historical events and figures.

Viewers raised concerns with the Korean Animal Welfare Association (KAWA) over a potential animal abuse issue in a scene that aired in “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.” In the scene, actor Kim Young Chul‘s character, Lee Seong Gye, was thrown from his horse while riding. To create this scene, the horse was pulled to the ground using a rope tied around its legs.

On January 20, KBS issued the following statement:

"We apologize.

Regarding the accident that occurred during filming for ‘The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won,’ we take grave responsibility and apologize.

The accident occurred during the November 2 filming of Lee Seong Gye’s fall from his horse that aired in episode 7.

It is very difficult to film a fall from a horse. The horse’s safety is fundamental, and we also have to consider the safety of the actor on the horse and the safety of the crew members filming the scene. Because of this, the production staff spent several days preparing for the scene in order to prevent any accidents from potentially occurring.

Despite this preparation, during the actual filming, an accident occurred in which the actor was thrown hard from the horse and the horse’s upper body struck the ground with great force. After the accident, the horse got up under its own power, and we checked to see that it had no external injuries before returning it. However, as viewers recently began to express concern for the horse’s current condition, we checked the horse’s condition again, and we regret to say that the horse died about a week after the filming occurred.

We cannot help but take serious responsibility for this unfortunate incident hat has occurred. We apologize to the viewers for not preventing this accident and causing such an unfortunate event.

Through this accident, KBS recognizes that there is a problem with the way that scenes of falling from a horse are filmed. In order to prevent such an incident from occurring again, we will find another way to film and portray these scenes. We will also cooperate with the advice of experts on how filming of various kinds can be safely conducted with animals on set.

We sincerely apologize once again to the viewers and those who love animals."

i was pretty shocked this morning as the articles kept popping up regarding this drama and overall treatment of horses on kdrama sets. i had no idea about contracts having clauses that basically say 'it's ok if horse dies!' and that a lot of them actually die because they are forced to do dangerous stunts over and over again.
how can any of this be worth it? i don't think there is a single kdrama viewer that goes 'oh yes this was the best drama because that horse stunt was so realistic'. you can easily remove all of such scenes. it's like insistence on using real guns on set to make it look real. nobody needs that.
this shit is absolutely vile.

"the horse was pulled to the ground using a rope tied around its legs" have these people ever MET a horse?? It's probably a stretch to think they were using animal welfare supervisors but it's pretty common knowledge that horses break like porcelain and will not be able to recover from even mild injuries.

jfc boycott and cancel the whole frigging drama. A ten or fifteen second shot falling from the horse is not worth the injury and then subsequent death of the horse. let’s tie the legs of the director or whoever was calling the shots and then pull their legs out from under them to see how they cope with it. ugh I hate humans

I always feel stressed whenever I see battlefield scenes where the horses fall down. I’m disgusted to know they really are hurting and killing horses.

we checked to see that it had no external injuries before returning it

weren't there any experts for such kind of stunts on set?? but they also just could've filmed this without bringing the horse and the actor in danger...

[identity profile] takemydream.livejournal.com 2022-01-21 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
WTF?!

That's incredibly dangerous for both the horse and the actor. They never should have done that.

Damn, invest in some machine horse and CGI or something. Anything but this.

And lollll they're like oh yeah we just found out the horse died months ago lol oops!

What the fuck.

That poor horse.

I saw the gif and its a miracle the stunt double didn't die either, he had no head gear and passed out after hitting the ground neck first. The poor horse didn't deserve this

i mean there's an option where they didn't have to do this scene. now a horse is dead. jfc

This was so incredibly heinous. I cannot believe the people responsible didn't think anything of painfully killing an animal just to save a bit of money on CGI. I hope this director never works again, my god how on earth did he think he could get away with this in this day and age

And as always some netizens need to get their shit together and stop being terrible to people who had no control over this

any animals in movies/tv really stress me out especially horses because i just don't trust people and this is 1000% why

i literally don't care if an animal looks so fake that it's cringe, USE CGI/any method that protects the animals!!!! that poor horse, i hope this show flops and the director never works again
