"She was interacting with fans in her Instagram comments and when all of the foreign fans kept asking her 'English please~' she replied back in Korean 'Learn Korean :P'"

"She's the jjang ㅋㅋㅋㅋ and looks gorgeous in that picture..."

"I'm so tired of foreign fans always asking for 'eng plz'"

"I really wish foreign fans would stop it with the eng plz ㅜㅜ if you're going to be a fan of a Korean idol, at least try to learn the language ㅠㅜㅜ"

"Yeah... I don't really see foreign fans who don't bother to learn Korean as having that much love for the idols they claim to like."

"This is why I love Sica ㅎㅎㅎㅎ"

"Seriously... it always frustrated me seeing them ask for English all the time"

"I feel it ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I was watching INFINITE's V app and people kept spamming that they were Turkish Inspirits... no one asked"
- "I saw that too, no wonder Dongwoo mentioned Turkey over 2-3 times"

"I know an unni who is a fan of a model and she learned that model's language ㅋㅋㅋㅋ she's mastered 7 languages so far like that"

"Or use a translating machine... every time I go into the video comments of Korean singers, I always see 'eng plz' comments"

"I agree ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ learn the language already!"

"Foreign fans, let's learn Korean ^^"

"But on the flip side, I find it so cute when I see foreign fans writing in Korean no matter how awkward it is ㅋㅋㅋㅋ"

"When she speaks in English and Korean fans complain about not understanding, she tells them to learn English too ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ"

"Yeah, I don't think you can get as dedicated as Korean fans are with their celebrities. Korean fans will go as far as to learn the languages like Japanese or Chinese... but I noticed foreign fans demand that Korean celebrities speak English for them ㅋㅋ"

"Sica actually uses a lot of English too but they always still ask her for English.. ^^"

"Seriously, it's so frustrating when fans just demand English from Korean stars.. if you like a Korean star, you should be speaking their language or at least trying to learn it ㅋㅋㅋ some just straight up demand that they speak in English"

"Oppa English plz"

"Pretty sure it'd be easier for foreign fans to just learn the language so that they can go to concerts and communicate with their favorite idols better."

"I even see foreigners report her posts and some comments for not using English, pisses me off"

Omona, has your love of K-pop inspired you to study Korean at all? Do you think foreign fans should learn the basics, at the very least?

Alternatively, do you ever get frustrated by the langauge barrier between you & your faves (assuming they only speak Korean)?

the endless "english plz!!!" comments can get annoying as hell but they're also kinda dumb because if your bias is even a little famous literally EVERYTHING they say/write gets translated and it's not hard to find subs/translations online... it only requires the bare minimum of patience which apparently these people don't have lol

Good for her. Fans are way too entitled.

She was talking to a korean fan when the i-fan butted in demanding "eng plz". That's like me eavesdropping on other people's conversations and demanding they switch to a language I understand. It's entitled as hell.

I've only subbed things a few times but the amount of time it takes is insane. Fandom should be thankful they have so many people willing to perform this service for them at no cost

No, haven't studied any Korean.
Part of me wants to because I really like languages (was even planning on becoming a translator when I was younger), but I feel like I need to work on the languages I've studied before and refresh those skills before even thinking about trying to learn a new one.

Also her comment does not in any way come of as rude to me. People were being annoying and demanding and she called them out in mild joking way.

I was wondering if this was going to get posted here. I was over in another forum and people got so defensive when this was posted. Like she's obviously talking to people that are demanding her to speak in English. If you don't want to learn Korean fine, but don't be entitled because something's not catered to your language. You chose to like something not in your native language. You knew they'd be more than likely speaking their native language. Either learn it or suck it up and wait for someone to translate or sub it.

And there are so many decent free resources to learn Korean you don't even have to spend money to learn in the beginning if you don't want to. There are actually two sets of 100% free textbooks available for the beginner level with audio for learners to use.

To answer your questions.
1. I started learning Korean just for the fun of it. I had already wanted to before I got into kpop, I just never had anything to look forward to in the language. I've been learning since April and it's not really as hard as some people make it seem. I'm already working my way through my intermediate textbook and I don't study everyday at all.

2. Nah, I don't get frustrated I was into Japanese media before kpop so I was already used to things being in another language other than English. I can't wait for subs or struggle translate my way through. Though it's been getting easier for me to read tweets and instagram posts without help these days.

I know basics and can read enough Hangul to get by but I'm by no means great at Korean.

Anyways I don't like people telling others to learn a language as much as I don't like fans demanding for English so I'm in the middle lol. I've noticed a lot of the times English is the language from diff countries fans may have in common with their idols. Like on weibo a lot of cshawols talk to Key in English.

Also I know Jessica enough to know she said it playfully though I don't think she meant anything bad by it.

I don't think knowing even basic korean should be obligatory (knowing hangeul is really useful tho, you can read all these weird rankings by yourself, use the comeback schedule from icharts, stuff like that) - after all not everyone can learn new languages, it's not that easy - but i feel like we all should at least try. Because the best way to learn it is to interact with this language on daily basis and this is something we do literally every day anyway so why not use it for something good? :P It's good for your brain, looks good on resume and is an easy way to impress your family and friends. I feel like being in kpop gives you a huge chance to learn it easily so why waste it?
It really makes kpop much more fun for me, i love the process of learning new language, it always makes me so happy when i can recognize even simplest words. Plus i dont feel guilty about having such an useless hobby, because it's not useless now, i learn an amazing language! :P
Honestly i cant understand people who think there's something weird about learning a language bc of an idol or any celebrity - it requires a lot of time and hard work and imo is a beautiful way to express love :')

lmao i'm literally on korean studies bc of kpop. i don't regret it tbh. 90% of music i listen to is korean still, although i don't really care about the entertainment part of it all anymore (i know comments like ~i'm here for the music~ are generally disliked but i really am :P)

also english plz comments are rude imo

This type of thing actually me feel incredibly annoyed at myself myself for not being able to comprehend another languages. I try but I struggle all the time. She shouldn't have to speak one language over the other to satisfy people.

tbh as a Korean I find it really annoying when international fans spam videos saying things like: "Where are the subs?!", "It's 2016, put eng subs", and "eng subs plz!"
I understand that Korean entertainment has an international audience now but don't like go around expecting English subtitles for every variety show, drama, and music video. Translating takes work man... And when some fans complain to subbers for taking long. Don't even get me started on that...
Like why do some fans feel so entitled?

---
Also I have a friend who's like a borderline Koreaboo even though she say's she not. (insert sure-jan.gif lol) and she said the weirdest thing to me once when we were out at lunch. She said she's thinking of taking Korean classes at uni because she's so in love with KPOP and wants to work in the music industry now. And she said that the fact that she's dreaming in Korean now is a sign that she should take classes... Um.... What....
I don't know... I just got weirded out by it.

i hear a lot of korean fans complain about how ifans report their comments in korean on their faves' ig and get them deleted and i always wondered if there was any truth to it, like there are so many people who's said this and there are enough fans i've seen on ig who are always asking for english from the celebs but like... why would you even report other people's comments??? just because you can't understand them???

"eng plz" comments bother me so much. If you're consuming Korean media that's made primarily for a Korean audience and expecting them to speak other languages then there's something wrong with your logic.

I learned hangeul a while ago (which i'd recommend since it's so easy and helpful) and I can pick up/say a few basic phrases but not much beyond that. There are a ton of free apps, videos, lessons etc. to learn Korean if somebody wanted to. Honestly part of the reason I haven't learned more Korean is because at the level I'm at now I can still be blissfully unaware of how stupid some of the lyrics are lol

lmao i love thiss

when i first got into kpop, yea i learned how to read hangul just so it would be easier to navigate sites and learn idols and what not since i remember soompi forum posts would have korean titles and im like 'who is this!!' and then i kinda learned the grammar and vocab but i never really picked up on it too much and it's been so long. i really should throw myself back into it one day

if your hobby is in a foreign language it's great to learn it to get the best experience, whether it's idols, gaming, football, whatever. And you can tell your mom your hobby isn't a complete waste of time. It's definitely a personal preference though, not a signup requirement!

Personally I stay away from my fave's IG because ifans spamming their country, writing embarrassing or sexual comments, besides demanding for English. It's too much. My fave comment is "no one asked" lol

As much as I love Donghae, I never remember how his name is written in Hangul.
My sister says that Hangul is easy, but I never really take time to learn it. I'm just lazy I guess.

I follow some translators in Twitter, so I could understand things.. If I don't find any translation, I'll just be gushing over the cuteness :D
The language barrier is there, but I don't think it is a problem. If you really want to understand it, you would find a way. Internet is resourceful after all.

late, but i hate "eng plz" and "eng sub plz" comments so much. it reminds me of when people say "you're in america, speak english" except it's worse because they're korean celebrities creating for a korean audience. it doesn't just reek of entitlement, it reeks of us/anglo-centrism.
