On September 13, news outlet World Today reported, “According to a source in the business industry, actress Kim Min Hee decided to break up with Hong Sang Soo due to her film comeback.”

The report said that a film industry source close to the couple revealed that Director Hong Sang Soo is currently preparing to film a movie in the United States. Even up to two months ago he called Kim Min Hee occasionally. However, Kim Min Hee decided to break up with him thinking of it as the best choice for her future.

Furthermore, the source said, “Their relationship is not like what people think it is. They shared a friendship as film people and did not have a secret wedding and are not adulterers. They became close after Director Hong left his home and Kim Min Hee took care of him; they’re not lovers.”

Kim Min Hee has recently been revealed to have gotten a casting offer for a French film.

Previously, the actress and director were reported as being lovers in an affair last June.

Update:

A new exclusive report from SBS funE claims that actress Kim Min Hee and Hong Sang Soo did not actually break up like recent reports have stated.

According to the news outlet, a source close to the couple spoke with them on September 14 and stated, “They are continuing to meet in secret places.”

The source revealed that the pair plan on spending the Chuseok holiday together and said, “After the news about them dating came out they cut off contact with their families. It doesn’t look like they will be returning to their individual lives.”

The actress and director first met through filming a movie together. Last June, they were reported to be having an affair.

"They're not lovers"? Didn't her own mother admit the affair in text messages? Anyways, The Handmaiden hits the US next month. Anyone seen it yet? Is it good?

I've seen The Handmaiden and I thought it was pretty good. She was beautiful in it and I think she's a talented actress. Her personal life seems to often overshadow her career.

The source says they "broke up" but also that they were 'just' friends?

I love Park Chan-Wook's films so I'm glad to hear this falls in line with his usual quality. I've got The Handmaiden ready-to-watch, but whenever I have the time I'm never in the mood because I feel as though it will be a rather heavy watch.

I hope we get it near where I live, it leaked like a month ago but someone who saw it at a festival said that you miss out a lot on some of the humor through the fan subs so I'm holding out

shame tbh i really love her she's got most things going on for her idk why she has to do this.

also handmaiden is good but not as amazing as people make it out to be imo. also i really adore kim taeri. she may be lacking in some scenes in the movie but she's p good i'm so excited to see her growth in the movie industry.

Handmaiden is good but I think what's good about it is the cinematography, nothing is particularly great about the acting imo. The other movie I've watched with similar aesthetic is Love, Lies and the acting in that was absolutely superb so yeah I felt a little disappointed.

What a mess. Apart from the moral implications, this is why you don't get involved with people who are already attached to some else.

if it's the same copy I've seen around, it has serviceable subs most of the time but there are some bits that are ridiculous lol.. if it won't be opening in your country and/or you can wait, wait for the DVD release with proper subs, it'll be a much better experience! the official subs were so ~poetic..

I hope you get to see it in the theatre! the fansubs aren't terrible - the exposition scenes are okay but some scenes are ruined by the crudeness of the language in the subs imo..

did you watch/like the BBC miniseries? I watched it after watching The Handmaiden thrice and reading Fingersmith, so my expectations were waaaaayyyy high.....and I ended up disliking the miniseries :/ should've watched it before everything else lol

Oh damn, really? I'm the type that likes to have the truest experience, so I guess I'll wait for a better-subbed version. It's likely to be online before it comes to where I am. I don't know what the UK did to deserve the 17th February '17 lmao.

Preferably I'd like to see it in cinema, but I have no hopes that it'll come to one near me haha.

17 February?!?! THAT'S ATROCIOUS D: I thought the October US release was bad enough. it opened in July for me and by then most of the best fan content by kfans was already out and hard to find..

Thank you!! lmao, I nearly choked when I read that date tbh, we're the very last country to get it. We're 2/3 months after the penultimate date too. I envy you for that release date lol.

It's showing at the London Film Festival but I won't be able to go to that, so it'll just be suffering for now :(

Echoing the statements of some of the comments here.

Handmaiden was good but not THAT good. That said I felt like I can compare this film to a Makoto Shinkai film? Amazing cinematography A++++++ visuals but the plot falls a little flat for me. So many questions unanswered and the plot didn't really come into full circle as much as I wanted it to.
